OMG! My dad drove the 1973 Town and Country in green. He got 9 miles to the gallon. My sister and I loved riding on the jump seat in the back. I think he had the basic model. My mother had the basic Newport. I made a comment on your other video. Thanks for the great memories and for saving automotive history. We do remember getting yelled at for putting our fingers in the ashtrays and flicking them on each other. It was like a gray snowstorm in the car!😂

Great to see the wagon. I had a 74 Plymouth Grand Fury Station Wagon. Loved that car with its fits 9 interior and 440 engine. Just couldn't stop the rear end coming around in even the lightest of snow.
Excellent comparison video. Thank you for taking the time to film and upload this very informative and interesting video. I hate to say it but if it was 1977 and any one of us knowing what we know now, we would have a fleet of these with all different options and different models. We would have a warehouse full. But it would be a beautiful thing. And I agree with a viewer who wrote a comment that demo derbies should be illegal and i agree. Stop destroying history. Preserve it instead please. They will never make these again unfortunately.
Thank you for the kind comment! I completely agree. No need to demo derby these cars. As you said, they're not making these cars anymore. So whatever is left now, that's it!
Very cool! And you have the right mindset and attitude towards these original classics. We really need that in our young generation. I am just like you and its our duty to preserve classics like these. To be their custodians. So yes, a lovely collection you have there.
That wagon is awesome. Very rarely do you see these. No one saved them. And any of the ones who survived were sent to a demolition derby. Same goes for the Newport. They worked great..dont ask how i know. I have a 76 New yorker brougham 2 door 440 car. So this was a fun watch! 👍👍
Hey great video, but I just want to point out a few things. The vinyl / chrome molding that's on the side of the car is not "door edge protectors". It's actually called "body side molding" and were probably installed by the dealer or the owner did it themselves as I don't see it on the option sheet. Door edge protectors are chrome strips that slide onto the edges of the door, so when you open the door, you don't chip the paint on the door edge if you hit something like a garage wall or another car. Your sedan has wheel covers, not hub caps. Hub caps only cover the center of the wheel (where the lug nuts are). Sometimes people refer to them as dog dish hub caps.
I think that the "door edge protectors" that you are thinking of were aftermarket. It was a u-shaped plastic extrusion that was sold by the foot at auto-supply stores that the DIY-er would cut to length and slip over the door edge. I remember my parents' 2 door C-body had these (in addition to "body side moldings")......almost a necessity as those doors were probably 5 or 6 feet long.
I’ve been watching your videos on these car’s they are amazingly nice really great that you have saved them!!! There’s nothing like those wonderful old cars, can’t wait to see what’s next, great job man keep it up 👍
Hi there - interesting video. I have had a look on an earlier video and you have the standard a/c system. If you had auto temp control, the temp lever would have numbered temp settings in Fareinheit instead of 'Hot' and 'Cold'. Pretty sure the fan settings have an 'Auto' setting as well
You guys do a great job. I really like the informative banter that you two have going on. I had a '77 Cordoba 400 4 Barrel With The Lean burn. I had to replace it two years in but I think where it failed was it sat right on top of the engine and baked all those delicate electronic parts. But when it ran well it ran strong. Great video guys!
@@theunskilledmechanic bought my Cordoba new, Triple maroon, just single exhaust, bucket seats and counsel, killer FM stereo, and air were the main options along with the 400 4bbl. $6,300 or so was the sticker price. Was a fun car
The gas tanks in the two cars had totally different geometry, but you're right on how capacity was limited by space available in the body. The T&C tank is somewhat vertical in orientation. Think of it as a counterbalance to the spare tire. The Newport tank is more horizontal.

