    Thank you so much for such a candid and lucid presentation of how you applied to medical school, particularly your discussion of how your musical background biased medical schools against your application. In my opinion, medical schools should consider more people like you. Being a good musician is just as important and useful as a scientific background for medical school. Taking good care of people and innovating in medicine takes much more than science. I received a BA from Reed College in biology and chemistry, a PhD in physiology and biophysics from the University of Iowa, and an MD from Stanford University. I did it in a hurry, taking about 3 years for each degree. If I had to do it over again, I probably would have taken more time for each, to learn more than science, to be a better doctor and scientist. You sing beautifully and I imagine your choice between medicine and music to have been difficult. Thank you for going to medical school. You will be a wonderful doctor.

      Lila, wouldn’t it be nice to have several lifetimes? Perhaps you should parlay your interest in quantum biology to make several life times possible. I think Tara hit the nail of the head when she described the struggles she had convincing medical schools to accept her. I think that many of the medical schools had a hard time imagining a physician-musician. When I was becoming a physician-scientist in the 1970’s, many people did not think such a career was possible. Yes, I think that it is possible but you have to work hard and be creative. I think that each will make you better. Wise.

    • @WISEYOUN
      @WISEYOUN 3 года назад

      Tara, while re-reading my answer to you, I realized that I may have mistakenly implied that you should just be a physician. I actually meant that you will be a better doctor and a better musician if you did both. Wise.

    For viewers watching this who may be considering this path to becoming a physician, it might be worth knowing the cost, generally speaking, of doing medical school abroad. I went to med school in Canada where it is (or was) fairly affordable; I may be mistaken (and please correct me if I am) but I believe the overseas option may be prohibitively expensive for many.
    Despite your discouragement with the Canadian system, it sounds like you only applied the one time, whereas it's not uncommon for applicants to apply several times, as I did, before even being offered an interview. Also, many students in my med school came from arts backgrounds, like yours (mine was in Fine Arts) - far from being a disadvantage, I'd say it provides a bonus when writing a personal statement that stands out from the rest; it also makes for a more interesting interview. I mention this different perspective so others watching with arts backgrounds won't feel that it's hopeless for them to apply! Respectfully, it sounds like you were perhaps anxious to get into a med school right away, when - given the solid MCAT scores you mention elsewhere, and your interesting background - you probably did stand a reasonable chance of admission in a subsequent year.
    Also - I'm not sure if this is true of the schools in Ireland, but some of the other international med schools are known for failing large numbers of their students, which of course would be devastating (and very important to know before going "all-in")! Meanwhile, in Canada, it's fairly hard to get kicked-out once you're in! Lastly, there's no guarantee that an overseas graduate will gain entry back into Canada to work (though I believe Ireland grads have better success than those in other overseas programs). Best of luck with your studies - it sounds like you're enjoying the experience, and have found a nice balance between medicine and music!

      Hi J Rae, Thanks for writing and making extremely good points about the difference between med school experiences in Canada vs. Abroad.
      In my video I am not trying to discourage people from applying in Canada or saying that it is hopeless to be accepted to medical school in Canada, I am just outlining my experiences through the application process. In fact, I do believe I mention that if you have the opportunity to attend medical school in Canada - that it should be your first choice.
      Yes, going to medical school abroad is extremely expensive in comparison to the cost of attending in Canada. This is something that I did not talk about in this video, but I do plan on making a video this year about the pros and cons of going to med school abroad - and this will be a main discussion point. This video was more about how I got into med school abroad and why I chose Ireland vs other countries.
      I did only apply in Canada once - and I did plan on applying again the following year (and doing things to bolster my application such as extra classes and additional volunteering/work beyond my current experience); however, this was before I knew about Ireland as an option. When I knew Ireland was an option (even though it would be a costly option), I decided I would see if I got in there before I applied in Canada a second time so that I was familiar with the process and could take a closer look at some of the schools. Many Canadian students in my class did apply in Canada multiple times, including taking on additional degrees, and still were unable to gain entry in Canada. I have heard of arts students (students studying music/fine art) gaining entry to schools in Canada - but I still felt that I was at a huge disadvantage (just looking at the numeric data from the various medical schools), and when the opportunity came to go to school in Ireland I decided to take it (which was my own personal choice, and there were a couple other factors that promoted that choice).
      I have heard of some international medical schools failing large numbers of students; however, this has not been a problem at my institution in Ireland (I can't speak for schools I haven't attended). I know some schools in Eastern Europe follow a model where they only let a certain percentage of students from year 1 pass to year 2, year 2 to year 3, etc. but that model is not employed in Ireland.
      You are also correct in saying that it is much more difficult for students to gain a residency in Canada, and if they obtain residency many IMGs take part in return of service agreements. This is something that everyone in my class was familiar with before we started school in Ireland - the school even brings it up in the interview to ensure that students understand the process of getting back and have plans in place to do so. Also, many Canadian students (including myself) also consider the US and take the USMLE (which I will sit this August).
      All in all, I think that students who have the opportunity to attend Canadian medical schools should! I just was trying to talk about my experience, and how I applied to Ireland.
      Thanks for writing - I really enjoy having these kinds of conversations and I would love to hear more about your experience with Canadian med school (how the process was for you, what you plan to specialize in/what you specialized in)!
      -T

