I have Gunstar Heroes in a 4 in 1 game cartridge. The very first sega megadrive game that I bought was Alien Soldier. At the time I didn’t appreciate it for what he was. At the time my favorite game was Golden Axe 3. Now ... not only Alien Soldier is my favorite game for MG... I consider it to be the best MG game that I ever played. I would like to see a re-release of the game with all the ideas that the development team had to cut for time constraints and hardware limitations. I would sign a petition for it ;).
I have wanted a copy of alien soldier for years now. I feel so stupid for thinking £200 was too expensive when I first wanted it. Now it’s closer to £500 on eBay 😭
@@RetroGamerBoy Maybe it was just people trying to get as much as possible when i last checked. I will always keep an eye out for it though, its top of my list!
Great list of uncommon/rare games. The rarest Mega Drive games in our collection are Dayz Before Christmas, Castlevania, Streets of Rage 3 & Fatal Fury 2.
Worth mentioning one of these games can be found for a lot less, Gunstar Heroes can be found on the 4 in 1 cart called "Classic Collection" and not only that but unlike the original release this combo pack has no region protection on the cart, so if you want to pop it in a Genesis or modded megadrive you can experience the game in 60hz with no issues.
Don't think the prices will go down. I am happy to have bought loads when it was cheaper. Only system I wish I bought more of, is the Mega Drive. I chose to complete my Dreamcast, 32X, Master System and then Saturn sets before that.
Can't believe Lakers VS Celtics is so expensive. Amazing change in price. That case and manual is definitely a holy grail item for you. Insane find. The other games are awesome no idea Wolverine was so spendy
A great breakdown of some truly great and memorable MD games that are at such unbelievable prices! It's amazing to me to know that i have some pretty rare/pricey games in my own collection that i didn't even realise have become so valuable. I was lucky to scoop up a Japanese Version of Gunstar Heroes when i was there on holiday many years ago, though maybe not as expensive on the market when compared to the English/Pal version. I also was lucky enough to pick up Probotector (Contra: Hard Corps in the US) back in the 90s used complete in box and manual. Other titles that i was luckily enough to find at car-boot sales or gaming stores throughout the years growing up were titles like Dynamite Headdy, SplatterHouse 2, Mega Bomberman, Comix Zone, Red Zone, Double Dragon and Boogerman all complete in box with manual and all in surprisingly good condition. Two MD titles that i did have to pay a £100+ for was the Brazilian only mint in box original version of Duke Nuken 3D and the American boxed version of GROWL.
My own collection, within the last 3 years : - Wolverine 66€ - Mutant League Hockey 55€ - Phantasy Star IV 108€ - TMHT 76€ - Gunstar Heroes 89€ - Mega Turrican 208€ - SoR3 97€ Advice: be patient and you'll find pretty good deals.
Now is a terrible time to collect for megadrive. Prices have doubled and trippled on so many titles now it's crazy. I think the main reason Mega drive is so expensive now is because the people who used to play it at the time are now in the 35-40 age range and looking to relive their childhood gaming memories. At 35-40 years old you're likely to be in a stable career with some disposable income to start collecting. Maybe prices will go down a bit once we get a bit older and start collecting something else. But now many games are in the hands of collectors who won't part with them without a good price.
I think game preservation is also a popular past time. I know some guys in their 20s who want to preserve gamings history and have been building games collections to keep them together.
Nice finds Mike! My most valuable game is probably the old black version of Treasure Land Adventure that was only released here in Sweden, I am really happy to own that. One game I think is a real pain to find in good condition is Pirates of Dark Water, I bet you are not looking forward to trying to snag that one?
