  • Robotomy is such a unique case study into a time when Cartoon Network was trying to blend their younger in age programing with their Adult Swim, older audience programing. This resulting in several shows at the time not lasting super long or getting enough eyes from either demographics. But one show over all the rest stood out for how fast the network dropped it, that being Robotomy. So today, let's take a look in what Robotomy was and why its downfall happened so quickly.

The show gave me some "Whatever Happened to Robot Jones" vibes.
Ultimately, this show would have worked better on Adult Swim, with just a little retooling.
      What a shame.

By the way, Superjail and Ballmastrz 9009 creator Christy Karacas was one of the main creative forces of this show. Heck, people actually mistake this show being created by him. World Leaders Entertainment then went into bankrrupcy after this show flopped, which explains why the last couple of Venture Bros. seasons were animated by Titmouse instead.

The way I see it, this show is another indication that Cartoon Network made a mistake cancelling Toonami at that time. I know they've since brought it back on Adult Swim, but the thing is, the original Toonami was very "teen"-oriented. There was also the You Are Here block, which also catered teens and action, but it only lasted two years. I'm certain that shows like Symbiotic Titan and Robotomy would have lasted much longer had either of these teen-oriented blocks stuck around.

Yes I agree! Cartoon Network has always had an identity crisis about whether it wants to be kid friendly or appealing to teenagers. If they had just made a block for shows that were a bit more mature but not enough to be on adult swim, we could've salvaged so many great shows!

The art style and animation are just oozing with Adult Swim. Particularly, this show looks almost exactly like Superjail.
Superjail characters are more colorful, but the outlining, sped up quick movement animation, gradual facial "bounce" to major character exclamations, faded backgrounds, yellowish and orange color palette, violence, jagged lines, extreme detail, single layer faint shading, squarish poses, plain circles for eyes, "sloppy" line edges, similarly thin line edges, occasional backgrounds/wide shots filled with moving characters, backgrounds being mostly composed of one of two colors while also being flooded with numerous lines, and little dots of detail are all on point.

Is there no hope for cartoons like this to ever rise up from the grave? I feel like Robotomy is a perfect example of a show that's in a grey area with an unclear target audience, I really think the concept and setting is very unique, and it's a bit disappointing to see potential just dwindle down due to poor timing and such.

I was in the show's demographic aim when it aired, being a teen, and I was completely turned off by it. At that point in time, cartoons were ... for kids. Sure, there were some that were aimed at adults, on Adult Swim, but you had to go all out to achieve that. This wasn't a show that managed to do ... really enough of anything in any of the directions it wanted to go, hamstrung by its 11-minute run time. Every episode I remember watching was basically a generic school plot with wacky robot twist, and then slapstick humor in the form of robots being destroyed. If they brought it back with some refinement, I could see it doing well, I'm not saying there's no potential at all, but to say it was JUST bad timing is really understating what happens when you try and make a show too many different things at once. It felt watered down and less appealing than just most of the shows that were out at the time.

Honestly, the flaws of assembly line-based education systems and how poorly most bureaucratic structures treat children (and people in general) are definitely themes that need to be explored more often. A show like this definitely has a lot of potential, although it would definitely have to be targeted towards young adults, since most children aren't equipped to understand things like why they're forced to sustain an education system that isn't even designed to educate children in the first place (I personally had the misfortune of gradually discovering the flaws of the education system the hard way as a child)

Ok but seriously, we need more modern era cartoons made SPECIFICALLY for teenagers. I feel like this demographic is really negletted nowadays, like if in society you're either a complete toddler who can't hear a single dirty joke or a grown-ass adult that can only watch extremely explicit cartoons. I never heard of Robotomy before but from what you said in this video it seems, indeed, a pretty interesting and promising tv series for teens, and I personally think it sucks that they cancelled it just because it wasn't appealing to the youngest.

Where they'd be just safe enough not to get my work torn up and confiscated by teachers *and* sent to the principal's office, but still have edgier subtexts that my peers could enjoy.

    I actually remember this show;
I remember that there was one episode where the Robot School took the robot equivalent of the special ed class ("Defectives" I think they called them) and were planning to cut costs by driving the space-bus into a star/ sun (if it was the star of their homeworld, it counts as its sun, right? I dunno), which our protagonists had somehow gotten onto, and yes, I know how horrible that sounds, but as Jordan mentioned, these robots basically operated under a low empathy, ultraviolent mindset where having humane or empathetic traits got you scrapped; for the Robot School Faculty, it was a simple financial decision, to anyone else, an atrocity.
In another episode, Thrasher and Blastus were trying out for the "Murderball" team, with Thrasher repeatedly dreaming about winning his sweetheart's love (and dragging her off to his mountain citadel, an oddly specific detail that repeatedly popped up in the episode), but because they're high-school dweebs with no athletic prowess, they instead get shady drugs from a creepy bot (I think it was supposed to be the janitor?), which cause them to become huge and more menacing versions of themselves, speaking in an unintelligible caveman-esque grunting. They are eventually placed under pressure by the school and their peers to keep winning the games for them, while the former is more suspicious of them, thinking they somehow cheated. The duo have to win the game, but they're also trying to stop once they begin to realize the "After-Effects" of the drug from repeated use (namely, that it makes you ugly and creepy, as the janitor-bot explains that he used to use it all the time when he was younger, treating the viewer to an unpleasant close-up of his time-worn, disfigured visage, and further informs us that he became the janitor when no one else would hire him; this understandably freaks out both Thrasher and Blastus, whom swear off the stuff).
It's been so long, yet I can still remember it quite well, if with some difficulty because, well, it was twelve years ago. I was still in Middle School at the time. I honestly kinda liked it because I was (and currently am) a major sci-fi aficionado.

I love this show. Especially since invader Zim didn't really have any new episodes at the time. This show's grotesque and violent jokes definitely scratched the itch I was missing from invader Zim. It wasn't perfect but I definitely liked it for what it was. Overall, I think this show was released at the wrong place and time. If it was released today I believe cartoon Network would give it a chance to shine.

But it's crazy to see it be canceled so quickly, the show had some potential, at least it would have more if it aired on Adult Swim. Ok but seriously I was barely in high school when this was airing, use to actually enjoy watching this show due to that connection SJ! connection and just the stupid pointless violence.
Like right off the bat I loved the designs and animation too. It was just all too fun.
Granted it FELT like it wasn’t suppose to be on CN due to the level of robot violence lol
It reminds me how in some shooters or just violent games in general throughout the decades would sometimes have a “kids mode” where the gore and blood could be switched on or off.
This is what it felt like to me at least, as If you switched off the gore from SJ! and would instead swap it out with robots.
Weird explanation yeah but you get what I’m saying.
I honestly wondered how long this show would go on if it didn’t end the way it did.