      @@DrTaraJamieson Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I respect that you can't address everything in one video (without it being the longest video ever!) and I appreciate how openly you consider things. If would be illuminating to do a video at some point on the pros and cons of Canada v, Ireland v. say, a Caribbean school, perhaps even a live Q & A with 3 different perspectives!
      My experience was indeed different - and not without costs; just different ones from yours. I was not the most competitive applicant, but I also applied 6 times (SIX!) and I was very strategic about it; I was slowly upgrading, taking philosophy courses I knew I could smoke to raise my GPA. Eventually it worked, though it took time. But it wasn't like those 6 years applying weren't also great years! That is, it wasn't just about the goal. In any case, the comments section definitely shows the interest people,e have in the process!
      Oh, I did a family med residency, also at Mac. My goal was to work part-time and write part-time. I now have a wonderful, slightly unusual practice; I do MD psychotherapy, and also work with chronically ill patients on improving quality of life. I have a relaxed schedule and my dog comes with me every day. I live in the country on a big farm property and feel glad to not be in Toronto!
      I'll look forward to watching (and reading) future vids. Continued good luck on your adventure. Cheers!

    • @PHILLYMEDIC69
      @PHILLYMEDIC69 Год назад

      One extremely important stressor that you're not addressing is time. Nobody wants to kick around and wait more than half a decade before admission especially when medicine is a career that is known to consume all of the years in your 20s - that being said, who would want their careers to consume their 20s + their 30s? Also, there isn't concrete evidence that a diverse major is an inherent advantage - if we're talking the truth here, the thing that will increase your chances are high stats (i.e., the holy trifecta that is CASPER, MCAT and GPA - where you REQUIRED to score high on ALL OF THEM). And to your point about ' no guarantee entry back into Canada" isn't specific to IMGs as there are instances where Canadian students at Canadian medical students fail to land a spot for residency in Canada. Keeping this mind, I believe it's important to understand that as individuals, we all have different needs and put more weight on certain stressors than others (e.g., money vs. time).

  • @friscomorsegmail
    @friscomorsegmail 3 года назад

    I could not edit my original post. There are clear differences in the type of applicants US vs Canadian medical schools seek. US medical schools differ even there. Many schools seek the highest GPA and MCAT score possible. Others will accept older applicants and those with varied life experiences. They tend to be the ones not so research focused. Again congratulations on your acceptance and I hope your studies are progressing well.

    Hey Tara, can you talk a little bit about how you went about preparing for the MCAT? My understanding is that in your undergrad degree you didn't take any science courses at all -- is that correct? If so, I find it impressive that you were able to prepare yourself for the MCAT without having taking classes in chem/bio/etc and am wondering how you did it. As I'm sure you know, in the US, most students who take the MCAT take science courses in college as "pre-meds", even if their undergrad degree is in something else (say, philosophy or history). And if they didn't take those courses, they usually go into post-baccalaurate programs first before taking the MCAT. So if you didn't do any of this and still managed to prepare for the MCAT, I think that is so impressive! And I would love to hear more about how you did it.

    • @DrTaraJamieson
      @DrTaraJamieson  4 года назад +3

      So I only interviewed for RCSI, so I can only speak to my experience in that interview (I did a more extensive post over on my instagram if you want to check it out instagram.com/tarajamiesonmusic ). But, I found the interview I had to be very conversational - and based very heavily on my personal statement (I don't know if this would be the same for UCD and Limerick). One thing that may be similar between the schools - is that they asked why I wanted to go into medicine, why I wanted to study in Ireland, what I knew about the school - think of your standard interview questions. I think the biggest piece of advice I can give you is to show up prepared (know your personal statement, know the school you are applying to, practice your answers to the more standard questions), and to be yourself!

    • @DrTaraJamieson
      @DrTaraJamieson  3 года назад

      The degree we get is MB BCh BAO - which is a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Obstetrics. It is equivalent to a North American MD and is accepted as such in North America - in Ireland an MD is an advanced degree in medicine (seen as similar/same vein as a PhD) and is a research based degree. RCSI also maintains accreditation with the US and Canadian match systems.

