  • In this weeks episode, the tour group visits the electronics markets of Shenzhen China. Many of the group have never been to the markets before and what they discover is the worlds largest electronic component market!
    The sheer scale and size of the markets, spread across kilometers of cityscape is impressive. There is almost nothing you cannot find in these markets. The markets contain millions of stalls, who often represent manufacturing firms in Shenzhen, and are an excellent resource for components, modules, finished goods and more. Many also have an online presence and make a personal visit to Shenzhen unnecessary, however anyone who has been to Shenzhen and the markets will tell you, that it is well worth the visit, to establish relationships with vendors, understand the eco system and grasp the magnitude of the supply chain. It is truly breathtaking and inspirational.
    A special thanks to Jon Oxer for photographing extra material for this episode. Note, some images were recorded from my trip in 2011, 2015 and the most recent trip in 2017.

    I grew up in Shenzhen and I used to search for parts for my projects during my high school years. Now that I'm in US, and the costs for parts and shipping is really expensive and it requires days of shipping. I missed the good old days! That electronics market is really the heaven for the makers. If you have exciting projects to work on it is definitely recommended to stay in Shenzhen for a couple of months while building your gadgets. Plus, it would be an interesting experience to live in another culture.

    I’ve never been there but it seems like all of my favorite components are made there. It seems like a magical place for those of us who love inventing new things. I’d love to go to Shenzhen someday.

    Awesome video! I’m heading to Shanghai in a few weeks, do you know of a similar electronics component market there?

    • @StateofElectronics
      @StateofElectronics  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you for your kind words. In Shanghai there is an area near the intersection of Beijing Dong Lu and Fujian Lu which has floors of electronics. I often go there. Its well worth the visit. That area, along Beijing Lu, you will find lots of shops that sell both electronics and metal work related tools. Its very much a fun area for geeks! Finding Arduino/Raspberry pi modules though has traditionally been scarce there but things could have changed. Good luck with your visit.