Thanks Mike for sharing your prized collection! The rarest game I owned is PixelHeart FX-Unit Yuki. I personally like Alien Soldier the most in your collection. For “sensible-collecting” though, I will go for HyperStone Heist, the game starts paying itself off the moment I play it with some old school friends. 😉
Some Great mega drive games here Mike as I paid $140 for Mega Turrican and $100 for Gun Star Heroes here in Australia. One thing I would like to get is the Japan exclusive games like Panoramic Cotton, Yu Yu Hakusho and Pulse Man it’s a dame shame that these games and others never made it out to Europe , US or Australia
Interesting video and I owned all of these titles about 5 years ago... I'm pretty sure you own my actual old copy of Lakers Vs Celtics lol - I remember my manual having a tiny, tiny fold at the top right hand edge? Anyways, collect what you love and as long as your not hurting anyone, what's the problem. I just got to a point with my full PAL set that all I could see was money as I wasn't playing 95% of them and my worry was with the longevity of the cartridges... how long until the carts breakdown due to age and don't work anymore. Sure, you can possibly get bit replaced etc but then is the game original after that etc etc... I had a ton of hyper expensive Neo Geo AES games that I sold for that reason. I now just collect my most favourite games sealed for various consoles to preserve the physical packaging but play games on emulation etc... We are all very different so do what makes you happy... it's lovely to see all the Megadrive games together I won't lie, I do miss my Mega Drive collection from time to time.
A great sentiment there. It does fill me with joy to see the games on the shelf. I like taking them out and playing them before putting them back. Some games though I really get lost in.
OK Mike...you need to explain for those of us on the other side of the pond: What the hell is the difference between a UK set and a PAL set? As someone who is VERY deep into the complete GLOBAL MegaGen exclusive set, I refer to EVERYTHING from the Europe continent as PAL. In building my PAL set, I have noticed some games (like Psycho Pinball) that have a UK and a German release but in the end, they are both PAL and its more of a PAL PACKAGING variant to me so it does not merit its own region. Daze Before Christmas is an Australian Game (though still PAL) but its a regional exclusive to a that continent. The whole PAL exclusives thing seems to be a bit of a dogs breakfast to me as there SEEMS to be little documentation on PAL release variants by country.
Brazil is a PAL territory as well, it had a number of Genesis games and exclusives released for it. There are to EA NHL games that got a local country releases. There are variants of FIFA for some countries, and Australia also had some exclusives. Germany had some games banded so a full German set is different from a full UK set. It's all a bit messy.
I phased out collecting Mega Drive games as I had all the good ones I really wanted. Now, I mostly focus on developing games instead :). Most I've paid for my games were the three big ones for the PAL 32X, which cost around 9-11 000 Swedish kronor each.
@@RetroGamerBoy I’m so glad I never sold any of my 32X games. However, they’re PAL and although my Mega Drive is modded to run at 60Hz, the 32X will only work at 50Hz with borders. And, with modern TVs… it’s just so much easier to play them on a RetroPie 4. My biggest disappointment with the Analog Mega SG was that it doesn’t play 32X games. Obviously, I realise that would have been a ton of extra work, but if they ever release an FPGA equivalent of the MD/32X hybrid Sega almost released, I’d snap it up immediately.
THANK YOU for pointing out that games may be scarce but there's a difference between RARITY! I see so many listings posted over ANYTHING with the word RARE popped in as a form of selling click-bait. When you addressed people selling AT Ebay prices too--that is a pet peeve of mine as well when people do this--Ebay is not the end all to pricing things people--a guide, sure, but c'mon... Wow, didn't expect Wolverine to be on this list--I feel like that's one that would've had so, so many copies out there. PS4 not so surprised though. I hadn't original thought MLH would be until recently when more and more people have talked of how pricey it's become. Glad we've managed to score TMNT and Gunstar--these are games that have consistently seemed to have kept their value over the last decade or so. AND they're great games actually worth playing unlike some pricier games. For instance, SoR3--not terrible, but not the best and to be so expensive... It's crazy to see a game going for sooo much--thousands--when the cart isn't the pricey bit but all the inside goodies and cover art! A wild Sega Head sighting!!!