Hi ! Thanks for sharing these cars and all the details. I love your channel ,the content and the cars, especially that 73 C body you scored at the Texas Mopar hoard sale. You might want to photo the option plates for both these cars to see exactly what they were optioned with. ON some Mopar's, you can run the VIN online or write away for a full decode for the entire car, from order to build and delivery. If you need help doing this, I do all my Mopar's and have done so for 20+ years of my 40 working on Mopar's professionally. Yes, the road wheels are super sweet and a nice addition to any one of these. The wing windows are an odd-duck, I've never seen one with them in 1976/-77. 400 and the 440 were not that different in horsepower or torque. The Lean Burn may have something to do with the lack of performance in the 400, but I'd bet the wagon has better gears for the towing package I think I saw it had. Also look for a clogged catalytic converter, high manifold vacuum would be the forst give away. All told, both cars should perform similarly, my thought would be the Neport was faster but the T&C has more torque for towing down low. The Newport likely had highway gears 2:73 or higher, maybe even in the 2:50's, whereas the T&C with tow package would have had deeper/lower gears, think 3:23, 3:55, or 3:73. I don't think 3:91's were an option in this year car, let alone without the Sure Grip differential, but they might have been available on the wagon special order with the tow package and no Sure Grip. I'd really like to see the option plates on these cars and see how they are optioned. I'm looking forward to more of your Mopar content soon! Maybe a 70's Magnum or Cordoba. Rich Corinthian Leather, I didn't know they had cows in Corinth! Ciao! It is nice to see young guys and gals getting into the older cars, especially the cars that were not popular collector, IE A and B bodies. " I really love the motor in this car, it's FAST" or similar quote directly from the nut driving the doo- doo Brown C body coupe hard top in the movie. That car was fast and hiked up in the rear end. Good looking and good running C-Body!
Wow, thank you so much for the comment! If you'd like, send us an email at: theunskilledmechanic@gmail.com. I'd be happy to send you pictures of the fender tags off of the Town & Country and the Newport. You'd probably be able to decode them much better than I could. 23:20 Fuselage wagons could have rear a/c, but I don't think that later C-body wagons could have it. What you probably saw in the D-pillar was a radio speaker.
8-track option? Huh. I remember as a teen in the late 70s I could buy Pioneer Super Tuners - the 8-track version was a lot less expensive compared to the cassette version because it was on it's way out. Maybe Chrysler just hadn't caught up in 77.
If you look back, the 74 New Yorker looked like your Newport, and the 74 Newport had different tail lights...After 75, the New Yorker adopted the Imperial body style, and the Newport Adopted the New Yorker's body style...The top end options available were all adopted from the 74 and 75 Chrysler Lebaron Imperial, however the only option that was dropped was the 4 wheel disk brakes, available only for 74 and 75 Chrysler Lebaron Imperial. My 74 imperial had the 4 wheel disk brakes, they stopped on a dime, and the pumpkin on the rear end was massive, like the size of a stop sign...shape as well...lol. I believe it was a Dana. It was a nice car, unfortunately I had to sell it. Imperials were non poster cars.
I am also looking for a 76 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham with the same steering wheel as your Newport and it's hard to find. As a kid growing up in the 1980s my mom had a black 76 New Yorker Brougham it's was black with black vinyl roof red pinstripes red velour interior with the your Newport steering wheel. She bought it brand new & it was her baby. She was only 4'11 LOL. It had the power drivers seat so it was up to the steering wheel & up as high as it could go but she drove it like a professional lol. I loved that car and that's why I'm looking for one for the memories it will bring. I lost my mom in 2010😞 so It will a sentimental meaning. I love your cars your doing great job with them and I also will drive it as a daily over anything on the road today.
Hey Collin! Wonderful video, it warms my heart seeing a young lad taking a genuine interest and having a real love for the large Chrysler products. You have an excellent mentor getting you to speak of all the features and options for these cars. I too would have checked off Sure-Grip too, most of my vehicles have some sort of limited slip or locking type differentials. Yes, too it is sad many of these cars have met a sad fate. BTW, put on a manifold stove pipe to the air cleaner on the Sedan, you will find cool weather drive ability will improve, especially when damp, the heated air will help prevent carburetor icing. The sedan's compressor has what is called an inertia ring. It helps to dampen any vibrations from the large two cylinders of the compressor. These are very robust units. I really look forward to the continuing stories about the C-bodies. Thank you for posting!
@@theunskilledmechanic you are very welcome! I enjoy the grass root and genuine enthusiasm you display. No gimmicks or spending 5 minutes asking people to subscribe etc. Your demeanor does this plenty good for you!
Very cool pair of cars. It's good to see them together especially since 78 was the last year for these cars. had a 74 Newport in triple green but it was very rotted out.
my dad bought new 74 green Newport & 78 lt blue Newport, both were under estimated at the time, i wish I could had them cars but my dad was like time for new car new payment book, to only see great cars go
I had a 77 Cordoba 400 4 barrel. It was a gas hog but ran good. Easiest radiator and water pump replacement I ever done. The dash would vibrate when you punched it and the 4 bbl opened up. It had am-fm 8-track. That damn Lean Burn was removed.
