This video was immensely helpful. I have a query I do all higher level subject in my school ( in 5 th year btw) but I only choose 2 sciences bio and chem I didn't choose phy just took higher level math would you say it would affect my entry in medical school because I didn't choose all 3 sciences ?

Or they're for people who just happen to have degrees. People who have actual adult life experience and want to change careers. Those people have MORE education than you so calling them "lesser" makes no sense, and you're just outing yourself as a nasty small-minded person looking to bully others for literally no reason.
I’m pretty sure gem is geared towards international people who in their systems can’t start right after hs and maybe tried to start in their home countries. I’ll give an example: the United States. Rn things are in a mess if you want to be a doctor. Essentially it’s a nepotism pathway or if you are white or Asian, bc of the current landscape of DEI initiatives, and if you don’t have a parent in medicine, unfortunately you’re not gonna get in. You’re expected to have an mcat of 519+ (near impossible score in the 100th percentile) and a gpa of 3.9+ (and if you go to a stem school like Cornell, you probs won’t have something like this given the avg gpa of most stem grads at stem schools is around a 2.9… so for a good and proper stem education, you’ve screwed yourself). And remember the US system requires you to have a bachelors before you pursue medicine. Now I just shared the stats for white and Asian non nepo baby applicants. For everyone else, the gpa is around a 3.6 and the mcat around a 510. The barrier of entry:it’s unfair. The reality is that Asian (this includes Indians. And I mean all these folks are American citizens bc non-citizens can’t really apply to American medical schools) and white applicants have an awful barrier of entry placed before them. Basically being punished for not being the right color or having the right connections. And while in countries like India, where DEI initiatives have similarly resulted in upper caste kids having minimal seats in public medical college (they’re basically barred bc of what their ancestors did. Messed up imho and teaches hate), in recent years, private medical colleges were built to at least let some folks rejected bc of bs become doctors in their home country if they’re qualified. Yes. Money becomes the barrier there. But in the US you have the MD system and the DO system. When you apply being white or Asian, you’ll be recommended to apply DO and told it’s better than going abroad and other bs. Tbh: it’s not. I’ll share why: you spend a ton of extra time learning a pseudoscience called OMM. You take an additional exam. And there is a nepo baby part of DO schools: they require a letter of recommendation from a physician. Which isn’t easy to obtain and what I consider worse: physicians in the US are a cliquey network. I’ve heard of kids being denied the letter simply bc they didn’t have a parent in medicine already. Additionally DO schools are more expensive than MD and international schools, and currently have a falling match rate. You’re basically stuck only going into primary care (even though you are in the US), you will be constantly belittled for not being an MD. Also they now have a falling match rate… which Jesus fricken Christ. DO schools are opening like crazy in the states, with little regard to the standard of education and thus many have attrition rates similar to the Caribbean. And remember- every year you take a bunch of additional exams compared to your US and IMG peers leaving DOs often more burnt out than MDs. So that brings me to GEM and US grads. Ireland has these spots for a lot of IMGs and it’s HELLA competitive. But they recruit the cream of the crop from the US and Canada that are often being rejected for the BS I have described. They give deserving and brilliant folks a chance that their own home countries have been stupid enough not to do. While match back to the states may be tough, it happens as long as you’re willing to work hard. You can also ofc match to other countries for residency but my point: you have a chance to be an amazing doc in whatever field you choose (as long as it isn’t crazy over competitive… although it has been done!). I wish Irish schools would also allow some internationals to stay and practice in Ireland bc I know a lot of peers who have studied there who would rather give back to the nation that gave them a chance to live their dreams. And maybe there’s a way that I haven’t a clue about. But yeah. Gem is really really for people internationally locked out of medicine bc of nepotism and bs DEI standards. It’s why also most people joining rcsi from the international pool (if they’re from the US especially) are white and Asian. Like I said: absolutely broken system that’s going to result in a lot of hate in a few years. And it’s already leading to terrible outcomes in the medical field. Lots of unqualified docs with no bedside manner, unable to provide a simple diagnosis to a patient. Rather sad imho.

There is an advantage to doing 3 sciences, afaik, when applying to the 5-year programme in NUIG. That’s the only advantage I know of.
