What do do with 2 Year Old Sweet Potatoes

  • Hey there! Welcome back to my 1870s Homestead! Today, I'm getting creative with some leftover sweet potatoes. Instead of tossing them, I'm giving them a new life as beautiful container plants.
Even the firm ones that wouldn't win any beauty contests are perfect for this. I just grabbed some moistened potting mix and filled a pot. Then, I carefully tucked the sweet potatoes in, fat side down, making sure they were nice and cozy. These guys love warmth, so outside they go (as long as the temperature stays above freezing). If it gets too chilly, I'll just cover them up or bring them inside for the night.
For the smaller sweet potatoes, I like to plant a little party of two or three in a pot - the more the merrier! It's amazing how these humble potatoes can transform into lush, cascading vines. They're perfect for hanging baskets, adding a pop of color to my porch, or trailing around my patio. Plus, these guys are super low-maintenance. Bottom watering is a breeze with this method, and all they need is a warm spot to thrive. So, next time you have leftover sweet potatoes, don't ditch them! Give them a second chance as stunning container plants. You won't regret it!

    Hi, Rachel and Todd!
Totally appreciate and support the kid blurring!
I used to watch a lot of "family vlog" channels. At some point, they just gave me "the ick"
Anyway, thank you for making his privacy a priority!❤❤

Just so smart using the black tote!
I think we have too much moisture to hold that long here. Having a dry root cellar is a challenge here.
Enjoy your week. We strangely have snow flurries.

Can you recommend how to get started. I tried to grow slips from the grocery store sweet potato and both failed.

I grew about 100 lbs of sweet potatoes from 32 slips last year. Hopefully will have just as good a crop this year if my onions will hurry up and bulb out so I can harvest them!

I was just rewatching Rachel potting up old sweet potatoes. Came back to double check since I wanted to do same. This is my first year doing sweet potatoes, so I have none from previous year. I thought you were using the potatoes that you used for slips. Can I do that? One end has lots of roots, but the slips just came anywhere on potato, (I did the soil method). The one I had thought to use, has nothing on the part that would be out of the pot. Maybe I will have to wait until next year.

Thanks Rachel. 2 year old sweet potatoes. Sweet. Keep us in the loop on vine progress. Will you eat the leaves later. Your recipes and preserving videos are great. We're in our 70's and even oatmeal is starting to taste good again. lol

Hi! Is an outdoor greenhouse or hoop house on your wish list for the future? You have so much land space for one, I wondered if one was in the works.

You can also harvest and eat those use those vines... like when they need a haircut. I potted up a few at the end of last season and brought them in the house over the winter.

Are the ones you planted already sprouting some beginner slips or buds? If I don't have to wait for that, I may take the one or 2 I have and do this.

That will totally work! You could also pinch those off if long and put in an inch or so of water or just in some dirt to root. I cut off the sprouting end of a sweet potato I wanted to cook, put the sprouting end in a oui yogurt jar with a little water to cover about 1/3-1/2 of potato and grew a vining plant in my kitchen it reached up and wrapped around my bakers rack... kept adding water as it evaporated and popped oui jar in a more decorative jar to hide the potato, it lasted over a year 💞 It was an unintentional experiment that I only let continue because my Granddaughter eyed it and proclaimed it to be aesthetically pleasing 😊

@@1870s okay. I have it in water right now trying to grow slips so I will just wait until I see them start before I do it then.

Tried the sweet potatoe thing an it just rotted an got mushy . I tried cutting it in half then tried a whole one the only other thing I havnt tried is not putting it the window . Are you suppose to put it in sun or not is the question ?

  • @MsCindyh

I hav3 seen that if you cut the rotten part off, you can let the wound heal and still plant that part.
