Thank you so much! That really makes me happy to hear!
I’m following you for your charm and diplomatic honesty. These restaurants in general have very little soul. Thanks!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
I watch your videos before going to work in a kitchen with students, so thank you for your civilised outlook and decency.
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
Thanks James for visiting Frenchette.Looked delicious! Not really my cup of tea however I'm so glad you enjoyed your self. All you needed was Paris on your arm and Ouh la' la'!❤🗼
Haha! Yeah, that would've been perfect!
Thanks for always being honest and respectful in your reviews.
Thanks for watching! I always try to be.
I enjoy your reviews James -always classy, entertaining and even quite informative!
Thank you! That makes me happy to hear!
Always enjoy the history and of course looking at the cuisine. Everything about it seems incredible. Thanks James!
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it!
Dude - you have a fan in Australia - loving your vids. Thanks so much.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
I enjoy your videos very much James. There's great editing, charm and all the dishes look amazing.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
One of your best reviews yet. High profile place, great dish selection,....superb insight.
Thank you so much!
Hey James!
I'm really surprised you had never experienced Cassoulet - my all time favorite French dish - I've had so many incredible ones - some wonderful ones there in NYC - including unforgettable versions at Le Grenouille and the legendary La Cote Basque -
Also one of my most memorable meals anywhere was at a tiny basement bistro in Paris where every Tuesday night they serve Cassoulet and Cassoulet only.
It comes to the table in a huge ancient Dutch oven that looks like it dates from a grandmother's farm kitchen circa 1900 - I can still smell it's fragrant aroma and taste the depth and richness of the various meats it contained.
Remarkable.
And I know it cost nowhere near $54 - and the the loaf of fresh country bread was hefty, hot from the oven and free.
Nice! Those sound like some great experiences with cassoulets. I really enjoyed mine and hope to be able to try more in the future. It's such a comforting dish.
Thanks for sticking it out on the uncomfortable bench for the sake of the video. Everything looked great!! $11 for bread seems crazy. Restaurant Week sounds like so much fun!! Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for watching!
Im enjoying your videos. I’m glad you don’t mind admitting when you don’t have enough $$ to pay for certain things. And you admit freely when a bill seems way too much for many folks. But you’re honest. Thanks.
Thanks so much!!
super high quality content, you dont miss
keep up the good work
Thank you so much!
Great note re: seat which has big impact on dining experience. Thanks for your honest and insightful reviews!
Thanks for watching!
That dessert was the star of this video. At least it looked that way. Impressive sweets.
It was a fantastic dessert indeed!
Great video-As always! The dessert looked amazing!!
Thank you! It was a great dessert indeed!
Wow, just wow! What a wonderful meal on a cold day. Thank you for this review!
Thanks for watching! It definitely was a great meal!
I almost miss NYC watching your channel. Thanks for the great reviews.
Thank you for watching!
I've been craving French, this may have to be my spot to try next. Thanks for another great review!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, it's definitely a great spot for French food!
I sincerely luv your videos - very informative, visually beautiful and sooooo inspiring. Thank U
Thank you for watching! I'm happy that you enjoy them!
That charming, orangey glow of the restaurant really does make it look like you're in some sort of artsy movie.
Definitely! It was a vibe!
Always look forward to your latest video!
Thank you! That makes me happy to hear!
Wow! That Cassoulet looks incredibly rich and tasty!
Indeed! It was a rich, tasty, and satisfying dish!
Another fine episode, James ! The food looked good . Cassoulet is always a desirable choice on a French restaurant menu . Yes , they don't look after us guys dining alone . It's always a wobbly table , or an uncomfortable chair . When I was married , she didn't want to go out to restaurants . You just can't win ! I hope you get the chance to go to Paris one day and do a food review . You'll love it ! All the best !
Thank you so much! I've been to Paris a couple of times. It's one of my favorite cities! I hope to go there again and film some food reviews.
