After John‘s 2nd Video in a week, I simply called him this morning - having a great conversation with him!
He is such a nice guy and super tasteful player and seems to really like the AMP1 😊…
So we are connected through our love for music, great gear and the AMP1 …😊
Life is good!
It’s great to meet good people 😊
Cheers, Thomas Blug
Trouble is Thomas, I'll want my amp 1 back after John's finished with it 😂
I've toured exclusively with the Mercury and the Iridium editions for a few years and they are excellent sounding .The form factor is unmatched and for those who don't like the menu diving, its a great sounding and versatile option.
Too many of us listen with our eyes, me included But I took the punt on a Mercury Edition and then the Iridium. I love my Bogner, Matchless and CAA heads but sometimes they don't suit the gig and the Amp1's are always great. I remember a sound guy was very sniffy when I showed up with the Mercury on a little board and suggested I use the other band's real amp - afterwards he asked if he could take a picture of it as he was so blown away by the tone! 😆
I love my Amp1 Mercury and Iridium and Thomas Blug is a truly genius!
The Rec Out is a 4x12 analog sim. You'll go crazy over the Rec Out when an actual speaker is connected in the Speaker Out. I'm 100% positive you will have a blast!
You had fun at the end there 😃.
You can program the three buttons on the Amp1 to be any mix of the channels with or without the boost.. I didn't find that I needed more than the three so I never bothered with the remote. The BluBox is a huge improvement on the DI output.
Thanks for the video John! I got my first Amp1 in 2015. Had no idea what to do with it. Bought way too much gear in between then and now, and here I am back to a Mercury with HX Effects or Helix... cabless with IEM these days.
Caught that “hawk tuah”
Me too. I did a double take.
@@LordBranstySame!
It's great that you are taking up this topic again. I wanted to write a comment on the last video about the AMP1 anyway...
Unfortunately, most people don't understand the concept of this amp. Despite many explanations, many people don't realize that this thing is actually a fully-fledged 100-watt tube amp. No modeling, no digitally recreated sounds, it´s as analog as can be! The Nano tube quality is military grade, so it should be extremely reliable. In any case, no comparison to normal tubes.
It's definitely worth delving deep into the AMP1 and watching a lot of videos. Thomas Blug is first and foremost a live player and has really put some thought into the complete layout of the device.
It is definitely NOT a 100 watt tube amp. It's a 100 watt class D transistor amp.
@@joeltunnah As far as I know it´s a combination of both in the both section "...As the Amp1 proves, one box can accommodate all three technologies. It’s an analog preamp, a clean channel with three amp models, and a power section that combines a “nanotube” (long-lasting miniature tube) with a Class D transistor power amp. The tube creates the natural compression and chewy tones of a valve amplifier...."
I think it’s extremely good at the handful of sounds it does, but that’s what makes me excited for AmpX. Same quality that isn’t limited to that specific amp collection
Great rendition!!! But don't forget, You used the Remote 1 only in Direct Mode. You can also use the Pteset mode, up to 36 Presets!! Containing Gain, Volume, Second Master/PowerSoak,Reverb On Off, Channel, Boost On Off... 💪🎸❤️
I have mentioned it. Maybe we need a third video?
@@tonystartup3817 WOW !!! Looking for!!! Thanx !!! Thomas will be happy, too ;-)
Got a silver it's amazing!
Hauk Tuah!! 👍
I really want to see this "Tony Up The Road" on your channel one day.
Tony from up the road is just a hack on guitar though, be quite a downgrade from John. I've just been doing it long enough to pick up some interesting gear
Agreed - it is a killer product. Perfect for people who get option paralysis with modellers. Together with a blubox or similar and a few pedals or HxStomp/HxFx one has stellar tone in a highly portable package that is still analog in its core
Good, Amp1 and Line6 HXFX, my go to rig last couple of years 😀
Does even more than i am even using it.
