I saw this at a midnight screening. The zombie action sequences were quite chilling. Milla Jovovich was awesome as a more laid-back Alice. The score was wicked.
I’m glad that we got for what we got from Paul Ws Anderson I don’t hate these movies at all they are guilty pleasure movies to me but that’s just me though
I thought the same but during the pandemic I rewatched both out of boredom and the first one is actually still pretty damn good but I remember liking Apocalypse a bit more when I was younger and rewatching it now , the humor was cringe , it felt more low budget than the first and I hated how Jill got sidelined by Alice . One thing tho that I will forever be grateful for is the end credits is what introduced me to Killswitch Engage . That song blew my mind when I first heard it in theaters
Yeph re Apocalypse introduced me to kill switch it still is ok but that’s where I stop I did like the new reboot and some of the cgi movies were good but after apocalypse that’s where I stop with Anderson’s series
I expected more out of Paul Anderson honestly, way more. Considering he was a fan of the games and it was his idea to make the movie after he played the first 3 over a weekend. He also had did a great adaptation of Mortal Kombat and made other classics like Event Horizon and Soldier.
Agreed with almost everything, but man, Silent Hill having a “better soundtrack” is a bold claim. Watched both movies like a lot of times, at least 5, probably for RE a couple of times more, can’t remember even a single composition from SH movie (I don’t know, were they reusing game OST maybe?), but remember a lot of good stuff from RE, magnificent main theme included indeed.
Fun fact about the music of RE. They were shooting a scene and had decided to play the song for that scene on a set (or it was Manson showing it off to Paul while they were on set. I do apologize it's been a while since I thought of this) and a dog they had on set actually went nuts due to the sounds used. Didn't attack anyone, just did NOT like the sound. I believe Paul did say the dog got mad and snapped but never bit anyone. Once they turned the music off the dog chilled out and laid back down. I believe it's in one of special features on the dvd for Resident Evil. And yes, these movies are my guilty pleasure. I love the games, but the movies were definitely entertaining. The only games the movies do better is RE5 and 6. And the movies barely beat RE5. RE6....that's a low bar and is easy to beat honestly. And another fun fact, Paul eventually decided the movie would be better suited as a prequel to the first game. Explain what exactly went on before S.T.A.R.S arrived at the mansion.
Looking back now, this one honestly captures more of Resident Evil’s charm than Welcome to Raccoon City by miles. The characters aren’t one dimensional like Chris and Claire were, constantly moving forward without ever questioning the circumstances. Alice and Spence had to uncover their selves because of the amnesia and then doubled down on who they actually were. The backtracking is masterfully executed because of the zombie horde and facility’s lockdown, forcing the team to question their paths. Whereas in WTRC, again most of the characters are just moving to set pieces with no real choice or motivation. And Umbrella’s nefarious behavior is captured by their machinations, seeing how they normalized an underground facility into a 9-5 office space, revealing that they lied about blueprints to build testing chambers, and that they had an entire facility nested underneath their mansion. Even without any major Umbrella characters, the company still feels present and in control. While in Welcome to Raccoon City it felt like the company had already fell through instead of having full control over the city or waging war against it to test bioweapons.
Honestly, “Silent Hill” to me is the dominant one. It’s a league unto its own. I’ve never seen such otherworldly and twisted imagery delivered in an atmosphere of true horror. It’s the only film that scares me as an adult in the same way horror movies scared me as a kid.
KoRn was big in the early 00s post Y2K, the Blair Witch Project came out in 99, the following year, the first Scary Movie came out in 2000 and it spoofed the Blair Witch Project along with other popular horror movies at the time
I was so disappointed by Resident Evil when it came out as it strayed so far from the games , once I got over that and saw it for what it is I really enjoyed it , easily the best in the series. I kinda like the Doom movie its definitely a guilty pleasure
I will always associate this with 8 legged freaks and Reign of fire. Me and my best friend watched all 3 together around the same time. I’m a big fan of the games and although I liked the movie… i wasn’t blown away. It does have a great cast. At the time I felt that Purefoy would have made a great Bond.
I enjoyed it. I still think this one is better than all it's sequels. It feels like a video game with the camera angles and unfolding plot as you progress onwards, not to mention that scene where the zombies bodies disappear when they return to a previous area haha nice detail.
hard to believe its been 22 years since this film came out. time flies.... fun fact, the tv edit of the film (when it aired on the SyFy Channel) has the Dog/Cerberus scene completely cut out to save on time since it doesn't actually do anything to advance the plot, and without it most people wouldn't notice it anyways.