Great review as always! Wanted to go to Frenchette a few years ago but not lucky to get a table. Restaurant week it is! 😊
Thank you! Yeah, Restaurant Week is definitely a great time to visit the restaurant.
fantastic review as always, you deserve many more subscribers sir, have a wonderful week!
Thank you! I hope that you have a great week as well!
That dessert looks amazing!
It was really good! Very chocolaty!
I LOVE Cassoulet ! Before you were born likely( the 80s) there was Quatorze! On 14th street of course , excellent bread, country salad , Cassoulet and an amazing Apple tarte tarte! Always chic , perfect and unlike today, not a fortune.
or dessert.
That sounds like a restaurant that I would've really enjoyed dining at.
I always find it odd when restaurants sort of ignore the solo diner. They tend to eat more (no one to share with and no one to judge lol) and tip well, at least I do. Everybody paying deserves the same service. I’m glad you enjoyed the food. Curious as to what you think about natural wine.
I regret not getting any wine especially since their wine list is so unique. Next time though!
Oh my, I tell ya that cassoulet and mousse look wonderful, very glad you enjoyed it 👍😋
Thank you! It was great food indeed!
Wow ! The portion sizes were amazing.
Yeah, they were pretty fair for the price.
Nice new background track James. That place looks fantastic. We have nothing like that in Hawaii. The pleasant climate will have to suffice.
Thank you! Yeah, I was pretty happy with the music with this one.
Looked really good man…good job buddy
Thank you so much! It was definitely a great lunch!
I love Frenchette! Those look like very generous portions for Restaurant Week too
Indeed! They were definitely larger portions than other fine dining restaurants participating in Restaurant Week.
Everything looked DELICIOUS!
Enjoy your videos.
Safe Journey!
Yellowbird Blue Agave Sriracha!!!
Thank you! It was delicious food indeed!
Casssoulet is one of those dishes that is hard to get right. It looked amazing. We have something similar to restaurant week here in Toronto and it's such a joy.
Nice! Yeah, cassoulets seem like quite the challenge to make. I'm glad that I was at least able to try a good version.
Good portion sizes. Looks amazing
It was really good!
Nice video. Wise move taking advantage of going to Frenchette during restaurant week. I like the duck that you selected, would have been my first choice too.
Thank you! Indeed, it was a solid place for restaurant week!
Thank you sir. I love playing a game where I try to guess what you are having off of the menu. (I won't be returning for Champion's week) A properly confit or roasted duck is always a great change to the standard "merican choices but I'm not sure about mixing it with lamb? Lamb, like goat, is something I prefer not to near while it is cooking. Thank you for sharing an honest detailed vlog of your experience.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I really enjoy duck and I tend to gravitate towards it when it's listed on a menu.
Excellent review James! It's ironic that you lucked out with the duck cassoulet (duck meat, beans and a pork sausage). It is such a mainstay of French cuisine to the extent that the French military has a version of duck cassoulet in their MRE/military rations (canned). Glad you enjoyed the fresh version!!
Thank you! That's really interesting! I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing!
Great clip. I have never been, but plan on checking it out. Thanks 🎉
Thanks for watching! I hope that you enjoy it!
Oh I would have loved to try that cassoulet! Nice portions and a good deal for restaurant week. The mousse looked luscious. Ridiculous to charge extra for bread though and bad form to not see the waitress except at ordering and check time. I would definitely have appreciated hearing your opinion of the mousse while you were drinking the house coffee.
It was definitely a great deal! Yeah, that chocolate mousse was begging for a cup of coffee, but it was still a nice treat regardless.
Thank you ~ For the content 🥃🏌🏽♂️
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
This restaurant gets bonus points for having tarte tropezienne on the menu. So delicious but I never see it in America! Although no free bread should be illegal in a French restaurant.
Indeed! I was really debating on whether to get the tarte or the mousse. They both were tempting.
Had a memorable meal there several years ago. I still think about their Pistachio Paris-Brest - top 10 dessert all-time.