Running Midi cable from Reomte1 to HXFX you can change effects on HXFX using presets on Remote1
If you have IR loader, it is really easy to stick DI box from Amp1 speaker out to DI box and use DI box pad to get the signal to line level and run that to IR loader and to the desk, and same time use cabinet on stage from DI box to speaker.
You can run Midi Cable from Remote1 to HXFX and change effects same time you choose different preset from Remote1
Same here for me
Wait until amp X comes out. It will be epic !
You can dial out some bass as you go through the channels with the side controls. The side tone controls generally go dark and warm one side to bright and more cutting on the other

Blugie's United in Tone 🎉
Great video. I looked at this 2-3 years ago, and the reason I didn't go forward with it might surprise you: I saw demo after demo showcasing the fantastic sound of the unit, flexibility, etc. But EVERY demo, and I mean EVERY demo was by Thomas Blug himself - there didn't seem to be any sort of independent demos or reviews at all. It made me wonder whether anyone other than Thomas could get a good sound out of this thing. I'm not criticizing Thomas for his hard work in marketing his product - any entrepreneur would do the same. But it was a red flag to me that he was in every demo out there.
Look up Euge Valovirta and he has a great demo of the amp1 at home in his studio. He’s toured with it and I think may still be touring with it.
It’s all over the guitar parts on my #majikband album Primordium ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_ks1GvKZrtK-DaLNxD3M8TBNmOlZJlZPNY&si=koBdOzuJvkfCRQg9
I agree. To me this was a mistake by Thomas. He was probably very nervous about his product being misrepresented as a gimmick and not a proper amp. But imagine if he sent one to Pete Thorn? Or Michael Nielsen?
Jennifer Batten uses BluGuitar - ruclips.net/video/FV6ANBOAoPU/видео.html
@@SperzelI did send one to Michael Nielsen…😂 and „we did a video“
Pete is just too expensive for me as a small company. But I love his demos!!!!
Greetings, Thomas Blug 😊
Currently sitting in a coffee shop trying not to laugh out loud at 3:45
Think what the new TB X will be like when it finally gets here!
Unfortunately waiting forever for the Amp X, it got delayed
Thomas is gigging his amp X now. It's starting to do the field trials so it's coming. I think it's good that he won't release it until he's thoroughly used it and worked out any bugs but the wait is frustrating
Funny, bought an Amp1 used 2 weeks ago and am impressed. Not so much about the clean channel which is much darker compared to the other channels, independent from the tone control.
I gig with an Amp1 and a POD Go. Super easy, tones are fantastic, no issues with this rig since I started with it about eighteen months ago. Because of JNC, I recently decided to pick up an HX Stomp and a Fender FR12 to possibly replace that rig. Not quite sure yet.
I've borrowed a few amps from John over the last couple of years. I had his mesa boogie MK3, the one all in lovely wood with the wicker grill. Was happy to get back to my amp 1 as it was just so much easier to use and dial in. I've got the headfirst dirty Shirley clone at the moment and that's great - but I can do everything it can do on the vintage channel of the amp 1.
I think using it in a 4 cable way with an hx stomp/or similar will give you a very flexible super compact rig with just 2 pedals. In the hx stomp you can split the path and an IR hard panned one side to go to the mixer/front of the house, and the non IR side to go to the fx return on the Amp1 => Cabinet. If there's something the Amp1 doesn't give you, you can have a patch that bypasses the amp1 preamp section in favor of an HX stomp one and then still use the Amp1 power section.
Forgot to mention you can also connect the hx stomp midi out to the Amp1, needs an adapter :/, and program footswitches 4/5 to send midi signals to switch to the classic and modern channels
Blackstar should be ashamed of themselves and they should be boycotted.
@@DrTortoiselle yeah, it's a bit to close for coincidence isn't it.
This was my rig for a while (Amp1 and HX FX), great kit. I never got on with the external remote though, it added a ton of weight to the setup.
Agreed. Plus the buttons in the remote were crap and often didn't engage unless you really pressed them flat. Great tones though.
You don't need the remote with the HXFX, just use midi.
