For this week's sky practice, I've divided my page into 4 with masking tape and paint 4 different skies, 2 for practice and 2 for experimentation.
I'm trying out our new handmade paints in half pans today in Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue and Davidson's Grey. You can of course paint these with any brand of paint in the same coloirs, or your own favourite sky colours. You can substitute Paynes Grey for Davidson's grey.
I'm using Millford cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, and various brushes as mentioned in the video, but use what wever brushes you are happiest with.

Ohh love this tutorial!!
I did all of these before work at the by the lake!❤
I learnt so much from you tonight and got a mini sea lesson too, tks
I like the way you used your brush to make the clouds - nice
Oh my! I tried the second sky this morning and it was MAGIC! I think we get hung up on trying to paint the shapes of clouds by painting around those shapes which never look natural. I love lifting paint, but have never just painted a solid sky and then lifting as you did with a flat brush! Thank you!!!
Love these little studies! And the new profile picture! Thank you Lois!
I love your experimental skies
Thanks so much! 💐🎨
Thank you Lois I am just beginning to experiment with watercolour and find your videos most inspiring. As a very mature person I wondered whether I would be able to learn to paint but now I have tried a few of your demo’s my confidence is increasing. Many thanks once again.
Elizabeth
THANK YOU!!!! I’ve tossed out countless reams of paper and watched hours of videos and have not been able to achieve the desired cloud effect until your video. The second sky is absolutely perfect and easy to achieve. So glad I stumbled upon your videos! Have a wonderful New Year!🎉
Beautiful sharing dear.
Excellent. The fourth is my favourite.
Thanks Robert, mine too. What started out as a potential disaster eventually resolved itself!
I love that 4th one too!! Wow!
Love it! More small studies, please!
I like that you did this. Thank you!
Thank you Lois
Those are awesome examples
Thanks so much 💐🎨
COFFEE MAKER!!!!????
Okay then ,south east to the sisters, then follow my nose. I'm on my way... Lol
It never fails to encourage me when an accomplished artist "practices" skies and shares it with us. Now, if I was a glider pilot and saw number 4, I'd stay in the canteen. Spectacular, but from a flyers point of view, very bumpy. I love watching how the drying of watercolour, pulls a finished painting nicely together. Even when I have a go, it looks better dry, than wet.
Got an interesting painting lined up. I saw a video about an archeological dig in Israel, and they uncovered a 3400 year tablet. (Not aspirin...lol). With Hebrew writing on it. I thought that that would be a nice little challenge, especially when getting the writing correct. Looking forward to that. A million miles from my comfort zone, and should be fun.
Love the video, a great expression of freehand experiments.
TTFN.
That sounds like a great idea Graham, a fascinating subject too
So timely. I'm on holiday in Scotland and have my half pan paints to paint a mini sky a day! I'm trying to build confidence to paint skies without watching a video as I go! Thank you
How wonderful! I hope you enjoy experimenting without putting pressure on yourself!
@@LoisDavidsonArt I have painted one a day and I would say 3 have turned out OK! Plus I had a go at Lake District one without a boat. Planning to add cormorant silhouette when at home...
Thank you Lois. I'll try these. You're so talented btw.
Thank you! ⭐️🎨💐
Excellent!! I just love #4
Thank you very much for this lesson. Très intéressant et instructif.... j'adore le dernier ciel 😶🌫 ! I will look to your playlist for more sky practices...(sorry for the mistakes, I speak french). Martine.
Lois, this is so helpful. I love your art voice and videos
Lois, you are so inspiring! How exciting to have your own handmade pigments. The Escoda brush you are using, it looks like such a great versatile brush..even on small paintings.
It’s all looking fantastic especially the 3rd one. 👏
Thanks so much! 🎨💐
I love this idea! Great instructions. And I love your handmade pigments. 🎨
Thanks so much Delphine, I'm glad to hear you like the paints!
Four different sky’s; four different techniques. I’m going to try this and see what happens. Thanks.
Thanks Malcolm 💐🎨
Thank you
As always a great lesson in loose and experimental watercolors . I just received Prussian Blue and can’t wait to give it a go. Love your last stormy sky. Thank you Lois
Very enjoyable!
СПАСИБО БОЛЬШОЕ, ОЧЕНЬ ЗДОРОВО!!!! 💐👏👏❤️
Thanks Vladislav, I’m glad you enjoyed it! 🎨💐
My favorites are the top 2. 😬
I think the bottom left experiment looked really good before the drastic change. A sky like that would’ve made sense in the scenes I was Imagining
Excellent feedback, thanks, something you could take and try in your own sky practice
Thank you once again- this has been a pleasure to watch and listening to you. I love how describe what you are doing.
I absolutely love the Davidsons Gray.
Will you your Daughter be at Makers Central, in May?
Thanks so much Ralph, we only sell online at present, so I'm afraid not!
😁👏👏
