It's an instrument with ethnic roots, but that does not mean you cannot make high quality versions of it. It's like saying that violins are overkill because the Byzantine lyra was a much cruder instrument. You can definitely go the route you describe to make a kalimba, but it's not what I was going for.
I was watching this with my cat laying in me and Guy: There is more than one way to skin a cat My cat: *looks at me with a look that says* Bitch you fucking better not

Evi1M4chine You probably liked your own comment, cause no-one else would. I'd say you are a gamer, cause that's the only reason you'd overreact so much. Just know, whatever reason you have for being one, your a @$#&.
I suppose you could MacGyver a crude kalimba using half of a hollowed-out, fully dry coconut shell, a sheet of thick pressboard from broken "build it yourself" furniture, some bobby pins, and leftover pieces of picture-hanging hardware, along with a few basic hand tools. Use a drill and coping saw to cut an attractive sounding hole in the pressboard, then cut it to fit the coconut half. Sand each so they fit flush, then epoxy the edges and clamp them together. Straighten out the bobby pins and put them between two differently-sized serrated picture hangers, then screw them into the pressboard tight enough so they don't slip. Loosen the top clip enough to tune the pins to your liking, then retighten. Coat with lacquer or stain. Voila, a coconut kalimba. Go out and plunk out some "authentic Zambian love songs" (even if you're as white as corn flakes), with a Kangol hat to collect your busking money.
haha, saying that "we can move on to protect our kalimba, so it doesn't just last for one awesome jam session on the beach with all the babes" with that same monotonous tutoring way of speech as if it was part of the assembling process made me laugh so hard :D
dilandogbp how'd you know if he hasn't got those machines? even if he doesn't (like me) he can still try and find ways to make one... anyway pointless argument sorry lol :)
Bend the sides out of solid ash, white oak or hickory with a scarf joint and it'd be a lot simpler. I've also bent birch, pine and cedar, but ash is the best for bending.
+Gim Uni I own nothing of what you see there. Just because you use something doesn't imply that you own it. If you're interested in building a workshop you don't do it just to make a kalimba and then leave it unused anyhow.
+K.H. Fab Lab is a kind of location present in some cities that have laser cutters and this wood rotating thing. I don't know if any of them are equipped to cut metal though.
+Tia Leung (The Cinna-PUN) the polyurethane I'm using is already fairly matte, but you can definitely find even more matte versions. Go to a paint shop and inquire.
Wow! I really thought that was going to be hard! I'm sure everyone has access to all of this equipment....even if they live in a tiny apartment with three other roommates.
If you don't, and that's your attitude, of course you're not going to get access to it. There is a whole world outside your shared apartment, there are businesses specifializing especially in providing machines, and a space, like these for hobbyists. Look up Techshop, Makerspace, FabLab, etc etc. If you can't find any nearby, there may be schools and businesses which you could befriend and get access to. If you don't have the willpower you can of course complain in a RUclips comment, it's much easier after all, but far less productive.
@malnatik9@Gmail.com wow, that was a really long rant, which honestly I didn't read beyond the first couple of lines, only to complain that you're not able to do anything. You see, that's the difference between creative people and complainers, those with creativitiy find ways to achieve what they want to do, other people just complain and devalue themselves doing it.
Switch & Lever Keld Sørensen I see one of these in my Grandsons future, and have always believed kids like cardboard boxes more than fancy toys sometimes...but think I'll use wood it's more durable Thanks for the great video and fun project!
+Luminor yep, I can totally understand the $5 in material being too expensive for some. (The machines aren't mine, don't confuse usage with ownership.)
Yeah, but most of us don't know someone who'd let us borrow their studio, and the skills needed to assemble a kalimba are going to require resources. ^^'
Anything is going to require resources. If you don't have the means to aquire them, then find a way. If you don't have the willpower to try, then don't complain. Spreading negativity is not good for your own happiness, nor other's. We can at least strive to make the world a bit better place.
Switch & Lever Well, as a I said before, we don't know how to get the resources. When he made the joke, he didn't even have a baseline. (I assumed all of those machines were yours as well.) For that reason, it's hard to start because it seems expensive. Maybe you can make a video explaining how you got started so we can try it ourselves? :)
Don't be such a jerk dude, he just made a joke plus not everyone has acces to such machines. You can't deny that all the machines that you used are very professional stuff. Just a few people have acces to such machines so chill out.
For many of those commenting on the use of tools and machinery, there are many maker spaces across the country (some located in local libraries now). Be sure to search online for a space near you. While a few spaces may be free for public use, many offer a paid subscription use. If you reach out to some of the owners of these spaces, you may be surprised that they are willing to work with your budget or offer compensation through volunteer time. Otherwise, ask you high school/college wood shops if they offer their spaces for student use. Last resort could be simply asking amongst your friends (perhaps on Facebook) if they know anyone with a machine/woodworking shop. In my small hometown, I know of a few older residents who have shops with similar equipment (sans the laser cutter) that I would likely be able to gain access to for such a small project. While this video shows a very polished version of this project, a kalimba of a different form factor could likely be built with other scraped materials. If your goal is to make an instrument, don't let tools be your limit because you might be surprised what you can do with household items. Albeit, your kalimba may look very different that the one in the video, it could be fun to make a kalimba out of an existing box.
tines are hardened or tempere for some special parametres _ or hardened and tempered for regular spring (blueish temper color/ about 500 degres celcius)???
+Elias Hernandez nope, you assume that people are incapable of two things a) get access to tools (usage doesn't need to mean ownership) and b) people are incapable of figuring out how to substitute for instance a band saw with a hand saw, etc etc. Don't be held back by ignorance, your own or other's.
+DatGurl TalksPidgin those who tries and learn from their failures, those who rise up and say, against insurmountable odds "I can and I will!" Those are who. Where there is a will there is a way, the question is simply if your will and desire to learn and achieve your goals are strong enough, or if you're just happy with quick fixes.