Edmunds new car prices - gives all options and prices. Very useful tool; over the years I've collected 1969 through end of publication (2004?) I think I've got all the original brochures for Chrysler too, late 50's through the 90's or early 2000s. Odd that the wagon doesn't have a roof rack. Missing the 'T&C package' I assume. Chrysler offered 2 trailer packages - the upgraded one was reasonable expensive so am inclined to believe you got the trans & steering coolers, etc. with it. Nice thing about the T&C is the 50/50 slit bench; cost more on the Newport.
@@theunskilledmechanic my pleasure, actually am very familiar with these big C body mopars from 60's and 70's . I know the answers to most your questions but didn't want to sound like a know it all hahaha 😆
The vent windows were for smokers to flick the ashes out of them when open so the ashes won't fly around the car lol. Smokers vent windows lot of people smoked in the 70s lol
Times have changed, that's for sure! I'm glad we can share these cars with everyone. They serve as a great way to travel back in time while behind the wheel.
Oh you can get the battery cover with the Caps on them online. It's just to give the today's batteries that vintage look. It has port Holes so you can put it over the port's & connect the cable's so your battery works. It's just a cover to give it the vintage look
Automatic temperature control will be on your interior controls . The controls will be a temp control starting from 60 to 90 degrees . You set and forget it. It's like a home thermostat. Heating and air conditioning will be fully automated
Also, the Newport is not “Inca Gold“. We had a 1976 Cordoba that was painted in “Inca gold“, and it was much darker than that. I believe the color of the Newport is “golden fawn“.
Just ran across you video....liked/subscribed on first vid. You guys have a good presence/presentation. Our family took delivery (special ordered) 77 NY Brougham as I was getting my license in '77. I know a fair amount about this era of Chryslers as I was very interested in cars, as well my father worked for Chrysler at that time. The road wheels were a major favorite for my family.....they eliminated the chance of "losing" a hubcap. They did have trim rings on them but virtually unable to be lost during drive. Feel free to contact me on any random questions regarding this era of Chryslers....id be delighted to share any knowledge ive got or answer any strange or obscure questions you may have. One random thought on the "speed control" Chrysler was among the first to offer the "resume" feature. GM didnt offer that until maybe 79 in the Cadillac. Notice on older gm's there is just the "set" at end of turn signal. The lean burn system was sort of a problem even being new as it sort of starved the engine of fuel.....the technology was advanced but not perfected when introduced. Again, enjoy your channel and looking forward to watching more.....I would welcome trying to answer obscure questions.
Hey Greg, we’re glad you found our channel! Your families New Yorker sounds like it was a gorgeous car. If you have any pictures that you’d like to share, feel free to shoot us an email. We’ll definitely keep you in mind if we have some questions that come up. Thank you for watching!
@@theunskilledmechanic Hey, id be glad to.....it was a big deal for us. the imperial had just been discontinued (76) and that was "the top" of what was available. Car was totaled in '80 after they dropped me at Purdue from a weekend at home. Jack from trunk driven thru fold down armrest in back where id been sitting doing homework when the car was rear-ended. Send me an email address to send pix to. again im sure I can answer obscure Chrysler questions of that time. as well to your email I will shoot random memories as they come. I may have the window sticker on that car,...I havce one place to look. you can email me at naplespelicanmarsh@gmail.com
I think you’re wrong about the Newport color. Read the under hood build tag for the code to see for sure. I would guess the wagon also had HD suspension since it has a factory tow package. The rear axle ratio might also be lower for towing which may explain the considerably better performance feel compared to the Newport.
An interesting option with newports, and new yorkers, you could order them with or without door posts...aka poster or non poster cars...the non poster cars, once all windows are rolled down, looked to have one large continuous window from fron to back on both sides...no door posts to seperate front from rear. I have also noticed that poster cars have higher ground clearance than non poster cars.
WD-40 and a ballast resistor always good things to have when driving a old Chrysler. Try doing your driving test in a town and country. "now please parallel park"
I have a 78 Newport, and I have a question. The pillar swooping down next to rear window is shaped differently on mine. It has more of a faster flowing look. Is this only on 78's?? Or is it a different trim level? I haven't figured out why some newports look a little different there...
