I think maybe it's because the WIP looks like cool fanart, while if I saw both with no context, I would assume the finished version was something from an official artbook. It looks polished to the point of being indistinguishable from something made as promo art, so people may no longer register it as being something made by an artist as a labor of love.

Honestly, I personally like the look of rough art made by a talented artist as opposed to completely polished work. I think it's because if it looks too realistic, it just looks like a picture or a 3d model. When it's clearly been drawn by a person, you can really see the time that went into it and it has a very charming look.

    • @SpyCrabsUnite
      @SpyCrabsUnite Год назад +661

Yeah I've thought about that effect whenever I see incredibly detailed and almost realistic. I suppose it's the burden of being so accurate that there isn't really anything compelling to it. If I were to see art of an eye, and it was detailed down to every light reflecting off the eye, I wouldn't really gain anything from it because at that point it just looks like a regular eye. I think the sketch is more compelling because the roughness and flat shading gives it a nice charm, almost like a comic iteration of Malenia. As opposed to the finish product which looks like it can be a still from the game. Art is very technically good, but as an observer, I find there to be less interesting qualities to the final than the sketch.

It is and will be always about relatability i think. The moment people can kind of see the lines you draw and the process you went through the more impressed are they because they can relate to the work. The moment you finnish and polish a work it becomes more abstract and harder to understand what work went into it for the average viewer. I remember that this effect can be best seen in kids who are absolutely dumbfounded by someone who sketches in front of them and some fully rendered high quality picture of say a commercial product. They appreciate the product highly but are emotionally more impressed by the handmade look of the sketch. Splasharts in League of Legends take 100 hours to paint and are done masterfully with all the tricks and fundamentals you can possibly learn in digital and analog art but still people think its ez to do or is not even done manually because they dont understand the process.

I think another factor is a WIP keeps people focusing on your art more. It makes them think "what will it look like finished?" which in turn makes them like the piece more.

To me I think the biggest issue is people not understanding what goes into finishing a piece. The first WIP sketch is something I can understand how it was done. I can see the artwork and see what it would take to make it, but know I don't personally have the skills to do it were I given the tools. But the finished piece is so incredibly perfected that I honestly have no clue how difficult it would be to make it. I don't even have the slightest idea what tools were used! It seems perfect and naturally I think to myself "that person has tools that makes this possible." It isn't just a matter of the person's skill being so beyond my own, it's also the tools. Since I have no idea what tools are used it could literally be as easy as pressing four buttons and the tools just generate 99% of it. It's a skill so far removed from what most people have experience in, and then it's combined with technology most people have no awareness of.

Personally, I think the reason why the sketch got so much attention while the finished product didn't is not only because of the "rougher and more free" aesthetic of the sketch but also because you shortened the hair. To me, the part that really made an impression was the long, wavy red hair that stood in stark contrast to the grey and dull helmet. Although the finished product looks more polished, the hair shortening and reducing of volume really made the finished product feel flat and generic.

When you post the finished version, they are already "used" to the piece so it has less impact. Less new, less interest, they moved on.
I personally post crappy photos of my screen, zoomed in, taken with my phone and with an angle so we don't totally understand what's going on first, but people want to know, so they have to wait a bit until the final result... and BAM !

Sketches are less intimidating than rendered artwork. Finished artwork can make us feel insecure which can cause a feeling of repulsion or distance between the art and viewer "something too perfect or ideal" however lazier artwork is much more relatable and comfortable for our self esteem. I've noticed this greatly as I refined my skills as an artist over the years. Being too skilled in this day and age is too much for a lot of people's egos.

The thing is that a lot of finished work just looks like another piece of "good art" that you see billions of all the time. Like in this one the sketch had really cool looking harsh contrast color composition. The finished one just looks like a normal well made painting. Thats why sometimes really shity artists can have followings. Just raw quality gets old fast. Thats what Ive seen online.

That only holds true until most artist start painting in the same rough - unfinished style and realism in return becomes rare. It's a pendulum that swings back and forth just like fashion. That is why an artist should stick to the style that comes naturally to them without being swayed by the crowd. Just look at Instagram.. A few years ago realism was in and now sketches and simple, spontaneous artwork is popular.

Been there. This "viral" factor is just something that you cannot control in social media. To make something viral, that content needs to be posted on the right time, seen by the right people, retweeted by the right people, which also followed by the right people, etc, etc... if you marks all the spots, it's just a snowball effect and the post would go viral. But if you're not... well..
There are social media strategies to help you get more engagements, like post the content on "rush hour times" (like in the morning or evening where most people are commuting, or during lunch time), using catchy/clickbaity captions or certain hashtags. But if you're just unlucky, something like this video would still happen.

An idea why this happens could be, that when we look at a sketch, we think "Someone drew this", a fellow fan or something. We want to cheer for them and their passion, and are more likely to share/like. However when we see a perfectly rendered drawing, even though we know a person must have created it, in our heads it's more closely associated to what we're used to seeing from a professional piece of work, a product, like promotion art for a game. So it's no longer as personal and thus we're less likely to share/like. And since pressing that button is probably more of a gut reaction for most people, that subconcious connection to either a passionate artist or an impersonal corporation has an especially big impact.

I think it's because the sketch is the raw pure form of what you see in your minds eye when you think of something, it's simple but the basic shapes allow you to interperate what the image is this allows a wider variety of people to enjoy an image regardless of it's actual quality. this is why when it is finished and the lines and shapes become more defined it is easier to spot faults and mistakes in something that is supposed to look realistic, but in some ways falls short. It's like in that redacted berserk chapter where miura explains the idea of something. It's the perfect image and bringing it into reality isn't possible so sometimes things just look better in their unrefined idealistic forms.

Couple of reasons why this happens. One, the unfinished sketch is usually high contrast and catches the eye, it's rough and shows the artist's personality. The finished piece, while great mechanically, doesn't catch the eye as much. In the sketch you had the figure alone, so the eyes immeidately go to the hair and then the face. In the finished piece the lighting is soft, yet harsh and the fleks of ash/dust distract from the person.
Second, posting a WIP of a finished piece catches more eyes because it's the first thing people see. The finished version has essentially already been seen. Don't do things for social media likes is the lesson here. This also doesn't mean you shouldn't post WIPs. It gets views. So keep it up.

You wanted to convey 'a warrior with red hair' and your sketch did it nicely, then you proceeded to finish it and post it again.
To the audience who have seen the WIP before, it's like hearing the same story twice or getting a spoiler beforehand, which makes looking at the finished work feel less appealing.

Right, I think this is also definitely a factor. You like the wip because it's a cool image and a cool idea, and by the time the finished product gets posted you've already seen it at least once and it's no longer new so it's less exciting.

This. It's exactly this for me. At some point, you've seen the WIPs so many times that when the finished drawing finally appears on your feed, you'll just go "I've seen this already" and scroll past it without thinking much about it.

Right. Most of the comments are talking about style and relatability. But it's just the fact that . . . people have already seen it. If you just post the finished piece, it will get all that attention that the WIP got. You don't have to post WIPs.

The way you drew her hair is just fucking amazing. I admire those who can draw well like this man

I draw a lot in class and at this point if I’m doing a dumb drawing that’s not detailed everyone’s like “wow your so good” “I wish I could draw like you” “I can’t even draw a stick figure” and when I’m doing a good drawing with detail every is either like “nice” “cool” “wow” it gets kinda annoying when people are say things like that

I must confess, no twitter eu dou mais likes em WIPs do que dou em artes finalizadas. É muito bom ver o processo de produção e as técnicas de cada ilustrador