That's just another excuse. If you want something badly enough you'd find a way to make the money. The issue is that most people want it right now, and they don't want to make a long term plan and save up/work extra time/sell stuff, etc, to eventually reach their goal. For all the excuses being broke is one of the worst. If a homeless person can rise up and become the CEO of a multi million dollar company, you can get enough money to buy a few woodworking machines.
Yep, but since r on the top and bottom parts was entirely arbitrary I would've needed to measure those after the fact, and even a small measuring error of r would've had great impact on the calculated length of the slat. Also, since it helped to have more material when steam bending, as the ends got a bit messed up, it would have been more problematic to measure the length of the slats post-bend. I think doing it the way that I did was probably the easiest, all things considered.
Your editing and voiceover work is excellent, and you have convinced me to build a kalimba. I have all of the tools, but the garage is a mess so I'm just going to use a cardboard box and some paperclips.
+Mira Kim of course you can, but it somewhat misses the point. If all you want is a kalimba, but one, for sure. If you actually take pleasure in making things, then make your own.
Okay. As I've said to many people before, if you choose to see the problems of course you're not going to be able to make it. There are many ways of being able to make this, with or without machinery. Even if you don't own the machinery, you could find places that do and use theirs. All you need to do is to think beyond the obvious.
Excellent. But many people seem confused by your using your well equipped workshop to create a really nice soundbox. I'm sure it would work well with a simple square box made of ply, requiring no more gear than a handsaw, drill and sandpaper? A hacksaw, file & drill would do all the metalwork needed. The grounding bar could be made up from 3 strips of square section with the centre one thinner. Does all this seem reasonable? I have one other question though. regarding the grounding bar. You said that you chose walnut but not why. Does a hardwood transmit the vibrations to the soundbox better than a softwood might?
Kimdino1 Indeed, you don't need the fancy tools. You could even make a kalimba from a pre-existing box, like a cigar box. Walnut looks pretty, that's all. I honestly had very little ideas about the acoustics of it, beyond that it needed a hole.
It takes 20 seconds to write this dumb comment. but, it requires a bit of dedication and extra hard work to build this craft. get out off RUclips and get a life!
Lol I love how professional you sound and then "Anyhow, we can move on protecting our Kalimba so it doesn't just last one awesome jam session on the beach with all the babes."
This must be the most dificultly way to build a Kalimba... you can get a much better sounding Kalmba in a much easier way, without using all this big machnes.
Big machines... like... a mill or lathe? Tools that make precise work easy. How I fail to see how it would sound better using other methods that are more prone to error and more work intensive.
+Gabriele Ronchetti weeks? No, days. And don't judge how it's it sounds based on the crappy microphone from a compact camera. Tell me though, do you deliberately go out of your way to be vicious, or do you just not have anything better to do?
I think that if you keep the back ends of the tone lips shorter, there wil be much less dissonant interference with the tone (side) you play. worth a try to cut them shorter (so the 'back end tone" is way higher and thus different from the played tone, and less prone to interfere). fun project, cheers.
A professional guitar maker also builds guitars by himself, they're still not considered DIY. They are considered professional guitars or custom guitars. He built a professional quality instrument with professional tools, just because he documented it in a Video does not make it a classic DIY. If Gibson made a video of some employee handmaking a 3000$ Gibson guitar, would you also consider it a DIY just because you could theoretically build it yourself ? Also i'd like to add that i'm not hating on him, he does a very good job.
Maybe to reiterate, I don't claim this to be a DIY in the sense you outline, I don't know where the belief that this is supposed to be a DIY like that came from.
Switch & Lever Oh you're right. I didn't even notice that "DIY" is never mentioned in the video or in the title. I guess I was just to blown away by how professional everything looked so I immediately thought " How am I supposed to do this?". Nevertheless, keep building crazy stuff!
sh*t man i don't got the tools for this. in the beginning of the video i was like: :D yeah i want to make a Kalimba. And at the end is was like: D: i don't have these kind of heavy tools.
You do not need any heavy tools. You need a saw, a file, a drill and some sand paper, as far as tools go. if you start out with a preexisting box (like a cigar box), you could get away with even less. Don't let lack of tools stop you, think of way around them. I didn't let not having a coconut stop me from making a kalimba after all.
i watched a 12 minute tutorial for something im probably never gonna get to.......worth it
Bennn same
Bennn same!!
I was just watching a tutorial on Javascript, and I ended up making a Kalimba.
Oh my gosh that's so me xD
Bennn sameeee
This type of videos make me feel productive even though I didn't do anything but watch it xD
Same thing here lol
I have a screwdriver.
We should ask advice to mc gyver
OriginalPai i have a jar of sand
That's a good start buddy! Now, if I can just find a tree to cut down... hmmm...
yoga pangestu only you L
honestly tho
I was just watching a tutorial on Javascript, and I ended up making a Kalimba. This place is cursed.
Helium Punk Was watching nano physics and ended up here lol
Me I'm just taking some time before to open my company...when I'll finish to send documents around, then there will be some php for me too :D
Someone get this man an award.. oh wait.
We don't all have full workshops !!!!
This is less of a DIY sort of thing but more of a "How it's Made" type behind the scene on how to make instruments. Pretty neat to watch
I like how he's so professional until he goes. "It's a pain in the ass."
Just came to the comments to say the same thing lol
Make your own. Step 1: grow a tree.
Step 0: Find a proper seed :)
Step 2: Rob a bank to buy heavy equipment.
Step 3: spend 1,337 hours to precision cut.
AsianGamer step 4: take another ten years to perfect it
step seven: spend the next 15 years practicing in jail coz of the bank you robed to make it
looking forward to that awesome jam sesh on the beach with all the babes
Chimi Choi lmao xd
Chimi Choi I looked through the comments for this exact comment!
well done!
Holy shit an instrumentalist DIY'er that gives history for once. Holy fuck I love you.
I'm not just here to builducate, I'm here to educate! I love amassing useless knowledge so much I can't help but to share!
At 8:00 the box is smiling with a nice moustache
Haha, I had not seen that until you pointed it out! That's hilarious!
Until he put a screw in his eye.
That's actually adorable
thats one hell of a disc sander
I expected DIY... where do I get all those fancy machines again?
It is DIY, I was unaware that the amount of machines changed that fact. Read the multitude of other comments I've replied to about this about how you could make it with only hand tools, or where to go to get access to machinery like this.
Switch & Lever ok, Ironicaly, the only thing I have from this video is the OPTIONAL laser cutter lol