You're fortunate not to have the Auto Temp II. They're difficult to repair. My first car was a beige 68 T&C wagon. Now I have a 77 New Yorker Brougham identical to the one on the front cover of the brochure, very low mileage, all original w/ the 8 track, in Syracuse. Let me know if you'd like to get together! I'd like to see your cars too.
If you're looking for a '77 New Yorker Brougham, I have a 4-door hardtop I might want to part with to help fund a '66 Imperial. The NYB has a 400, standard electronic ignition, body is in great shape, a bunch of new consumable parts but very original otherwise. Runs and drives very well. Contact me for details if interested.
New York let’s you register vintage plates. As long as they are from the same period the car is from. So you can’t put 1960’s plates on a 1970’s era car.
If your car doesn't have ATC, the controls will look like at 2:56 in the video. ATC models have a control to select a certain temp and the system maintains that setting. ruclips.net/video/cCErcMvrhbU/видео.html
these were the bottom of the barrel way back when , they cost 50-200 dollars ,did run ,when something went out like a belt or alternator you left them were they landed
I have an idea for a show ....take that Newport now as is and get some 0 to 60 x 0 to 100 times using app on smart phone. Then A few inexpensive...as far as a Ball spinning on a flat earth goes....should wake it up.... take that 400 carburetor and replace carburetor with a 440 high performance 1 from 1972. Remove distributor replace with a direct connection high performance distributor and necessary parts for it. Replace the plugs and wires with NGK plugs in 8 mm wires. Remove belt from air conditioning unit. Check fuel pressure replace with high volume and high-volume hoses and also check for closeness 2 exhaust to minimize vapor lock. Time the engine go multiple times until you get the heat range of plugs right to fuel shouldn't be that difficult remove smog s*** if must do but I think you could just block up any hoses that are there many will connect right to that carburetor with PCV valve Etc. Get some good fuel you got to throw some ice on the intake throw some ice on the intake with some burlap bags. The plugs will tell you what's up its most important get that heat range right on that motor timing right then go do some 0 to 60 times 0 to 100 times using same app on your phone. Food for thought my friends.... enjoy the show ...you guys are like Peanut butter is to Jelly ...like Dick is to Asshley...like Mo is to Par....like Led is to Zeppelin. 😉😎 Well done!! Cheers bro's! Bless you all
Oh , you will know when the lean burn is not running ! The car will stop running......period . Also the car will just stop running no matter where you are or how fast your going. I think the color of the Newport sedan is Fawn Gold. It was a very popular color back then and I had a 77 Gran Fury that was Fawn Gold.
Can't wait to watch this later in the evening with more time at hand, currently 18:50 pm here.
👍 in advance.
Don't tire your self trying for a hard sale, I buy both! lol
I hope enjoy the video! Let us know what you think.
@@KenanTurkiye I must be a pretty good salesman... or not, lol!
The door edge moldings are actually on the edge of the door
I am sorry to hear about your mom, Billy. You will find one eventually. As you probably know, it's a process. Once you find the right one you'll know!
Try looking again . The vent windows are a option for newport for 4 door only .
Vent window was manual only .
Yes, it's also on the window sticker. I haven't seen many 77 Newports with that option.
Glad you enjoyed! That’s wild about the A/C compressor, I never knew that. Thank you for your continued support, we really appreciate it!
@@theunskilledmechanic you are very welcome! I enjoy the grass root and genuine enthusiasm you display. No gimmicks or spending 5 minutes asking people to subscribe etc. Your demeanor does this plenty good for you!
I would love to see these at Chrysler nationals at carli'll
27:00 The towing mirrors were probably aftermarket. They were removable; they clamped to the wheel arch and hood/fender opening.
Very cool pair of cars. It's good to see them together especially since 78 was the last year for these cars. had a 74 Newport in triple green but it was very rotted out.
I saw that wagon on scotty kilmer’s channel.
Yup, that was us!

Nice 👍
I heard from him that your tires were 30 years old. Do they even make replacements for the white walls?
@@42luke93 Yes, they do. Amazon and Walmart sell them. The ones on my Newport are new. I’ll pick some up for the wagon soon.
my dad bought new 74 green Newport & 78 lt blue Newport, both were under estimated at the time, i wish I could had them cars but my dad was like time for new car new payment book, to only see great cars go
I had a 77 Cordoba 400 4 barrel. It was a gas hog but ran good. Easiest radiator and water pump replacement I ever done. The dash would vibrate when you punched it and the 4 bbl opened up. It had am-fm 8-track. That damn Lean Burn was removed.
