This was probably one of the best videos ever teaching how to do the gliss for Rhapsody in Blue. Great job at explaining and demonstrating this technique.
I once sat and watched painfully as a first chair clarinet in a professional orchestra spent an hour after rehearsal trying to master the Rhapsody in Blue gliss for the upcoming concert. He never got it. They had to bring in another player for the solo. So, good for you to have these skills at your age. Hope you are still playing and doing well.
great video!!! very helpful! i'm a high school clarinetist without a private teacher so i rely on a lot of youtube videos to learn techniques like this. would love to see more like this from you!
Wow you're in high school with THAT clarinet? That's high quality there. I played a solo in this piece Blue Shades (Ticheli) and kinda thought about it as "kissing" the note. Keep up what you're doing bc I didn't do this until college.
Oh ok lol but you still have a great tone. Are you considering teaching younger clarinetists? At that level, I found out how much fun it could actually be to play a broader repertoire.
I've been watching clarinet vids recently and your instructional one pushed me to dust my clarinet off and get back to the woodshed. Thank you for the inspiration. Are you uploading Rhapsody in Blue on here as well?
I am a high school student but I am learning gloss. This helped alot I think I have the same clarinet as her buffet festival? Learning gershwin and so troubling :(
You explain it so well. Thank you! I often to try to learn from other people. But yours seems the easiest. I like your technique of doing the glissando on Rhapsody in Blue. I've always been doing it the other way.
This is fascinating. My husband and I just started wondering about this today listening to the radio. I used to play clarinet but never was very accomplished. My main instruments are voice and piano.
thank you so much!!! I recently got an assignment where we have to do a few scales bending up and down the pitch of each note as we go and I couldn't figure it out, your video actually helped and now I can (sort of) do it!
I play violin too and most of all love the piano . Many pianists used to believe they could change character of a sounded pitch by doing something to the keys . I'm not sure spiritually I believe much is possible and body movement and facial expression can subjectively influencewhat an audience perceives and experiences. Lang Lang and GlennGould are beautiful communicative examples of this . Violin vibrato is much easier than this . I compose all day so I really want to learn clarinet had a woodwind class in college 20 years ago - didn't pay attention !
Thank you Laura your video was a great help; we clarinetists are so lucky to have this piece. I am so sorry that you receive so many inappropriate comments, yours Nick.
That's the first clear explanation I saw about doing a gliss :D I have the problem that my tone is not going low enough, is it because I'm doing something wrong with my tongue? It is just a quarter tone I can go lower.
Ik this video is 5 yr old, but im now a junior in highschool and my band director just ordered rhapsody in blue (I think with the help of some requests, one being me) even though Idk how to do it yet. Anyways, not a lot of videos I watch (doesn't matter the genre) clearly explain the point, so thank you so very much!!!
Perhaps you can help me; I tried lowering the pitch on the c for some time now, I can't seem to go lower than perhaps a semitone, even though I lower my tongue as much as possible an try different stuff with the embouchure... maybe I don't relax my throat enough, I don't know... how long did it take you to get this right?
I find it hard to lower my note a decent bit. I just can’t manage to get my mouth open enough. I don’t know why. I can lower my notes, but it is just harder to lower it to reach the next lower note. I mean this as if the clarinet had no sharps or flats. I wonder if anyone here has tips. I really want to learn Rhapsody in Blue. Lol. I originally heard it in the 1996 dci show “Another American Revolution” performed by the Glassmen. I found out the name of the song accidentally when I was watching a RUclips video where someone was making a video on a closed hole clarinet. (Forgot if that is how you say it or not, but I think the technical term is “plateau.”) The funny thing is that the song has been recommended to me by RUclips, but I never listened to it. So I was oblivious as to the name of the song until a few days ago. Have a great day everyone!!
Dr. minJ Not being a smartass. It’s just a common misconception that it is a gliss. I was told this by someone who took many clarinet “theory” classes. Thought the information should be passed on so more are aware
if you want to learn to gliss there are probably some similar techniques as far as throat/tongue configurations go for sax and clarinet. They're both reed instruments so I'd assume so.
Shame on you, you broke a rule on the clarinet. A clarinetist should never ever ever everrrrrr slide your fingers that's been a rule for years upon year upon years

Delaney Sprecker thats fantastic to hear! Thanks so much! 😊
I've played clarinet for four years and I have never heard about this
animelover 23 glissando's are mostly in higher grade pieces (7 and 8, probably not 6) which typically requires playing for more year than 4.
same, I've been playing clarinet/bass clarinet since 5th grade and now only in ninth grade have I discovered this
lol four years is literally nothing......
You've not played enough
I've played clarinet for 3 years and (5th, 6th and 7th grade) and I learned what they were in 6th grade
that gliss at the end sounded so much like a voice 😭😭 this is so helpful thanks ur so tallented

mrbigg151 Thanks! I'm actually in university, I couldn't gliss in high school haha
Oh ok lol but you still have a great tone. Are you considering teaching younger clarinetists? At that level, I found out how much fun it could actually be to play a broader repertoire.
mrbigg151 Yeah I currently teach quite a few young woodwind players, and I love it!
I've been watching clarinet vids recently and your instructional one pushed me to dust my clarinet off and get back to the woodshed. Thank you for the inspiration. Are you uploading Rhapsody in Blue on here as well?