This is diy woodworking tools arent fancy machines
I'm so fucking inclined right now
knowing that the mouse might one day play the kalimba, it fills you with INCLINATION
inclined to pray the gay away
I'm inclined!
I decline that you're inclined
I just had a stroke
I was watching this with my cat laying in me and
Guy: There is more than one way to skin a cat
My cat: *looks at me with a look that says* Bitch you fucking better not
omg 😂😂
8:05, look at the back of his left hand.
I cringed
I don't get it. What is it?
Agnė Rinkevičiūtė the vein
Oh
Oh, the vein? So you didn't mean the weirdly bent finger??
I bet that's how they ve been making it for a thousand years.
Just joking btw. great video. you actually inspired me to try to make one without machineries
Now I actually wanna know Xb
The better version. Science to the max
Ahh who am I kidding you don't need to learn tunes. Everything sounds good on a kalimba! *Goes ham on Kalimba*
+1 sub
It's 2 in the morning what am I doing
Bitches have been literally grinding their butts on my doorknob ever since I built a kalimba. Thanks bro!
+0prahTV that sounds very unsanitary.
Wait, that wasn't chocolate?
Yeah i have a laser and all the other industrial equipment to make this thing...
Janloy Quintero
The mill can be substituted with a vice and and a drill.
Or a clamp and a drill to drill the ground bar. Or just use a rounded file to get the grooves.
A hack saw and a drill can be used for the Brass bar.
A saw some files a chisel and sand paper can be used for making the body round.
The tree can be cut using a jewelry saw or with chisels.
Alternatively you can just drill holes instead of doing the tree.
Files can be used to round the tines.
Have a good day.