Nice! Yeah, I've seen pictures of that dessert and it looks incredible!
I absolutely hate fluorescent lighting and the way it looks, not to mention how it makes me look, lol, what on earth gave them the idea it was chic. Nice cassoulet, I don't know what the green was on there, but thyme some bay leaf and a gentle addition of some nutmeg would have added just a bit more flavor. The mousse looked rich and tasty.
Thank you for taking us along.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, fluorescent lighting can make things look pretty strange. Indeed, that probably would've helped the dish, but all the food was still great nonetheless.
An honest review. I’m guessing that when you are talking outside into the camera, you are using a stick to hold the camera…your background is torquing back and forth.
Thank you! Yep, I'm holding my camera with a small sort of tripod. It was a bit windy that day, making it a challenge to hold it steady.
Do you use a gimbal? Though I’m not sure how well gimbals work in windy conditions.
Great per usual
Thank you so much!
James Great video per usual. Just one comment - As mom would say, "Keep your elbows off the table!"
Haha! Thank you!
Most French restaurants are not cheap. The background in there looked basic but something that you would find in the Left Bank in Paris. I was wondering too if they gave you that table anyway because people in the past have complained about it too. That seat cushion.
Indeed! There's a lot of costly French restaurants out there, but this one seemed a bit higher in price than average.
I don't see the French classics on their menu (coq au vin, bouillabaisse, escargot), but upon closer examination they're all transformed and hidden under new names (soupe poisson, brouillade, poulet rotl). Will have to go there after Met Opera next week.
It's definitely a restaurant worth checking out. They really know what they're doing when it comes to food.
No matter how u slice it restaurants should not charge extra for bread! Unless like u said it was a specialty bread that was well worth it but I guess I am too frugal lol I think it should b complimentary. Idk they have even hiked up the tip percentage starting at 15% to 20% with out my vote on the matter! In Europe and Asia the restaurant owner is the one that pays their servers a good salary so they don't need tips. I think that's something we should adopt here in the U.S. since the prices of everything has gotten out of hand! lol sorry u had a pain in the crack lol otherwise great video and the duck looked scrumptious!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I know what you mean, especially considering that bread is such an important part of a French meal.
One of my favorite restaurants in the city. I love to go and sit at the bar and eat the Duck Frites and Oysters!
Yeah, their duck frites dish is definitely one that I've got to try in the future.
Well done, James. That dessert looked like it would give a dead man Diabetes, lol. Stay safe and keep up the great work.
Haha! Thank you!
Love your videos but the music chosen might not have been the best accompaniment. That cassoulet looked stellar, but I really coveted that chocolate mousse even more! As a child, I once ordered a chocolate mousse at Brennans and wanted more, so they wound up bringing me a total of five more. ;)
Haha! That's a great memory! Indeed, that chocolate mousse was delicious!
$11 for bread is an automatic no go place for me. Everything looked good, but in this day and age charging for bread is straight up gouging IMO. Cheers James
Thank you! Yeah, $11 is a bit much, and visually, it's not the most exciting looking bread. At least, I did enjoy the food I had, and there are definitely other appetizing options on their menu.
@@NoahEats Haha!
@@Jamesnuok that explains the no carbs, that’s absurd
Another fine YT vid so thanks much James. Do you think you could have had a better seat at the bar? Just curious! Ciao.
Thank you! Yeah, I bet the bar would've been pretty nice. Plus, it didn't look too crowded when I left.
Yum!
Yum indeed!
If your server wax French, that explains everything. I ran French restaurants in London. That’s just the French style of service. If she was American, then it really wasn’t proper service. I enjoyed the review again by the way. Hopefully you had a great marathon in Nashville.
Thank you! Yeah, the marathon was fun. I'll showcase a bit of it in an upcoming video.
I love that cassoulet. You mentioned wanting more spice...do you think it needed some type of acid to brighten it up? Maybe a dash of vinegar?
It's a great dish for sure. Maybe vinegar would've worked. It just needed something more to give it a bit of pop.
