Most hunters are just bored psychopaths with a gun obsession who have a psychological insecurity, and they don't feel complete without killing something. They have mental health problems that should be addressed by a professional. Predators play an important role in the ecosystem by taking the sick/old/weak, while humans focus on the strongest/healthiest, which harms the gene pool. Habitat loss by encroaching on animal habitat is the biggest problem in the decline of certain animal populations; humans are the problem, not predators. Overpopulation of deer is leading to the spread of wasting disease. Nature does not "need" humans to manage animals; nature did just fine for millions of years before high-powered weaponry came along. If you want to play Navy SEAL against something, go enlist and fight a war. Leave animals alone. Nature does much better overall when humans remove themselves from the equation. It's not your job to "save" deer or elk. The North American model was flawed from the beginning. Nature knows exactly what the carrying capacity is. Man does not. You are complaining about what would happen to the predator and prey population without man's intervention; it would regain a balance within a few years. Nature knows what to do. Leave it alone.
