Flight attendant here! There will always be ashtrays on planes until the end of time due to the dumb people that decide to smoke on a plane. Just because it’s banned doesn’t stop people from smoking - which can cause fire and put everyone at risk. Mile Higher should definitely do an episode on Boeing and the corruption. It’s truly eye opening and may make your fear of flying even worse though once you see how unsafe Boeing really is. They even have their first ship in space right now and it’s broken with people’s lives on the line. It’s insane.

He panicked and threw it in the trash can where we had to fish it out and luckily nothing caught on fire. There’s serious consequences for people who decide to smoke on planes - it’s not worth it. The idea of the ashtray is just somewhere that’s deemed “safe” to put out a substance such as a cigarette because it won’t catch anything on fire. They are usually attached to the lavatory doors.
A few months ago I was on a flight from Toronto to Frankfurt and definitely had a “WTF, how old is this plane?!” moment when I went to the bathroom and saw an ashtray on the back of the door, so I appreciate this explanation thank you 😅
As a former flight attendant, the older ones are more dependable than the newer ones. Trust me. They look old, smell old but the mechanics are incredible! Take like a washer and dryer made 20-30 years ago, invest in the parts which will save you much money and engineering was made to last!
I'm a current fa and have been flying for 17 years (only Boeing aircraft...WN) and there are so many more mechanicals with the newer aircraft than our older 700s. It's pathetic.

Planes still have ashtrays in case someone decides to break the rules and smoke. Otherwise, if someone does smoke and an ashtray wasn't available, they may put the cigarette butts in the trashcan and that can cause a fire.

@@Mel.H_ nothing about it is technically dangerous but there has been shootings , normal bad concert behavior so the location itself isn’t dangerous it just comes with all the dangers a crowed can bring .