For several years, I made a large Cassoulet (Julia Child's recipe) for the annual Super Bowl party. We ususally enjoyed the game, too.
Nice! It seems like a time-consuming dish to make.
@@Jamesnu2-3 days.
@@jg90049 That takes some dedication!
@@JamesnuI love cooking.
Now you know why that table was available! I think you were pretty generous considering the seat, and the negligent service and the obstructed view.
Haha! Yeah, maybe.
Hi James if u get to ashtabula ohio i highly recommend u try lakeway restruants here food is off the chart
I appreciate the recommendation! Thank you!
Great choice in the Cassoulet. I regret never trying that dish when I used to eat at the old Les Halles (Bourdain) on Park Ave back in day. Also a smart choice with the bread, that's just crazy stupid at $11.
Thank you! I wish I had the chance to go to Les Halles. Yeah, $11 is a lot for bread.
James: being an affionato of cassoulet their version looks great with the lamb! Yes, that Restaurant Week $60 deal was outstanding! $11 for bread, no way! I'm not a fool! In Miami, we also have a restaurant week which gives you a chance to try some spots you would not normally try! As a side comment, in France most restaurants offer a set menu for lunch & dinner, usually 2-4 courses at a good price! Unfortunately most French restaurants in the USA do not offer this type of set menu! Any thoughts? It seems that off-the-menu at Frenchette a three course meal, without wine, tip or tax, is $100+😊
Indeed! That was a great cassoulet! Yeah, I do like a good prix fixe menu and I loved going out to restaurants during my multiple visits to France. I'm glad a number of cities have Restaurant Weeks as it does make certain restaurants more affordable. Because like I said in the video, it was normally a pretty costly place.
Excellent review, and the RW lunch seems like good value. Otherwise the prices are way too high for my pocket.
Thank you! I know what you mean, it's a costly place, but the restaurant week menu was definitely worth it.
casoulet is the best. yours looked amazing
It was really good!
This was a great show. I think you’re being too nice about the service only coming twice the whole time. It would have been great to have some French pressed coffee afterwards.
Thank you! Yeah, if I did have a problem or needed something, then I probably would've been more upset with the service.
Interesting you mentioned that your main course was served “piping hot”. In the last few years, my wife and i find that even the best restaurants serve so many meals that come out luke warm or cold. While we dont want to be complainers, we have become more assertive at sending such meals back, especially if michelin star or just expensive.
I know what you mean. To me, food just has to be served at the right temperature, especially in fine dining establishments.
bro emotes after every bite
Those were good bites!
I know why the waitress didn't check in on you, it's because you went as part of a restaurant deal, and she wasn't going to make a larger tip.
Preposterous remark.
Nah. It’s definitely a possibility.
I would have gone for the same dish you did, the Cassoulet
Nice! It was a great dish for sure!
Also have you done Heidelberg's or Rolfs in Manhattan? Two German restaurants.
I haven't been to those places yet, but I'll keep them in mind. I've got a long list of restaurants to try.
The soup and the mousse did look amazing. You must be at least at times recognized when you enter some of these establishments, how does it affect your experience?
Those were great dishes indeed! Yeah, I'm starting to get recognized occasionally now, but it really hasn't changed things in terms of my overall experience.
A little pricy for lunch, but the portion size looked great. Wouldn’t mind coming there for dinner.
Yeah, unlike a lot of fine dining restaurants, the portions were actually pretty fair.
Please, you should get into wine. It’s such a delightful and important addition to food. It’s culture!
I love wine, but sometimes I skip it to save money. I care far more for food.
The bread is amazing, definitely worth $11.
That's good to hear!
That’s how the French wait staff works. If you need something you call for them. They leave you alone and assume the food is good. I like it. I don’t like being bothered by a server.
I know what you mean and sometimes I think servers can intrude too often during a meal, but I still think that I should've seen my server at least a little more.
Super
Thank you!
They didn't offer bread with that cassoulet?