I admit, without pause, I am a total Fanboi lol. Have all the games and I LOVE every single RE film, yes, all 6 of them in the Miila Franchise. It's a heavenly marathon.
Everytime I hear about the house of the dead movie, it reminds me when I went and saw it twice in 1 night I knew it was bad or cheesey, the only reason I got to see it twice in 1 day was because the usher never removed the ticket stub,
I saw this in theaters on release day. To this day, I still stand by my opinion. This is a Wes Anderson movie titled Resident Evil. NOT A RESIDENT EVIL MOVIE!!
When you compared this to its sequels afterwards, those became more and more "jumped-the-shark" level of action-oriented and convoluted plot. The first film, despite already action-thriller, is much easier to follow, at least triggered a mystery behind the Hive incident. The horror and scares are much restrained. The bright techno-setting itself hit the park with claustrophobia and feeling of being trapped, never get out. The music by Manson & Beltrami is fitting in terms of the Hive's atmosphere. No matter how outdated its fx (practical and cgi), it has a nice production value if you watch behind-the-scenes, just like first Silent Hill movie. Alice on other hand, here she has more emotion and more empathetic to the horrific situation, which sadly turned more aloof and stoic in sequels (in order to satisfy the director's Mary Sue action 'fantasy').
HUGE Resident Evil fan cause of my uncle , played most of the video games , love the movies , don't get wrong there not very close to the video game source especially after part 2 , I still enjoyed them for just being fun entertaining movies to watch , RE-1 was not that bad but 2 was definitely my favorite
Pretty sure that’s an overstatement. It was a hard feat to achieve, but I’m convinced that at the very least the guy who did “Welcome to Raccoon City” is even worse.
Anderson is a good director but a terrible writer. But he is very good at what he does, Make a mid budget action movie for release in cinema he is pretty much the best in the business at his niche. I have seen most of the RE movies they are serviceable as films, but not faithful enough to the excellent games.
Okay I hate to be that guy but.... Milla Jovovich's name isn't pronounced with the Ja sound, it's actually pronounced as yow·vuh·vich like "Yo". I know because I've watched the DVD commentary where she says it herself. I really wish people would pronounce it correctly if only once in any video.
Despite just being a vehicle for his wife, and deviating from the source material a lot..it was an ok take on the series overall. I am kinda still hoping welcome to raccoon city gets a sequel, lol
There's no denying this movie was well done, but considering the source material it might as well be a different universe in terms of being a clear Resident Evil the game, adaptation.
@@thecunninlynguist that is the question. It's a good plot on its own but aside from some plot points it plays too little to the story of the game. If Jill or Chris weren't so sidelined it might have been a better game adaptation.
It’s a shame really, that after the first movie she’s been granted a role of “female terminator” basically, and her range of emotions shrunk to a single digits. In the first movie Mila was pretty lively

Not a fan of the RE movies. At the time of the first one I was way into the RE games (specifically RE2) so when I heard a movie was being made I was all on board. The more I saw from clips to the trailer the more worried I got, it just didn’t feel right. Well the film came out and I still went and saw it. The best I could describe my initial reaction was “Meh”. It didn’t offend me but also didn’t leave any lasting impression. I felt that no matter how it was I still had Dawn and Day which to me were the perfect zombie films. As time went on more RE movies came out and strayed father from the survival horror theming of the game and more and more into a superhero flick with zombies. I saw the second film which felt was closer to the games but every one after I felt kept getting worse and worse. Still though in the meantime I had the CG flicks which looked exactly the same as the RE Games cut scenes so i wasn’t complaining. Well the Anderson films are done and we have gotten a new movie and show… are they better? Nope.i don’t know why it’s so hard for studios to get the vibe right with these projects. I wish Romero was able to make his RE film. Would it have been good? Who knows but I would have like to see what the man that created modern zombies could do with an adaptation of a game series inspired by his films.

The laser hallway massacre will always be the most remembered.
It's a shame we never got the George Romero Resident Evil movie.
Thank goodness that we didn't.
We'd have to take it seriously, and look into it for deeper meanings.
And these movies aren't that.
His original script took place in the mansion like the first game I believe.