@@RetroGamerBoy Well just keep in mind for about 500 bucks I can hook you up with the SUPER rare Sonic the Hedgehog 2--most people probably haven't even heard of it, so get it now while you can for this cheap!
I love retro games and have a small collection myself but unless I was rich I would never pay this kind of money for a video game, it simply takes the fun out of the hobby.
I recently got Gunstar Heroes as part of the Classic Collection compilation that also has 3 other games on the cart for £25. I much prefer that price point over £100+ 😀
Panorama Cotton + Teacup is probably my "rarest" game on the MD. There are only believed to be about 300 teacups produced and who knows how many have survived to 2021.
@@RetroGamerBoy I have only seen one version of the teacup for Panorama. However, I think there might be two versions (one like PC but a different image on the cup, and a one which is larger) for Cotton II on Saturn. I have the smaller one for Saturn as well. I've only just started collecting Mega Drive games, the most I've spent on any game is around £65 and I find it hard to justify spending much more than that in most cases. The one game game I really do want for my collection is Probotector but it's selling for ridiculous amounts at the moment and I really don't think it's worth it. One thing I have noticed on Ebay is that while some games are advertised for a lot of money they rarely ever sell, I see the same games for weeks or months on end at these high prices and nobody is buying them.
The Megadrive/SNES market right now is being driven by guys (and girls) in their 40's who perhaps have a bit of disposable income for the first time in ages, having nostalgic feels for when they were age 10 to 14.
Brilliant video Mike! As always I share the ebay frustration. Too many times a game arrives with a faded spine or unseen damage... it feels like being conned! The worst was a game arrived with actual screws through the back of the cartridge (opposed to sega ones) butchered! Also I picked up a perfect copy of phantasy star 4... £105... it arrived in a thin envelope and the box got damaged in the mail!! I just spent over £100 the least you could do is pack it safely! Anyway... there are some good sellers still out there so keep faith! Are these games worth the price? Such a difficult question. I would love to see a production and sales list of all games To be blunt no game should be worth over a few hundred pounds unless it's genuinely rare. But I've spent a shit tonne over the past year and I don't regret it. My most expensive games have been pirates of darkwater, separation anxiety and death and return of superman... none of these games are in collector condition!! I will say it is so hard to find a real bargain these days and that sucks for any collector.
I can't find a decent copy of Pirates of Dark water anywhere. And I share the hatred for "Flat Packing" MD games in the post. They almost always get damaged.
My most expensive purchases for the MD are sor 3, hyperstone heist and castlevania. McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure in mint condition is coming up in price too and is on par with wolverine.
I've picked up 3 copies of Mega Turrican in the past year. One for my collection and 2 for friends and I've only paid a max of £60. Conditions are near mint to mint. You do have to shop around the globe though and have patience
That was a very cool video mate wow, crazy prices!!! I would never pay over £100 for a game, but thats just me. And £4k for a sports game!! No thank you!! pmsl. The games have been goign up in price over the past about 15 years really. It has totally ruined collecting for me and many others. I had a huge collection in the past, but sold them all as can not justify buying them any more, or having games sat on the shelf worth cash and not being paid! I also think once our generation dies out the market will drop very fast. The main reason to collect these games in nostalgia, but teh new generation wont care about them like we do. So, I think they will peak and then drop faster than they rose? ;)
I don't collect for this very reason. I remember trying to collect baseball cards in the states - most of the ones I'd get were worthless, you'd have to invest in plastic to protect it, and should disaster - fire, flood, pests - get to it, they become worthless. I don't want to do that to video games - if I get a game, I want to play it, not put it in something protective. That just ruins the experience for me. That being said, I'm into emulation, and there's a few I'll have to look up to try - and if I like, to see if an online store (GOG, Nintendo E-Shop, etc) has.
I think emulation is the future for playing older games. Physical is a collector's hobby and it will be harder and harder to pickup these games as time goes on. I like to play what I collect, and what I cannot buy I emulate.
