The big record companies are scrambling and going the way of the 8 track tape... sign yourself, make your own deal and keep full artistic control release what you want, when you want and how you want. The point of the whole thing is having fun expressing yourself as well as learning and sharing your experience with all of us. Cheers!
Punkedge the money today is in touring and merchandise. Play every gig possible, build a fan base, get on youtube, tweet, make fans love you and you will make money. People buy music they know about, find every possible way for them to learn about. A fan base is built 1 fan at a time. But, remember the cream always floats to the top. Be the cream.
go indi. if you're good then the people will think so too. do some local gigs, go get a small following. then branch out a bit and do the surrounding suberbs. your friends will tell thier friends etc. then do the surrounding towns. then the cities. repeat. then repeat again. sell your cd's at the door at every show. and if you get air play on the radio, go and get some advertising going too. be prepared to work for it. and be prepared to work even harder to keep it.
lot of people are selling their music without a producer making it "commercial", without radio or TV plays. so if a record company doesn't release a record it only means they don't know ANYTHING about marketing.
*continues* With all that being said, if artists want to afford the neccasary equipment to perform a concert---the only way is through ADVETISEMENT (t-shirts, online store, etc.). Take the advice from one who actually DOES the research on the (corrupted) entertainment industry.
Im late to this round table 2 way discussion..But here goes..Music BUSINESS IS LIKE INVESTMENT BANKING...LOAN YOU GET IS REALLY ADVANCE YOU GET AND MUST BE RECOUPED AND PAID BACK.. PERIOD....BANKING A INTEREST RATE A MUST. IN MBUS A ROYALTY RATE NEED TO KNOW. RELEASE COMMITMENT LIKE A CLOSING ON THE DEAL..MKTG CRUCIAL A BUDGET.. U CAN SELL A 1,000,000 units @ $10.00 $10,000,000.00 made and still owe the the label $500,000 as an artist or band...Just example Bank a Charter Fed or State.. Music Corp gets neither but run as a bank.. hope makes sense. Sidebar...Try this take a. Album go get a can of Silver Metallic paint. spray that album Silver back and front Bam you have a Platinum Record 1,000,000 units sold. HANG IT ON YOUR WALL.. Go get Gold paint do same thing spray paint both sides Gold Bam u got a Gold Record 500,000 units sold same with your CD's and cassettes...Music Business has always been about BS making money yeah right. THE SHAREHOLDERS THE CORP THE STAKEHOLDERS THE LAWYERS ACCTS ETC. F THE SOLD CALLED ARTISTS . I'm out Jb
A recording on CD is a record! Anything in writing or type is a record. There's lots of records. Not all, by far, are on CD. Vinyl is not a record unless information is imposed on it. I'll always call music CDs records, because that is what they are.
Still not seeing the big picture huh? Most live concerts are benefited through both nonprofit organizations & small businesses. The city (where the concert is held) even pays for the revenue of the fans (but at a small percentage). True, all celebrities need bodyguards as well as a group who will pay thier instrumnets. The drums, bass, etc. go on the tour with the artist, but Labels don't provide the revenue. No doubt it will ALWAYS cost more for an average to invest *continues*
This is BS. As soon as she said she works for both record companies and artists, she lost all credibility. It's very interesting the record companies were highly profitable back when the company didn't interfere with the artist. That's why big corporations bought them up in the first place. Now that the lawyers and accountants run the business, all they do is find different and better ways to rip off the artists instead of putting out a product people want. It's a bad business model.
360!killed all this gold, even the Indy very-much FOOLs gold(!!) or should I say platinum. You should updat e this I'd Love to here the revisions in the world of Drakes, Minaj, Tune, Ross, Meek, 2 Chainz & of course Keef, big SEAN, Justin ect
LOL Who would want to get a record deal when the Labels don't pay you dime? Screw what this video says! If I wanted to get rich just for making music, I'd make concerts & create an investment on advertising merchandise (which doesn't involve music). Yup. I'm going to financial heaven!
This is so confusing. THere are experts like her who say forget royalties, go for advances. Then some other expert says don't sign away royalty rights cause you'll never see a dime. All of the sound very convincing. What are we supposed to do?!?!?!?!?!?!
This message is for all Indie Recording Artists & Engineers: I am not promoting myself or any band! Join the crusade to deal with the current reality, Many great Indies are not making much money from selling legal downloads. This animated superhero is spreading the message and enlightening music lovers everywhere about what it takes to create quality sounds. Why not get some fundage directly to your fave artists? HELP KEEP GREAT MUSIC ALIVE! Support Indie music! Watch HOMERECORDINGMAN!
I think your missing the point. Many of these artists have to charge those upfront costs cause the "middle man" (aka labels, RIAA, etc.) uses that money to create lawsuits on those who "pirate" music. If artists didn't have to pay royalties to labels, the price of a concert ticket would be much cheaper (alot cheaper).
I rap, sing, play instruments, produce, mix, arrange/compose, and songwrite...but that still doesnt guarantee success. Study the industry and its public examples of protocol. Assume you have to sell records yourself with no help. If you can, study about art/photography, in case you have to market yourself. Your music should be good enough to not only sell, but stand behind it with confidence. Network, be known everywhere and anywhere. Pay your dues and work hard showin people what you got. WORD.
Hi. 🙂 Please, let us pray together. Dear God who art in heaven hallow be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus Christ's name we pray amen.
music managers should stick to busines, and not music.ppl who made it in the industry r those who were managed by those who had no ear for music.or so i heard..i mean, how could some1 else decide what sells?obviously he's gonna say that it will sell only if it sounds like evrythng else that sells @that particular moment.and we know that biggest sales came from somthn completly diferent that the current market.so its definitely a money gambler's game.not a musician trage bussinesman's...my opinion.

Big record labels are still okay. But it depends what works and what doesn’t
