  • Find out how Mechcon helped Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne with new stainless steel handrails and balustrades.
    Video Transcript:
We're here from Mechcon Welding & Fabrication.
We are here at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, Melbourne, where we have just completed a stainless steel, steel fabrication, handrails and balustrades package for Irland Brown and TRJ Engineering.
We are now inside Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, Melbourne. We have got a stairwell or a staircase running five levels, with a balustrade system on inside, and wall rails on the outside throughout.
I’ll give a brief, the finish on this is high and it’s unique and it’s definitely not for first timers, that’s fairly evident in the video, what you won’t appreciate is just some of the things we had to clarify on jobs like this is compliance, that’s a big thing, especially when we are dealing with older buildings, it does become a bit tricky so where we have to stick within the guidelines of the architectural design and somehow keep it compliant; so this time round we had to, through the shop drawings, we had to go back-and-forth with the details of how we needed to change the design to make it compliant, we had offset the balustrade off the base plate, just to open up that 1m area, we had to nominate a specific hold down bolt, that is like a countersink system, which you will see on the base plate, that was a bit of a unique design on the fly, just to keep it compliant, can’t have any tripping hazards of those base plates, we have to reduce the from the original design the diameters in the hand rails, again, just open up 1m critical inside, measurement wise it was fairly tricky, but because we pick it up right at the start and drew it up it saved a lot of hassle.
We’ve got a balustrade handrail system in one, what that means is the balustrade under the code it needs to be at least a metre, but then the handrail height needs to be a meter maximum, so intern, we have got a system here, that has to be exactly 1m of the toe of the stair, and when you’ve got nearly 200 steps we needed to carry out that 1m through every toe, on every step, so that was very tricky as well.
    Thank you for watching.