@@asarcadyn2414 the Amp1's remote, that this video is about.
I've never had a problem with the buttons on the remote, it's been faultless. Does add a fair bit of versatility to the amp 1, but it you have other midi devices it's not needed so much
yeah it almost really reacts like a tube amp to a point where for it it sounds UNREAL on some days and on others I just want to straight throw it in the bin
I did run with the mercury edition for a year, but had to get two replacement units due to faults. I've been using other gear since, due to the reliability issues, but that being said, I do miss the little thing.
You am a very good player. Note my excellent grammar.
GT1000 had an update 😉
I tried the Amp 1 a couple of times. The second time 'cos I'd missed the side controls. I even went to a Thomas Blug demo event where he demoed matching tones of other amps in the room. The demo went on so long, I didn't get to try it at the event. The 2nd time was after the TB demo. I never managed to get a sound Iiked from it. I didn't care for the sounds TB chose to demo, that's why I wanted to try it at the demo. I did give it a thorough try the 2nd time and found the I couldn't get the right eq on any of the available options. If there's a specific mellower version the future, I'll check it, but ATM it, and the speaker it's paired with, has a particular sound that doesn't work for me.
I really fancy one but that's me being greedy. If I have to replace my amp though, the Amp1 is at the top of the list. And a Zilla cab.
That's exactly what I use this one through, just one of their 1x12 ported cab with a neo creamback so it's pretty light too
@@tonystartup3817 Oooh, their ported cab is epic! I had one for a while, but am back on Fendery combos now. I would love to have their bigged-up ported cab with the Celestion Fullback.
If it allowed you to load amp captures, I’d be all over it.
It's not a modeler. It's a real amp.
@@FranciscoYosores ehhh real amps have tubes and are usually connected to speakers
why go with something special like the blu? get a kemper like all the other sardines.
@@yaniv-nos-tubesyour understanding of amplification is oudated. Learn more about the product before making such statements.
I am waiting for the amp x to come and maybe replace this setup…
Issue with those stuff is that they react to the load of the real cab… and so they sound cool plugged to real cab but not so good in direct out with the simulated load. You have to use a proper load and IR
Great sounding setup. I noticed a bit of tap dancing though. Maybe it's your setup, but I would love to see a more seamless integration of the BluGuitar into a signal path. Probably just programming. Wendy (prince guitarist) uses it, so that's a great endorsement by itself. Interesting. Not sure it's worth it compared to the Hx Stomp or the GT1000 core.
I think that's just because John is borrowing it so doesn't want to put the effort in to integrating everything. Whether he programs something more when gigging it at the weekend I hope we find out in a future video
Interesting. He always made his amp sound bright an edgy, which though I liked, wasn't my thing at all. Seems to be capable of some girth though, on the clean channel.
Does the '80s' thing too, seems... if that is what you're after... at all...
If by that you mean Thomas then yes he does seem to favour quite bright edgy tones. But the EQ is very powerful and easy to smooth it out
I liked the record out better than your helix native cabs because theres a smoother high end. The helix is ice picky.
Agreed, the direct sound isn’t great. Usable, but could be better
So, in a practical sense, would you rather gig the Bluguitar amp, controller, HX effects, or simply an HX Stomp XL?
Had the mercury but the plastic spindles on the tiny pots on the side kept breaking. They sent free replacement spindles I guess…
Our manufacturer actually tried to improve it by using fiber glas enhanced knobs: these broke
Now we have the right materials and no issue anymore!
Greetings, Thomas Blug
@@BluGuitar great to hear this.. they were easy to change and the amp sounded great!
the original kemper killer before the ir d .
I love mine.... i would replace it if i had to if that says anything :)
Don’t know this unit but the record output probably doesn’t have speaker simulation that is why it sounds different??….