Why am I watching this I play the violin
lmao same, I play the cello
Because subconsciously you wanna be a clarinet player
Carolyn C. Same😂
Because you wish that you played the clarinet
I play clarinet and im watching violin videos XD
This is fascinating. My husband and I just started wondering about this today listening to the radio. I used to play clarinet but never was very accomplished. My main instruments are voice and piano.
Fianally a GOOD description and demonstration of a gliss. Now I will practice my clarinet. Thank you.
Thank you so much! This is like the 5th video I have watched and I finally got it!
thank you so much!!! I recently got an assignment where we have to do a few scales bending up and down the pitch of each note as we go and I couldn't figure it out, your video actually helped and now I can (sort of) do it!
Freya Guppy awesome!!! So glad I can help, best of luck!
Thanks so much, at last someone who can explain what we must do. My teacher has no idea how to do this.
Oof I'm in 7th and im trying to learn this, it's so hard but I'm gonna do it
Did ya do it?
Ya. Did you do it?
Did ya do it yet
Have you done it?
Did you do it?
turn on captions at 4:22
I'm in 8th grade and I have to play this in 2 months. I've never played a glissando in my life so thank you. Wish me luck

I started learning clarinet at 47, Now 64 I play reasonably well. But you are excellent and still at school? Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you Laura your video was a great help; we clarinetists are so lucky to have this piece.
I am so sorry that you receive so many inappropriate comments, yours Nick.

Just beautiful gliding sound!
I am not a musician but I love that piece and I have always wondered how clarinetists do it.
AAAHH I LOVE THE GLISS IN RHAPSODY IN BLUE!!! I don’t even play clarinet
Wow I just figured out how to play high C
That's nice
Outstanding and very helpful for some friends of mine in future times to come.
Ik this video is 5 yr old, but im now a junior in highschool and my band director just ordered rhapsody in blue (I think with the help of some requests, one being me) even though Idk how to do it yet. Woah, I started clarinet less than a year ago and I had no idea it was possible to do a glissando on the clarinet!
Kek your icon
I have the same metronome since 1st grade!!! That thing is iconic!
Thanks so much for the help! I've been trying to get it right, and I just needed a little guidance :D
Is that vibrato at 5:16 ? .... How do you do that?
Tyler Pfrehm it wasn't a vibrato all she did was stagger her breath to change the pitch
It IS a vibrato. You just change the stiffness in your lower lip. I've done it for a long time.
Kazuto Kitykya that is a vibrato lol
Many thanks Laura, your video has been useful for me! Could you 😌 please make another video explaining how to gliss on the altíssimo register?
what about glissando from high F-sharp to high A (when you have to pass through G, and G-sharp tones to get to the A? )
dmasz91 same concept, just slide off your F# and G fingers
hello my name is Miquéias I am from Brazil I really like your video I also play clarinet I admire you a lot.
Do you know of any tutorials on how to do it using double-lip embouchure?
Hey i really need help. When i open my throat to lower the pitch it lowers by only a bit!!! :(
thanks, you've helped me so much
You are very wonderful !!
Well done Laura. What make and model of clarinet do you use?
Thanks so much! What a treat!
uhh. i’m a percussionist
how do you gliss on percussion ::::
I don't play clarinet, I just thought it was so interesting how a clarinet can gliss.
I am very confused, is this the same as a fall? If not whats the difference and how do I do it.
@user-gy5qh4ff3g thank you
Perhaps you can help me; I tried lowering the pitch on the c for some time now, I can't seem to go lower than perhaps a semitone, even though I lower my tongue as much as possible an try different stuff with the embouchure... maybe I don't relax my throat enough, I don't know... how long did it take you to get this right?
That's exactly the thing I'm struggling with as well!
Por favor qual valor da boquilha vandoren pra clarinete?
I find it hard to lower my note a decent bit. I just can’t manage to get my mouth open enough. I don’t know why. I can lower my notes, but it is just harder to lower it to reach the next lower note.

Hello Friend! help me, I play music reading the score, I can not decorate, play without reading, can you tell me how I can study to decorate a score?
Sou estudante de clarinete no Brasil muito top o glissando na rhapssody Blue
God bless you! Thanks for the video
WOW this helped so much thank you.
Thanks, super helpful. Although the technical term for the run in Rhapsody in Blue is a "smear".
Dr. minJ Not being a smartass. It’s just a common misconception that it is a gliss. I was told this by someone who took many clarinet “theory” classes. Thought the information should be passed on so more are aware
What kind of clarinet do you play?

LRZ Zhi got mine from clarineat, but dont think they have the rainbow one anymore
I can’t do it
I'm a euphonium, what am I doing here
i play the trombone
I squeak everytime i try to slide my fingers ??
HeyBicBoy you need to lower the pitch more and make sure you are using plenty of air
You should never slide your fingers on the clarinet and it's been that rule for many years
la forma en que tocastes un americano en París esta mas ejecutada
i’m a pianist.... why am i even here
Why Ami here? I play piano
She sounds like a clarinet player
عراقي مر من هنا 🇮🇶
Why? I play alto sax. Lol

if you want to learn to gliss there are probably some similar techniques as far as throat/tongue configurations go for sax and clarinet. They're both reed instruments so I'd assume so.

hello, i subbed and liked shoutout plz???!!??
Ummmm excuse me but this is called a smear not a glissando, yes it’s like a glissando but you are more like smearing that note therefore it’s name
Shame on you, you broke a rule on the clarinet. A clarinetist should never ever ever everrrrrr slide your fingers that's been a rule for years upon year upon years
Gerschwin kinda broke the rules tho anyway ?
Crazy moo moo Cult leader welcome to the World of modern classical music
Hmmm, maybe you just don’t know as much about clarinet as you thought?
Did you just make that rule up? What planet do you live on?
