There's a forest of tamarind trees along Salween River not far from our village. They bear very sour and big fruits. Though the leaves all fell down, there are lots of tamarind fruits on the tree. I shook some fruits down and gathered a full basket of them. I made some tamarind fruit cakes for grandma, tamarind fruit candies for Ahao, tamarind fruit wine for Grandpa and a jar of tamarind fruit vinegar that can last for a whole year. Vinegar can be eaten in many ways. Since it's getting hot these days, I made some spicy chicken feet with vinegar, which is really tasty.

    Have you heard this poem
    Tamarind :
Nobody knows where my Tamarind stood
    Just by a winding lane.
Each year it gave me fruit and shade, and drew
    Me to my home again.
I loved to sit beneath her shady boughs,
And rest up for a while,
To gaze out upon the distant blue hills,
    With laughter and a smile.
And now that I’m back, I’m eager to find,
    My tamarind again.
I hasten down to that favourite spot,
I search... but search in vain.
Then I stop and I stare; I stand quite still
    I listen to my heart.
That magnificent tree, that was my life,
    Has just been ripped apart.
I turn to the hills, my eyes filled with tears
For sure, I've lost my soul.
Where once it stood tall, there's nothing there now,
    Merely an empty hole.

"Asam Jawa" is the term for tamarind in Indonesia. Tamarind is widely used in various cooking spices, Indonesian salad spices, to make sour candy, and can also be used for traditional medicine (called Jamu). In Indonesia, the tamarind tree is also known as one of the haunted trees where ghosts live.

I love tamarind cooked into a candy with rock sugar sprinkles on it (you have to spit out the seeds) & also as a souring ingredient in a filipino soup called 'sinigang'. Would love to try these chinese recipes that dianxi is using with tamarind. The fruit itself is prehistorically indigenous to africa & then eventually made its way nearby to subcontinent of india.