    I only ‘finished’ my application in February and my MCAT was scheduled for March 27th but now due to COVID-19 I’ve had to reschedule for April 24th (and that could be cancelled too...). I’m pretty worried that it’s gonna be too late considering the schools do rolling admission :( Atlantic Bridge says applicants can get conditional offers pending their MCAT score; I’m wondering if you know anything about that? Because it’s now late March and I’ve had no correspondence from schools😅

    • @DrTaraJamieson
      @DrTaraJamieson  4 года назад +1

      JKarstadt I don’t know a ton about how schools are coping with applications during these unprecedented conditions. It seems reasonable that schools may be more lenient with the receipt of MCAT scores during this time because of the ongoing closures of testing centers - but unfortunately I don’t know. If you wanted more information about how RCSI is handling this specifically I would reach out to admissions@rcsi.com. It may take them a little longer to respond because everyone is working from home. Otherwise contacting Atlantic bridge may be your best option.

      This is true, you don't have to do the MCAT for the 5-year program. You do have to do the MCAT for the 4-year program, which is the program I am in. Also, if you are not Irish and you have completed a bachelors degree RCSI requires that you apply to the 4-year program. If you have not yet completed your bachelors RCSI allows you to apply to the 5-year program.

    • @DrTaraJamieson

      Ireland does allow North American students to apply for intern year positions - we just aren’t guaranteed positions (the Irish students are guaranteed positions after graduation). Many students choose to apply to intern year and then apply to Canada/USA after. Students do match back to Canada every year. Things were more difficult for students last year due to COVID. Canada has fewer positions available in the US so more students match to the US every year than to Canada.

    • @DrTaraJamieson

      Yes you do not have to have an MCAT score to apply to the 5 year program - however RCSI requires students who have completed a previous degree to only apply to the graduate program (and the MCAT is required to apply for the GEM program).

      Hi Tasnim, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my above comment ("you do not have to have an MCAT score to apply to the 5 year program" is what I wrote in the above comment).
      Here's something that may help:
      5 Year Program - you haven't completed a bachelors degree (you could have done a couple years of university or be coming from high school) and you DON'T need to take the MCAT
      4 Year Program (Graduate Entry Medicine) - you've completed a bachelors degree (+/- other degrees like a masters/or PhD) and you MUST take the MCAT/GAMSAT (GAMSAT is the european MCAT)
      Does that clear everything up?
      (this is also specific to RCSI - check out www.atlanticbridge.com for info about other schools)

    It is not true for US medical schools that you need a pure science degree. You can have any degree as long as the prerequisite classes have been taken

    • @DrTaraJamieson
      @DrTaraJamieson  4 года назад

      I don't believe I was referring to US medical schools in this video (please correct me if I am wrong or if I wasn't clear in my video) - I was referring mostly to my experience applying in Canada, where you can be limited on where you apply based on the type of undergraduate degree you have. Yes, there are many schools in the US that I could have applied to had I taken extra classes to make sure I had the correct prerequisites; however, I didn't really consider applying to med school in the US because of my personal circumstances.

    • @stefanodicenso2260
      @stefanodicenso2260 4 года назад

      Tara Jamieson thanks for your response. I believe it is the same for schools in Canada. Looking up the prerequisites for University of Toronto, it said the Batchelor’s degree could be in anything as long as the correct classes were also taken.

    • @DrTaraJamieson
      @DrTaraJamieson  4 года назад +1

      Stefano DiCenso yes. So I applied to all of the Canadian medical schools that would accept my degree as it was, took the MCAT, and had a plan to reapply (after taking additional courses) if I wasn’t successful so that I could increase the number of schools that I could apply to. I had a lot of sleepless nights, and lots of weighing out of what I did was going to be right. I also decided that applying abroad was a good idea given how notoriously difficult it is to get in to Canadian medical school, even if you have done everything right. I didn’t anticipate getting in to medical school in Ireland (I thought I was going to get rejected, but that applying was a good idea anyway), but once I did I made the decision that going abroad would probably be best for my situation. This wasn’t a decision that I made lightly, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

      They had us list all of the science prerequisites that we had in the application, but the only major requirements are having a bachelors degree and taking the MCAT (if you are able to learn the science enough to take the MCAT they are likely able to teach you the science to succeed in medical school). Not having a science background does make the curriculum more difficult; however, it is possible. If you are interested in RCSI, I would highly recommend reaching out to admissions@rcsi.ie and/or Atlantic Bridge if you are from North America (www.atlanticbridge.com ).

      Hi! Great questions. At the time of making this video (just after I finished my first year - oh how time flies) I was still considering practicing in Canada. However, I have now decided that I would like to practice in the US and I am not applying to Canada. At RCSI in order to apply to the graduate medicine program (the program I am in) you have to have previously done a bachelors degree and taken the MCAT which makes the course length 4 years, but you also have to factor in that most people in my class have done at least a bachelors (avg 4 years) and some have master's and PhDs (2-4+ years on top of that) before starting medical school.