Keep on Mike.
Hi Mike, yes the Japanese games are amazing and there are many more rare Japanese games. I need to stop saying final fantasy 😂 the uncut Streets of Rage 3 from Japan is the greatest!
I remember my parents trading mine and my brother's Master System 2 and all our games at Cash Converters in order to get money towards a PlayStation 1. They gave us like £30 for the console and 20 games, tight bastards :D . Regret I never kept a collection of games from those days.
For Where in Time is Carmen Santiago I'm missing the EA watch. Not sure where to find it. Apart from Lakers vs Celtics the most expensive PAL games are: - Fatal Fury II - World Championship Soccer 2 - Demolition Man - Spider-Man: The Animated Series - Ecco Jr - Pirates of Dark Water - Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety Probably some others I can't remember right now.
@@RetroGamerBoy No sorry I don't deserve a thank you. I mean to say I asked for those games on Galaxy Sega for myself but no one could help. 😃 I'll always accept a thank you regardless though Mike. 😂
But Soliel did get a US release. Yet the U.S version, Crusader of Centy, is one of the most expensive games for the Genesis. I'm sure these prices are down to speculators manipulating the market.
@@RetroGamerBoy that is a very good point of course but thankfully I covered my opinions arse by noting it isn't helped rather than being the only reason 😂
My wallet is happy to say i have none of these games, except gunstar heroes, which i got for €25, but it turned out be a repro (but i'm not really sad about that).
As long as they have worth to you, then its worth it. the shining force games are the most expensive in my collection, but I love them both, after all there are far worse things to spend your money on.
Does it matter if the mega drive game is in English or Japanese? I see yours are in English, but that's because they were marketed in the UK, whereas mine were purchased in Japan.
My most expensive Mega Drive game is probably Gauntlet IV... which is a bit pathetic really. Had my MD Mark I since it was brand new, and there are so many games I've intended to add to my shelf over the years. Collecting for handhelds seems to win the fight for my attention.
@@RetroGamerBoy It really is. Doubt we'll be able to say the same about most CD-based consoles that came out around the Xbox 360 era. Build quality is not what is was in the 80s and 90s.
Bargain shops and car boot sales are great places to grab amazing bargains, plus poor old gran and grandad aren't going to know what price the games are so grab it and run.
I've thought about checking out boot sales etc. but these days is it really true that you can pick up bargains like this ? I mean it's so easy to check on Ebay to see how much these games are selling for that I'm thinking a good deal is probably a lot harder to find now.
I think that a lot of people use eBay to price check. Our charity stores do not sell games in store anymore and instead sell them on their eBay stores.
@@RetroGamerBoy My sister used to work in a charity shop and they weren't allowed to accept electrical goods any longer due to health and safety rules, not sure if this extends to cartridges aswell... probably not, but if they were bundled with the console they might get refused.
@@RetroGamerBoy ohh thought you would have, i got lucky and got it from a car boot last year for £2 only got it as it was capcom glad i did its a good wrestling game with friends
No, it's not worth it for complete collections. Who would buy every single game for a system for the skae of it knowing several games are extremely expensive and you're never going to use it.
Paprium IS definely a rare and GREAT Game! And gehts more expensive Every day ! I Paid 250 Bucks for the Investors Edition and it's absolutely worth it!!!
Phantasy Star IV was the worst one for me...just so generic and there was no real plot and a sub weak villain (Zio)IMO. It seemed like a rehash and recycling of PSII graphically and PSIII music wise.
It's crazy. What's even more crazy is the game is the Genesis game but just with UK packaging. So it's just the cover and the manual that fetches that stupid price.
$5000 for a game? Thats insane

The Megadrive/SNES market right now is being driven by guys (and girls) in their 40's who perhaps have a bit of disposable income for the first time in ages, having nostalgic feels for when they were age 10 to 14.
We are the demand for sure, but that is no diffrent for any product. Demand drives sales.