No IRs, just old fashioned tone circuit a bit like the old H&K red box
Is it the silver or mercury? I have first silver, they sey that mercury is better, i do not direct out i use it with speaker or two notes torpeedo cab
This is a mercury. Not really sure the mercury is better as such. There are a few features I think aren't available on silver - half power move, low gain mode? Can't remember if you can access them from the silver unit. The main difference is the voicing of the vintage channel. The original silver is voiced to Thomas's favourite JTM45 with a really worn out rectifier tube. It's looser and squishier. The mercury is more of a straight up plexi voice
The Silver Sounds a bit more „muddy“ like vintage amps with tube rectifier..(something I consider a vintage quality) …on Silver I use a touch less Gain compared to Mercury… my personal option. Greetings, Thomas Blug
@@BluGuitar Cheers Thomas!!
Companies have been selling us for twenty years digital gear that sound almost the same and we keep buying them
This is a completely analog device except for the reverb chip.
Analog AND tube ;)
Bruh, I've been eyeing g one of these & I was hoping to get a good deal on it. If I have a hard time haggling I've your playing to blame ;)
I bought it and literally decided to sell it the same day. Never liked it.
Mistake.
Then you don't ilke Marshall sound.
i am not a big fan either. but people really get mad if you say this.
i have a jc-120 from 1978ish. it sounds so beautiful in comparison. so open.
it's just a matter of taste.
i prefer gibson style guitars and the amp1 likes strats more i guess.
@@BigEdWothose JC amps have the BEST clean sound!
@@lifelongfan07 i think that's true.
Judging by the last 2 minutes of this video. I think you'll be saying goodbye to your amp modeler.
The recording out is useless and it is a design flaw that it is not defeatable - but with a BluBox it sounds killer to FOH.
You won’t get the best tone when using the cabinet out simultaneously with the recording out, just so you know. They tone suck each other (it’s even in the manual).
Rubbish
@@sambroxguitar I used it with the Blubox and it sounded great. I do think it sounds best with some kind of speaker sim
@@muttonjeff105 yeah the BluBox is great
As far as I remember Thomas always said the record-out (also the Blubox) sounds best with a speaker or reactive load attatched to the Speaker out. It's because the power amp reacts with the speaker which also makes the cabsim more realistic.
I’ve just looked at the manual and also the RUclips vid from 9 years ago that convinced me to buy an Amp1, and I can’t find any reference to the tone suck thing. I thought that was also the reason for the Blubox’s existence. Maybe it was the first iteration of the Amp1, and was corrected with the Mercury/metal editions…? Or maybe it’s the Mandela effect 😬 Whatever, I never use the headphone/recording out when the speaker’s attached.
Doesn't make sense to me unless it's super cheap, which is not.
I don't think it needs to be super cheap. It's a fair bit of kit that really does perform like a 4 channel 100 watt head. But I do think the current price is a bit too steep. I bought this one a few years ago for around £500 (can't remember the exact amount now) and felt that was reasonable at the time
@@tonystartup3817 right at that time makes sense, but not now with the options you have, unless you find a good deal, at least if you are looking for something similar.
@@dutelatte2154 I will say though, that I do use mine a lot at home for just playing around through a 1x12 cab. It's just so much easier often than using a traditional tube amp - don't feel like I'm worrying about leaving tubes running for hours at a time, don't have to worry about accident not adding a speaker load. Noise is low and it doesn't pick up loads of transformer hum when running at high gain like a normal amp, and then you really can dial in pretty much any tone you want from one of the four channels and the various EQ options. Only thing some of my amps really do better is that edge of breakup not quite clean thing
@@tonystartup3817 yes I understand, I was just saying that with today's options even buying it used it is quite expensive.
I use Amp1 ME for my main #majikband amp. I have played easily 50 live shows and used it extensively on our recent album ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_ks1GvKZrtK-DaLNxD3M8TBNmOlZJlZPNY&si=koBdOzuJvkfCRQg9
It beats out an extensive array of high end amps for me in the studio. It has never failed me. I run it 4CM with and hx effects and a crazy tube circuits space tube overdrive added to the front end for another gain stage and 12ax7 before the preamp. Really rear amp.