I love the Cordoba’s! I bet the 400 was a blast.
Haha. The beginning was funny.
Glad you enjoyed, Julie!
Great video and content, however lose the sunglasses. It’s a well-known fact in video production that people would like to see your eyes.
Nice video! Love these vehicles and your videos
BTW door edge guards are the stainless strips on the door edge- the horizontal vinyl strip is called body side molding -both were optional
Thank you for watching!
@@jamesmontan9189 Good to know. Thank you for sharing!
@@theunskilledmechanic my pleasure, actually am very familiar with these big C body mopars from 60's and 70's . I know the answers to most your questions but didn't want to sound like a know it all hahaha 😆
@@jamesmontan9189 Not at all. Share your knowledge, haha! We really appreciate it.
That is not a "door edge protector" you're referring to in the video when you first mention options ..
I believe I saw this online somewhere. It was with the red caps. It really is a great look, in my opinion.
Great stuff!
Thank you!
The 4 Dr Newport sedan looks more like “golden fawn” exterior color. Spanish gold metallic was much darker.
You are correct. I checked the window sticker to confirm.
Automatic temperature control will be on your interior controls . The controls will be a temp control starting from 60 to 90 degrees . You set and forget it. It's like a home thermostat.
Heating and air conditioning will be fully automated
Wow, that's pretty wild! Neither of these cars were optioned with it.
Also, the Newport is not “Inca Gold“. We had a 1976 Cordoba that was painted in “Inca gold“, and it was much darker than that. I believe the color of the Newport is “golden fawn“.
You are correct. I checked the window sticker to confirm. Nice catch!
My mother had a Newport in Golden Fawn. Great color!
the strange hole in the grill of the wagon might have been where someone installed a block heater...
That's a good theory.
Scotty Kilmer had a Town &Country just like that one on his channel 2 days ago.
Just noticed it IS the same one same license plates
@@thesultan4030 Yup, that was us!
You are indeed correct! The Newport is Golden Fawn. I double checked the window sticker.
I think your Newport is awesome looking, I would like to buy it, just need cash, lol.
I love the pillar-less cars. Very sleek styling. Heck, I love them all!

That's a good question. I've never even noticed that...
You should taken both of them for a test drive
My 1977 Newport has the 235/75/15 tires and rims.
Those colors were used a lot in bathrooms in the sixties and seventies.
Wow, that’s fancy… is it? Lol!
And in kitchens, too! The appliances were avocado green or harvest gold.
I would like to know if the new yorker has a smooth quiet ride
They could have just decoded the vin tags ? What’s up with that ?
If you're looking for a '77 New Yorker Brougham, I have a 4-door hardtop I might want to part with to help fund a '66 Imperial. The NYB has a 400, standard electronic ignition, body is in great shape, a bunch of new consumable parts but very original otherwise. Runs and drives very well. Contact me for details if interested.
I saw the wagon on Scotty Kilmers channel
We love Scotty over here! My ‘77 Newport was also featured on his channel a year ago.
Do you sell any of these ?
They should make demo derby illegal !!!!!!!
Is this the wagon that appeared on Scotty Kilmer Channel?
Yes, it is!
How is the Newport still rocking those 70’s NY plates? I thought NY made everyone replate in the 80’s?
New York let’s you register vintage plates. As long as they are from the same period the car is from. So you can’t put 1960’s plates on a 1970’s era car.
If your car doesn't have ATC, the controls will look like at 2:56 in the video. ATC models have a control to select a certain temp and the system maintains that setting. ruclips.net/video/cCErcMvrhbU/видео.html
You have to put the orange plates on the other car the wagon
Steel wool or aluminum foil and coke will clean the 440 bumper as nice as the 400.
Now its time for a drag race ? lol
It will be the most drawn-out drag race in history, lol!
these were the bottom of the barrel way back when , they cost 50-200 dollars ,did run ,when something went out like a belt or alternator you left them were they landed
Food for thought my friends.... enjoy the show
...you guys are like Peanut butter is to Jelly ...like Dick is to Asshley...like Mo is to Par....like Led is to Zeppelin. 😉😎

Also the car will just stop running no matter where you are or how fast your going.
It will start again as soon as it cools off but will shut off as soon it heats up again .
