    Oh, and Birdland was the name of a famous jazz club in NYC, named after one of the biggest jazz musicians in history, Charlie Parker, whose nickname was Bird. The song is a tribute to him and the other jazz legends who performed there. This song was in instrumental by a jazz group called Weather Report, and the Transfer had words written for it.

    I saw the Manhattan Transfer in a really little club up in Albany New York back in the early 80's and was about 25 feet away from them and they blew me and the crowd away!

    The studio version has a far more dynamic sound. They're an extension of vocalese, a jazz derivative. They did versions of big band and bebop classics. You can trace them from Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, maybe Eddie Jefferson and King Pleasure. They also had hits with a 50s gospel cover, Operator, and The Boy From New York City, a 60s r&b classic.
    You should check out their collaboration with Bobby McFerrin, Another Nighr In Tunisia, which features Jon Hendricks on the bridge. It's fantastic and won a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.

      I agree. My dad loved them (he's a music teacher) and so I grew up hearing them. The album/studio version is better and they were also younger. My dad had sung in an acapella group in high school so he really loved harmonies and preferred groups where that was prominent (his absolute favorite group is The Beach Boys).

    Manhattan Transfer was a HUGE jazz group (they just retired). They started about 1971 doing all kinds of jazz, Doo Wop and Blues, with vocal arrangements beyond compare. They were really the model for so many vocal groups later on who will tell you so....Take 6, Boyz 2 Men, etc. In the 80's they had hits with more electronic jazz/pop music, including "Twilight Zone", "Boy From New York City", "Shaker Song" and this song. They are just amazing live so that's why I recommended a live performance. They have multiple Grammys for jazz and pop. First big hit was a gospel song "Operator" which is amazing, and also "Java Jive". Their jazz style is similar to the early live Pointer Sisters music you have watched when they did jazz.

      The model for Manhattan Transfer was the late 1950s to early 1960s jazz vocal group Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, who were pioneers in the art of vocalese, which is a style of jazz singing in which words are added to an instrumental soloist's improvisation.
      The term vocalese was attributed by Jon Hendricks to the jazz critic Leonard Feather who used the term to describe the first Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross album, Sing a Song of Basie.
      Prior to Feather coining the term vocalese, however, jazz singer Eddie Jefferson is credited with inventing this type of jazz song in his 1952 recording of "Moody's Mood for Love," but several swing era vocalists such as Slim Gaillard, Harry Gibson, Cab Calloway, and Leo Watson, had combined vocalese improvisations with scat singing in some phrases of songs before Jefferson's composition and performance of an entire song of vocalese. The Manhattan Transfer honored both Eddie Jefferson and Coleman Hawkins in their vocalese version of "Body and Soul" on their album Extensions in 1979.
      The Manhattan Transfer's Grammy-winning version of Weather Report's "Birdland" featured lyrics by Jon Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross.

    • @lamusiclover2264
      @lamusiclover2264 5 месяцев назад

      @@luminiferous1960 not all of their work was Vocalese. They focused on this type of jazz and the works of John Hendricks on their album "Vocalese". The explored all kinds of other types of music, including Brazilian, Memphis blues,, 50s Doo Wop, Torch songs, disco, pure pop and A Capella. Vocalese was only one genre they conquered.

    Back in the 90s, my first job after college was in a clothing sales showroom where retailers came to order merch for their stores.
    My boss selected the music we played and I was happy The Immaculate Collection was in the rotation.
    But so were lots things I'd never have heard otherwise....including Manhattan Transfer greatest hits.
    Let's just say I heard "Birdland" A LOT 😂
    Still don't know much about them except they're a really interesting group who you can tell looooved making music.

Thanks for recognizing the excellence of their band. If you want to see them really cut loose, check out the video of "Ray's Rockhouse" filmed live in Japan.

    Written by the great Joe Zawinul, whose other great popular hit was "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" when he was with Cannonball Adderley. The club after which it was named, and the man whom it was named after, Charlie Parker, are now gone (the club was a COVID casualty), as is Joe Zawinul and the feature player on the original, Jaco Pastorius, but the rhythm and the spirit remains. RIP to all and long live jazz.
