  • Márcio Carvalho was caught potentially not following the rules on purpose on camera at the extremely hyped up Magic the Gathering Mythic Championship tournament. This isn't 100% for sure cheating but based on his past disqualifications for blatantly cheating, people are jumping to conclusions quite a bit easier.

    FYI, Cry of the Carnarium does not create any triggered abilities, delayed or otherwise. "If a creature would die this turn, exile it instead." creates a replacement effect that lasts for the rest of the turn, and replaces a creature dying with that creature being exiled instead. Tip: triggered abilities always include "when", "whenever", or "at".

      @@mreshadow I mean, if he wasn't aware that even creatures that died before Cry resolves get exiled then he would have sacrificed it anyway. Saying that because he was planning to rez the Bodyguard means he was cheating doesn't make sense. Yeah, if he was cheating he would make that play. But if he wasn't cheating then he also would have made that play. Him planning to dodge Cry of the Carnarium's exile effect to give himself a target for Ajani doesn't really inform us whether or not he knew that wasn't how the card worked.

      @Kellen Smith It's in the Magic the Gathering Tournament Rules document, updated in April of 2018 with the release of the first buy-a-box promo card from Dominaria. It reads, "Section 3.4 (Proxy Cards): Foil versions of cards for which Wizards has never printed a non-foil version may now be issued a proxy by a judge if and only if that card would mark the deck."
      So, according to this rules change, you still are required to own the foil copies of Nexus of Fate in order to use it in tournament play, but the judge can require you to replace the foil copies with a proxy they provide if they so choose.

      sweet i knew of the sort of rule but could not find the actual line in the long document. i just know i was seeing a few posts on twitter of people having proxies of nexus also, and i was pretty sure it stemmed from someone needing a replacement for a card but it was only in foil at the event, the stupid land that is a creature or something like that.

      @cindershadow "if you are playing at this level there is no room to make this error" > same goes to his opponent. I´d say that it´s more important to actually know the cards you DO have in your deck, than the cards your opponent is running in his deck. Plus, there are judges there. All of them let this pass through. I think it would be VERY dumb for Marcio to attempt this on purpose, since with all the buzz, the feeds, reddit and youtubes, he knew this would be seen later on and may cost him his 50k/year he is not getting as a pro player. I dont want to take sides here, just stating that intention is not an easy thing to state in this particular move.

  • @SimonReason
    @SimonReason 5 лет назад +4

    Hey man, I just saw your video on the way to watching some arena stuff. You should show that video to a professional card magician.
    It's not just that 'mistake' he made but things like the way he picks up his card off the deck (via the table), the way he points (using his whole hand), that shuffle / squeezing the cards and the fact that his hand disappears under the table.
    It could be that these are all just innocent habits, which is why you should show it to a professional slight of hand artist to see what they think :-)

    • @memnarch129

      And thing is watch pro tourneys for about the last decade and they ALL do these things. I hate the habits of pro scene players, also how they want to short hand words and phrases and speed play. That leads to more errors and can tilt the odds in one direction or another.

    It is likely he didn't fully grasp how the card functioned and the player who cast 'Cry of the Cranium' should have also enforced the cards rulings so its hard to say he was flat out cheating when the player who cast the card also didn't realize how it should interact with the board.

      Thats the thing, they have been quick playing, ie not step by stepping cards, short handing phrasing, etc, for at least a decade if not two.
      Pro MTG is as much about gaming the situation as it is actually getting lucky and pulling what you need. This is why MTGs pro scene is a joke.

      Old MTG player out for at least 10 years and yes that is exactly how it works. It exiles any and all creatures sent to yard this turn, hence the second sentence. WOTC poorly worded it but it exiles all creatures kiled, destroyed, countered, etc if they hit yard they get exiled.

    I think that regardless of whether or not it was intentional; is inconsequential to the fact that at the end of the day the result is that the actions taking were in direct contravention of the ruling of the the card interaction requirements stipulated by the rules of the game and the subsequent allowed outcome of the play pattern of events that transpired within that game - specifically that point in time on that given turn and the plays made inclusive of therein.
    In law - a judge will stipulate that the outcome an action taken, and the ruling made of it is still governed by the legislation and precedent pertaining to the context of the give situation; regardless of the defendant’s knowledge of these facts. For example: if you punch a guy in the face, even if you did not know that it is illegal to do so for whatever reason - you will still be charged for assault. “I did not know” is not a reasonable defence of your actions.
    Perhaps the governance of the games’ rules should closer reflect this fact? Food for thought.

      Thats not true thou, in law "i did not know" makes a huge difference, its what seperates murder from involuntary manslaughter.

    If a player was Disqualified for playing 4 foil nexus of fate in a deck as the only foil cards after refusing to use proxies, I think that the issue of card quality would be forced into admission by way of the results of an official investigation, and WOTC may be liable for damages because of their sale of a faulty good. The damages could include travel expenses, lodging, meals, entry fee, and there may be grounds for a share of the jack pot.
    BUT if this issue ever gets pushed, I fully expect WOTC to end paper magic and switch fully to Arena/Digital.

    • @mattdeaver6850
      @mattdeaver6850 5 лет назад +1

      Why would a player refuse to use proxies? If you refuse to follow the rules, you're probably going to be banned.

    • @memnarch129
      @memnarch129 5 лет назад

      @@mattdeaver6850 Rules say nothing about this. So saying I have to use unofficial objects rather than official in your official event brings the value of the objects to question. Which if ruled on as illegal would then put WOTC in the position to be sued for selling faulty product.
      Same as GM selling faulty GM branded parts and then saying you have to use third party.

    I feel like he was actually supposed to put the card in his graveyard because all effects refer to creatures. “Exile all CREATURE cards in all graveyards that were put there from the battlefield this turn.” “If a CREATURE would die this turn, exile it instead. This card, however, is not a creature. It’s a sorcery.

    Why doesn't magic just institute a system where at a certain level of play you have to play your games on a computer that forces you to play correctly? Like MTG Arena basically? You just give the tournament your decklist and they upload it. Prevents these shenanigans outright (and also legitimate mistakes- I could definitely see myself legitimately making this mistake, I have a bad tendency to not read the entire card, in ways that often fuck me up more often than help me.)

      Plus i think it's kinda stupid to cheat like this, since you have to assume your opponent knows how his card works.

    MTG needs golf rules. If you make an error on your golf scorecard, however unintentional, you are disqualified. MTG needs to retroactively disqualify anyone that blatantly breaks the rules by their own actions.

    Pretty shitty that almost all Commander Legends foils are literally ineligible to officially play Magic. They should have to replace heavily foiled cards or compensate in some manner. Especially with how expensive collector boosters are and they were affected most heavily since almost the whole pack is foil.