Right! Essentially a sharp rock can be used to chisel the wood as well. I am well aware there are other tools less precise that can be substituted. My point is, the finished product would be nothing similar to what you built using what you used.

My laser cutter got screwed, I'm writing this while buying a new one at Costco lol
"Essentially a sharp rock can be used to chisel the wood as well." hahahah omg u make my day
Could you guys name a woodshop thst lets you borrow one because i know and have found none.
Thanks! Great video! I would fit the sound hole on the other side tho, if you ever want to mic it up.
Originally, I was only watching by curiosity, thinking of watching some minutes of this video.
Damn, this video is strangely really satisfiying to watch !
Let me just grab my handy dandy laser cutter.
+NoBeatsNoProblem Awesome! Or you know, use a scroll saw, or just drill out a hole. Whatever works for you!
My thoughts exactly.
I don't have these tools, but my memory will work if I wait till I'm older.
Don't forget your lathe and milling machine! 😅
Gamers should have no trouble learning to play this instrument!

But does it Djent?
It can
I djont know if it djoes
probably
This instrument sounds like a lot of fun to play with.
I have no idea how I ended up here. But I somehow feel glad I'm educated about kalimbas and kalimba making :L
Outstanding construction and great sound.
Now I have another use for those spring steel "tines" I collect in the gutters from our street sweepers.
"But was a pain in the ass to get situated" haha love it!
I died when he said "ah, who am i kidding? You dont have to learn any tunes. Anything sounds good on a kalimba."
It's a sweet workshop =)
Inspire To Make Indeed, I wish it was my own!
I'm making a Kalimba for a Instrument Making class in college. I'm already excited to get started thanks to this video :3
Aw man now I really, really wish I had a lathe and sanding belt and etc so I could make one! D: It looks like a fun project!
Awesome vid by the way! :D
1.- your work it's amazing 2.- your workshop it's awesome
....I have none of this equipment but we've made them for centuries without any machinery! If there's a will there's a way!

I am not an expert but I think he was sarcastic....
Why would he be being sarcastic? lol It was a good video and he wants to build one, why is that so hard to believe?
+draw4yourlife3 maybe because of machines he use. Maybe because this video is not how to make but how its made in factory?

+Tia Leung (The Cinna-PUN) the polyurethane I'm using is already fairly matte, but you can definitely find even more matte versions. Go to a paint shop and inquire.

the leaf springs from windshield wipers make nice tines too
The music was way too loud and distracting so I couldn't hear half of the instructions.