Brilliant video Mike! As always
I share the ebay frustration.
I would love to see a production and sales list of all games
To be blunt no game should be worth over a few hundred pounds unless it's genuinely rare.
It amazing how expensive these games are becoming.
I was gonna say Final Fantasy 4 on the Mega Drive 😉
Yup I known, classic me mistake.
@@RetroGamerBoy lol was really funny 😁
I've picked up 3 copies of Mega Turrican in the past year. One for my collection and 2 for friends and I've only paid a max of £60. Conditions are near mint to mint. You do have to shop around the globe though and have patience
Great deals. I've managed to do that with a few games.
So, I think they will peak and then drop faster than they rose? ;)
I hope so. I buy to play and reminisce. I would like to have money in my pocket for other things as well.
Very nice dude 👌 I am actually lucky e enough to have bought Streets of Rage 3 for 60€ 😁
That's awesome, I have a few games like that where I've come across the price and thought thank god I bought that when it came out.
Hallo Mike,hier ist Mike. ;-)
Keep on Mike.
Hi Mike, yes the Japanese games are amazing and there are many more rare Japanese games. I need to stop saying final fantasy 😂 the uncut Streets of Rage 3 from Japan is the greatest!
I've got Japan Panarama Cotton for the Megadrive brand New 🙏🏽👍🏾I think it's worth around $600 to $800 Australian 👍🏾
Do you have the tea cup?
@@RetroGamerBoy nah mate just the game 👍🏾
Came for the final fantasy comments - was not disappointed. 🤣
I don't think it would be a RGB show without the old man screw up.
Some absolute belters there mate....of which I probably never afford 😂
I bet you got some great ones though.
Phantasy Star 4 is my fav Mega Drive of all time Sega Vida Sega Life
Mine too, I just need to remember the name😂
I remember my parents trading mine and my brother's Master System 2 and all our games at Cash Converters in order to get money towards a PlayStation 1. They gave us like £30 for the console and 20 games, tight bastards :D . Regret I never kept a collection of games from those days.
Oh dear, one of those games is probably now worth the total in cash what your parents got for the bundle. On the bright side you got a PS1.
Nice games. Some of which I own too. Albeit about half my collection is genesis.
I'm looking forward to collecting the Genesis exclusives.
Wait a sec. Your list didn't include any Renovation titles? Did those never get released in the U.K.?
A very few did, but the ones that are more expensive I don't have in the collection. I have most of their Mega CD games though.
For Where in Time is Carmen Santiago I'm missing the EA watch. Not sure where to find it.
Apart from Lakers vs Celtics the most expensive PAL games are:
- Fatal Fury II
- World Championship Soccer 2
- Demolition Man
- Spider-Man: The Animated Series
- Ecco Jr
- Pirates of Dark Water
- Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety
Probably some others I can't remember right now.
Yup, and I still need to get some of the most expensive games 😭
@@RetroGamerBoy I asked on Galaxy Sega. No one could help me. 😢
Thanks for asking dude
@@RetroGamerBoy No sorry I don't deserve a thank you. I mean to say I asked for those games on Galaxy Sega for myself but no one could help. 😃
I'll always accept a thank you regardless though Mike. 😂
just think i had all the games in the 90's for $20 to $40 brand new
A large part of my collection are the games I bought as a kid back in the 80s and 90s
Alien Soldiers price isn't helped by the fact that it didn't get a US cart release (the Sega channel download only!)
Fair enough, as long as you enjoyed it.
As long as they have worth to you, then its worth it. the shining force games are the most expensive in my collection, but I love them both, after all there are far worse things to spend your money on.
Never a truer word was said 👍
Lakers VS Celtics value is +10k. 2018 its sold 8000£.
It's insane, owning this game I can say it's not worth it.😅
i had Alien Soildier and TMNT Hyperstone Heist as Kid😅
Really? Wow
all about that hanging tab !
