This video closed a loop for me. I'm not kidding. For like 20 years the bickering between Siskel and Ebert over the special effects has been stuck in my subconscious. For some reason it stayed with me. It's not like I thought about it all the time, but every time the name Ebert was mentioned the first thing that surfaced was that conversation. Thank you so much. This comment must seem bizarre haha.
At the end, Siskel says "I dont know" in response to Ebert's question "90% of the time?" which proves that Siskel clearly did not watch this movie in full, or, if he did, was napping during all the Eddie Murphy wisecracks that were plenty throughout the film, and were consistently timed to keep a steady flow of entertainment from start to finish. Several unexpected scenes, which often threw in strange twists, kept the movie fresh throughout which helped prevent predictability, such as the dream scene in it's full entirety with so many weird twists, the walk to the dagger, the Demon setting up carpet in a room to talk to the warlord, the lady kicking ass in the fight scenes, the boy playing tricks on the enemies, the rat turning into the enemy, the old man who surprisingly turns out to be the father, the 300 year old dragon lady eventually (and unexpectedly) unmasked. The fun ride, along with the Eddie Murphy lines and gestures, make this movie entertaining and enjoyable, just like Ebert says. Siskel is certainly delusional to say Eddie was funnier in America than he was in Tibet. Siskel has me stunned with that remark! Many of Eddie's best moments and lines were in Tibet! His confrontation with the old man, his confrontation at the airport, his walk to the dagger with the many funny lines and gestures (his gestures while listening for the quarter to hear it drop, but hearing nothing, and then screaming out in fright "there's no ground in here!"), his way of talking in the temple while spinning the pillar, telling the old man he can keep the $100 because there's no saying what nastiness might be on it (based on the previous booger scene), and more! Also, this isn't silly childish slapstick as we see with many other movies like Police Academy, Chevy Chases's National Lampoon movies, etc. The Golden Child rarely showed slapstick humor and relied more on unexpected twists, timing, and great one-liners for comedy, thereby helping the viewer to feel more strongly about the plot, the enemies, and the importance of the Golden Child. This movie won me over because it had the qualities of "Ghostbusters", whereby you could appreciate the fun personality of Bill Murray, yet still believe in the plot where the ghosts are trying to takeover, just like you could appreciate the fun personality of Eddie Murphy in Golden Child, while still following the plot to see if he can rescue The Golden Child. The Golden Child also reminds me of "The Last Starfighter," another fun movie ride, with comedy and similar qualities.
Siskel: "....wants to use the dagger to turn the Golden Child into an evil creature." Proof positive that Siskel did not watch this movie. Or got all interested in his Milk Duds box when Frank Welker as the devil with the Dr. Claw voice said, "Use the Dagger to KILL THE CHILD!!"

One of the weirdest movies I've seen, in that the movie was built to be garbage, from top to bottom, from start to finish. But Murphy's performance was so good that it elevated the movie, if not to a classic, to at least a great showcase of his comedic talents.

This movie was unpleasantly stupid and obnoxious. So feeding a child blood to corrupt him is a family picture. Talking about using a dagger on him is family material. And Murphy yucks his way through it. The entire cast and plot is a straight man for Murphy, and it was painful to sit through.

The bad guy was dull? Charles Dance is dull? Geeeeet ouuuuuuta heeeeere! I love this movie.
I enjoyed the movie but Gene is right, the villain was dull.