You could also use C=2πr to get the length of the bendy slats on the side. Just consider the thickness of the slats when finding r.
I'm supposed to be studied yet somehow I ended up here
+k lincoln this can also be seen as studying, but maybe more life skills than book skills.
Switch & Lever this ain't gonna help me get my degree though
+k lincoln on some level it may, I'm a huge proponent of taking breaks. It help immensely with retaining information. Your brain needs the break :)
An Ace Bandage would work very well to form the steamed side. It's porous so the wood will dry.
11:27 Everything except that.
Well everyone's a critic! You...............................................The joke.
Your editing and voiceover work is excellent, and you have convinced me to build a kalimba. I have all of the tools, but the garage is a mess so I'm just going to use a cardboard box and some paperclips.
Don't get me wrong, this is great. Or you could just buy one :)
+Mira Kim of course you can, but it somewhat misses the point. If all you want is a kalimba, but one, for sure. If you actually take pleasure in making things, then make your own.
It sounds like the tines on the back are resonating sympathetically, making it sound out of tune. Might want to cut those short to keep them quiet?
I have my home not factory
Okay. As I've said to many people before, if you choose to see the problems of course you're not going to be able to make it. There are many ways of being able to make this, with or without machinery. Even if you don't own the machinery, you could find places that do and use theirs. All you need to do is to think beyond the obvious.
THINK? Beyond the Obvious?!?!? What kind of blasphemy is this!? This is the internet, Noone here thinks! How dare you even mention that here
@9:57 are you gonna show us how you put those words on it?
ruclips.net/video/PMOGlNTZCS0/видео.html
this little thumb piano project set me back about 45 hundred dollars.
That last part was embarassing... for any musicians out there
+LoveToRUclips so glad I'm not a musician then!
LoveToRUclips nah, was fun XD
Excellent work and video, Thank You for inspiration
I'm thinking if I spent all that money on the shop tools this guy has to make a box that plays a few notes I'll pass, fuck it ,just buy the box
You don't buy the tools to make a kalimba, you build a workshop to be able to build a whole world of stuff.
Haha! It could be a professional jam session!
Like, I think found materials that have their own unique resonance. Like a coconut shell..
VoltzLiveYT easier to afford/find/fit in your house
armorgamsees
I never questioned that. "I fail to see how it would sound better..."
Thank you for showing how to make (or cut and place) the tines!! The history part was fun and interesting too!
weeks of work. and at the end it sounds like crap
+Gabriele Ronchetti weeks? No, days. And don't judge how it's it sounds based on the crappy microphone from a compact camera. Tell me though, do you deliberately go out of your way to be vicious, or do you just not have anything better to do?
triggered
5 days for the varnish alone. and isn't the point of the comment section /like to dislike bar to hear both positive and negative feedback?
Well, he definitely has a point. From a musical standpoint it sounds quite awful. Bad mic or not, it sounds empty and non-resonant.
+Eluvyel you would say the same for anything if it's recorded with a shitty in camera microphone. Sorry if I don't have studio equipment available.
I think that if you keep the back ends of the tone lips shorter, there wil be much less dissonant interference with the tone (side) you play. worth a try to cut them shorter (so the 'back end tone" is way higher and thus different from the played tone, and less prone to interfere). fun project, cheers.
Flip de boer Indeed, as I mention in the video, they should really be trimmed off.
Thats cool but definitely not a DIY. It's basically a professional made instrument you could sell for good money
How is it not DIY? He made a nice version of it using expensive tools, but he also explained that you can make a simpler version without those tools.
kuaraba the definition of diy is do it yourself. Did he not make this by himself?
Can I replace the laser, wood, metal strips, and holder thingy with safety scissors, cardboard, bent bottle caps, and duct tape?
Why did I watch this?
I was just watching a tutorial on Javascript, and I ended up making a Kalimba.
King Crimson’s album Lark’s Tongues in Aspic has some great Kalimba vibes.
sh*t man i don't got the tools for this. in the beginning of the video i was like: :D yeah i want to make a Kalimba.
Can you make standard drums (snare, toms, frame drums) like that?! 😮 🤔