😂 I have a friend who used to work in Virgin Mega store. Part of his job was to cut the hangtags off😱
Alien soldier would be a good game to play on the stream, and the lakers game 👍✌️
That's a great idea!!!!
My most expensive is a pal copy of the punisher in mint condition even has the sega sticker on the side 👍
SWEET!
Somehow, Alien Soldier passed me by… I’ve got the week off this week…. Hmmmmm.
Play it. You owe it to yourself.
@@RetroGamerBoy Ok, so all these years I’ve been confusing it with Alien Storm; I think that’s what put me off playing it.
Everyone is going on about the Final fantasy gaff, when the focus should be on what the hell Sega Head nicked!
Damn him. He gets away with it every time.
Does it matter if the mega drive game is in English or Japanese? I see yours are in English, but that's because they were marketed in the UK, whereas mine were purchased in Japan.
The games are often rare to a territory. So Celtics Vs Lakers is rare as anything in the UK but in the US it's very common.
My most expensive Mega Drive game is probably Gauntlet IV... which is a bit pathetic really.
Had my MD Mark I since it was brand new, and there are so many games I've intended to add to my shelf over the years. Collecting for handhelds seems to win the fight for my attention.
It's amazing how hardy these console's are. My Mega CD still runs like it did on the first day I bought it.
@@RetroGamerBoy It really is. Doubt we'll be able to say the same about most CD-based consoles that came out around the Xbox 360 era. Build quality is not what is was in the 80s and 90s.
Do you buy my Alien Solider?
Now i have only my seconds Cartrige whitout Box. ;)
Who knows, maybe😁
Bargain shops and car boot sales are great places to grab amazing bargains, plus poor old gran and grandad aren't going to know what price the games are so grab it and run.
I've thought about checking out boot sales etc. but these days is it really true that you can pick up bargains like this ? I mean it's so easy to check on Ebay to see how much these games are selling for that I'm thinking a good deal is probably a lot harder to find now.
I never seem to find games MD games at car boot sales. I think I need to go more often.
I would have thought Saturday night slam masters would have been on here for the megadrive?
It absolutely would, but I don't have it in my collection.
@@RetroGamerBoy ohh thought you would have, i got lucky and got it from a car boot last year for £2 only got it as it was capcom glad i did its a good wrestling game with friends
I love SEGA
Me too.
Ebay doesn't take a 30% cut 🤦🏻♂️I know you corrected it, but seriously in what state of mind did you even think that was correct?
I'm not sure what you are hoping to achieve with this comment. If you don't like m just say it.
@@RetroGamerBoy no. It's just that I can't believe your train of thought in that moment. I like your collection and videos.
Final Fantasy 4? Excuse me?!?
🤣😭 damn it, I can't make a video without making a mistake.
@retrogamerboy Hi again, I sent you a DM on Instagram about a month ago. Just a nudge to have a look at it if you could 👍🏻
Will do.
Sega head's nickin your games
The git!!!
No, it's not worth it for complete collections. Who would buy every single game for a system for the skae of it knowing several games are extremely expensive and you're never going to use it.
I would never buy it, buy having it giffted makes me feel extremely humble.
I guess the most expensive game I own is paprium 😅
Paprium IS definely a rare and GREAT Game!
And gehts more expensive Every day !
I Paid 250 Bucks for the Investors Edition and it's absolutely worth it!!!
I'm still waiting for my copy 😭
I've got the PAL limited edition on order still.
Phantasy Star IV was the worst one for me...just so generic and there was no real plot and a sub weak villain (Zio)IMO. It seemed like a rehash and recycling of PSII graphically and PSIII music wise.
I still love the original, such a great game for its time.
What's your address again? Lol
16 Jive court...... Wait a minute.
Hahahahahaha
👹I see him.
Lakers Celtics is less than $20 complete in USA lmao
It's crazy. What's even more crazy is the game is the Genesis game but just with UK packaging. So it's just the cover and the manual that fetches that stupid price.
