I had a diamond ring I bought for my ex-girlfriend appraised for $5,000. After we broke up she gave it back to me. I tried to sell it, to a Jewelry Store, and was offered $200 for it, despite providing them with the Appraisal Letter. I ended up selling it for $500 to a store that buys gold. They basically bought it because of the value of the gold, and the diamonds were essentially worthless.

Gold is attractive to people because it's shiny, and it does not oxidize, but most importantly, it's a rare element of the Earth.
Aside from jewelry, gold has a multitude of industrial applications. Integrated circuits would not be as small as they are without micron thin gold wires making the connections within the integrated chip. The reason that gold is used to make wire is that it can be drawn incredibly thin to less than 1/3 the diameter of a human hair.
And as far as the electronics recycling industry that is grown out of the massive amounts of electronics that are discarded every year which contains untold amounts of gold use mostly for contact connections where the environment within the electronic device could suffer from oxidation within connections. So again gold is preferred to be used as it is extremely unreactive to oxidation.
It should also be noted that in scientific research with electron scanning microscopes, is that the subject to be magnified is actually gold plated prior to the scanning magnification process. The gold is applied through vapor deposition which deposits a thin film of gold on the subject. The reason gold is used, is that gold will not absorb electrons. If the electrons were absorbed by the subject, the scanning process would produce an incomplete image of the subject as it is rendered on a computer screen.
And as far as Joe Rogan's dislike for gold jewelry, I have to agree with him as I find anybody who wears gold other than a wedding band, uses gold jewelry as a public display of their wealth. Which doesn't annoy me, although I still do believe it's tacky.

DeBeers is from Cecil Rhodes and Rhodesia.
The native folks were enslaved via a system of taxes put in place.
In order to pay these taxes these folks had to go to work in the alluvial diamond mines.
Tin cans tied around they necks, crawling around on hands and knees all 'pink'.
    'Pink'.
    That many diamonds everywhere.
Taxes were like hut tax, poll tax.
    Dog tax.
Hut tax is equivalent to property tax.
If we had as many diamonds on the market as were actually mineable, prices would drop to 1% of the current value.