Sadly no. I can imagine that it would've been nice to scoop up the sauce with the bread.
I dont think it can be best french cuz such a small menu. And the price is pretty good for french especially a three course. By the way did you order from prixe fix menu?
Yep, I got the prix fixe, which was definitely good value.
Good review, but you gave a 20% tip for sub par service?
Thank you! It wasn't bad service exactly, because all my food was at least delivered to my table pretty quickly.
Do you have anymore videos from Nashville?
Yep, there will be one not next week, but the week after.
Liked 👍 @ 501
❤ from Savannah Georgia 😋
Thank you so much!
If they do not GIVE you bread, it should not be called a French restaurant. There is not one French restaurant in France that does not offer its customers bread.
I know what you mean. Bread is such an integral part of a French meal.
A French restaurant is so much more than a building where they serve French food! Very often French restaurants in the US serve great (QUITE GENUINE) French food but the French charm and "savoire faire" is are greatly lacking...unfortunately.@@Jamesnu
Get the wine! It completes a review.
I should've. Especially since the restaurant has such a unique wine program.
Nickel and diming on the bread is unfortunate. But it looks like a good spot 🎉
It was definitely a good spot! I just probably won't be getting the bread there.
Delicous
It was definitely a delicious meal!
I actually couldn't pronounce half the dishes on that menu...very very rich dishes. indeed lol.
Haha! Indeed!
Great review I love there kidneys I don't love the reservation policy I have to go down to get a seat sucks but I can get a bar area for dinner . Love restaurant week but can only do dinner.
Thank you! Yeah, I wish they did a dinner menu for Restaurant Week. Their dinner menu definitely has some unique plates.
@Jamesnu I went to Mischa for Lunch yesterday for bday with 2 friends and loved hotdog then to Dinner at Saga by myself cos it's 7 courses at $300 and it's great . You should do a video on it . I'd send pics to you but have no way to . I don't do social media
@@RR-fg2rl Fantastic and happy birthday! That makes me happy to hear! Yeah, I'll definitely do a video at Saga in the future.
@Jamesnu Had a fantastic time at Lore and Raos . Got a pic with Jay the chef and said I'm a fan of yours. Went to plaza hotel with 2 gf and a baby for bfast at 9:30 . The website and phone recording day bfast before 10 no reservations for non hotel guest at bfast first come first serve. They wouldn’t seat me .had to get afternoon tea which girls didn't want it cost $456 I made a email complaint to mgr at plaza for refund I'll see what happens
@@RR-fg2rl That makes me happy to hear that you had a good time at Lore and Raos! That's unfortunate about the Plaza. I hope you get that refund.
is James going no carbs? the deco to me definitely isn’t bistro, it feels almost like german beer hall or schoolroom
No carbs in this one, but the video I'm posting next week is almost all carbs, so it makes up for it.
$54 is a bit much with lazy service.....Coos Bay, Oregon
How could you not figure out that the sparse waiter presence was part of the restaurant's simulation of French style? Countries outside of the United States do not have overbearing waiters that check on you all of the time.
That may be true, but the restaurant is still in NYC and it seemed that she checked on other diners, but not myself.
Some very good observations. (I often think you are "holding back" in your reviews out of a sense of politeness!)
Thank you! I definitely voice my opinions, but I try not to be unnecessarily mean.
65 bucks for a 3 course lunch including a duck and veal cassoulet? That's basically free lol
Haha! Yeah, it was definitely a good deal!
Amazing value. Except the pain in the ass. Another great review.
Haha! Thank you!
I am licking my phone. Looks like a Restaurant Week bargain.
It was definitely a good deal!
Frenchette is an excellent brasserie..
the best bistro in NYC is
La Ripaille 😉
That's definitely one I've still got to check out.
Didn't you over tipped!? Considering she never checked how's your meal or if you need a drink or not?
I get where you're coming from. It wasn't bad service, but it wasn't anything special, so I just gave the standard 20 percent.
