Turning up to dinner or a BBQ with nothing is ok if you know the hosts well and you're specifically instructed by them not to bring anything (though often people will anyway). But if in doubt, a bottle of wine or bubbly, or some beers is perfectly acceptable! And yes indeed, living on acreage we are always watching where we're walking! I gave Mr Red-Belly Black Snake an apologetic wave the other day when I flattened a pile of dirt with the tractor bucket which turned out to be his home. He wasn't happy, but he slithered off somewhere to find a new one.

I really enjoy seeing you both and the tips you give about Australia, thanks so much for being totally honest, I couldn’t be more proud of my country but as you are saying you’ve really got to know where and what you’re doing and be prepared 👏🇦🇺

It's not just jumping into the ocean that you need to be wary about, it's ALL water. Here in WA we have crocs (NT and QLD as well) in rivers and inland water holes, where tourists have been lunch (that mostly happened in the 70s and early 80s when backpacking became a big thing ). We also have large cobbler fish and sting rays in our estuaries, and bull sharks are well known to travel up into our rivers, even the Swan River and the Peel Estuary / Serpentine River systems, where we've had 2/3 metre sharks most summers. ALWAYS check with the local communities before swimming anywhere.....Schoolies, oh goodness me, that must've been a culture shock lol....If in WA, don't go anywhere South of Bunbury, or to Rottnest Island, where Schoolies take over both on this side of the island lol

Good list! Good to hear you're getting more balance too. There is SO MUCH to see and do. So far I've lived in the same city in NSW all my life and about 10 years ago I took my son on a Historic Tram tour of the area... I snapped photos like a tourist even though I've been through those same streets for years. We forget how many things there are to see and do here.

Came across a couple in the East MacDonnell ranges 450km from nowhere. Flat tire, no spanners, no tire repair kit, no air pump, a flat spare and no EPERB. Two months previously a German couple had the same problem, on the forth day they had no option but to activate the EPERB.

I still shudder when I remember the day I was in a souvenir shop in Darwin (as a domestic tourist) when a very young mother with two little girls went to the counter with two pairs of beautiful bathers for the girls. The shop assistant casually asked the Mother where she would be taking the girls swimming, to which Mum replied “just down to the beach here”. The shop assistant quickly explained what a very dangerous idea that was and the young Mum was shocked. She had no idea there were crocs in the sea there. I often wonder what would have happened if a less vigilant assistant had been serving that day.

Do you know how to read ocean" rip" in case you get stuck in one?
Always " swim with the rip" not against it.
Because the tide, ocean can pull " you in"
Living along the Great Ocean Rd, known this all my life.
Lorne, Angelsea, Apollo Bay beaches have very strong rips.

Toolies are adults usually early twenties to late teens hanging around the drunk schoolies, and a lot of the problems associated with Schoolies week are the fault of the toolies.

The amount of blissful ignorance of Australian waters is frightening. Tourists don’t know the dangers of the ocean and how quickly a person can drown. Some don’t know what the red and yellow flags mean. We are ALWAYS weary of oceans and creeks even when swimming in them.
