To say that they paid attention to detail when they created Onslaught, and to say that he is a memorable boss would both be massive understatements. Not only did Onslaught had a really good theme, really good dialogues, and really insane attacks, since this was the last VS. series to come out on the CPS2, they wanted to make sure they went out with a banger of a final boss and seeing how popular X-Men was in Japan at the time, it's a win-win for everyone involved! Probably, nostalgia is talking, but Onslaught definitely had a lot going for him, and he truly lived up to his name... If you fought him (and won), you truly felt like a Marvel/Capcom legend. Thanks again for the retrospective, this just shows that Onslaught was truly a one of a kind boss that to this day, no other character really replicated since. Fun fact: Hulk beating Onslaught is a canon event.
Fun story: People in the laundromat that i went to long ago made bets on who can defeat this guy, either the most stylish or the fastest. People at that time died super fast to his 1st form, never block his "mighty hand" or avoid the lasers. Proud to say that my ryu and spider man combo won me 8 dollars years ago on those bets But jeez this dude is legit a nostalgia boss whenever you look at him
I feel like every place in NYC with a cab had that one person in the neighborhood did stupid good against Onslaught, lol. There was a junkie that'd frequent my local laundromat. Dude may not have made the best decisions in life, but I've seen him get up to Onslaught with Roll/War Machine without taking damage on multiple occasions. Wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it for myself.
It's crazy how some suits at Marvel urged Capcom to use Onslaught as the end boss for MvC only for Marvel to not give Onslaught any major appearances in any film or cartoon adaptations. Also, an interesting detail that I noticed is how Onslaught's victory quote against you is "The dream is dead" while Cyclops (who was the leader of the XMen when MvC was released ) has a quote in which he says "Dreams don't die!" Just an interesting contrast.
Onslaught was a major character in 90's Marvel. Marvel was going bankrupt and used Onslaught the basically fusion of Charles Xavier and Magneto, and they wrote out all of their unpopular series (Everything BUT X-Men and Spider-Man). But the line "The dream is dead" refers to Charles Xavier's dream of human and mutant coexistence that the X-Men were founded on and fought for. Cyclops was Charles Xavier's main pupil and the first X-Men he ever taught
I actually thought Onslaught was an OC made for this game lol. I'd LOVE more videos on the bosses of this series! This was so interesting to learn about!
Gosh, I had forgotten how freaking good the banter with Onslaught was in MvC1. I love Megaman's. Giant psychic mech-looking thing is just business-as-usual. Wolverine's is just heartwarming... but I love the idea of Zangeif taking him down. "Wait, *you* defeated Onslaught?! How?" "I use my Atomic Buster pile driver, very strong move" "Wha..." Chun-Li: "Nah guys, he actually is REALLY good at pile-driving"
I always found it a massive, missed opportunity that Marvel vs Capcom was never adapted into a comic book series or a movie. Though I heard the comics were considered at one point.
One of the most beloved fighting game franchises in the world and only the very last two entries can be reasonably played legally, and those are probably on a time limit, too I know the situation is more complex than that but man it sucks that we don't have an emulation compilation or something
I always love how packed these videos are with lore and game info. I've had the Complete Onslaught books for yrs and have NEVER been able to read through them. I've only read through a few chapters of vol 1 (there's 4 volumes in all) and that was it. I'd really like to read through them all someday. Also, gotta agree with you on Onslaught's impact as a boss in the MVC series. Cyber Akuma was pretty tough, but Onslaught took it to a whole different level. He'd beat the change outta me to the point where I'd have to try another day. I don't believe I ever defeated Onslaught prior to getting the PS1 port of MVC. Another interesting thing to note is the difference in some of the character dialogue to Onslaught. In the US version, Strider says nothing, with Onslaught commenting on his silence. In the JPN version, he says something along the lines of "Time to wake up from your stupid dreams, Onslaught" and Onslaught replies "I am immortal and I shall grant you an eternal slumber, Strider Hiryu." It's always interesting to see how different things can be based on the version. As always, thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos.
Yeah, it's a slog to read through. The first 2-3 volumes are honestly where a lot of the good stuff is. Once you get to the point where the Sentinel attacks start happening, it kind of loses steam fast, but there's still some cool moments. I very specifically left out the JP Strider win quote because that's a subject matter I plan on tackling down the road. CvS2 and MvC3 in particular damn near have entirely different (and more interesting) scripts in their Japanese releases, and I want to go more into detail on that.
15:58 "Your come back shall be short lived, Captain" That's real savage and he was right. But rejoice, as of today both of them have been brought back by the modders for Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3. If they could also mod the post fight dialogue, this reference should be on the top of the list.
I'm gladly we have MVC Collection in our hands. So, we can visit these tough but cheap VS series bosses. There's also a UMVC3 mod where you can play as his normal only version of Onslaught which he also has Hyper Sentinel Force as his Hyper Combo exclusive to that mod alongside his classic moves.
Maurice Dean Wint also was a black RoboCop (RoboCable) in "RoboCop Prime Directives". It was a surprise to me that he was the voice of this version of Onslaught!
I'm so glad you made this video!!!! I didn't know you made it! Onslaught is still an amazing character and when MVC made him a boss...I was speechless!!!! I was like " Oh dear Lord!!!" Not to mention his majesty in his 2nd form!! I was in complete awe!!!!
Just now dawned on me that Seth’s character art that’s displayed before a match starts in SF4 is a nearly identical pose to Onsluts (typo, but to funny I’m leaving it in) character art from MvC1.
Correction about Psionic puppet: Onslaught actually made psionic clones of the original five X men and sent them out to fight the current X men. The recolor characters are actually clones of War Machine, Hulk and Venom respectively who view themselves as the real characters they were based upon despite recognizing onslaught as their master and a god of destruction that they serve. At some point during arcade, the heroic personalities of the original characters resurface inside the psionic clones. They turn on onslaught and beg their partner to kill them for dooming humanity.
Great video. Given recent events in Pop Culture (see: Xmen 97) I've been revisiting Onslaught's past (and the Versus games were a big part of my life) so this video scratched all the itches. Fantastically done and quite the comprehensive coverage.
Very Interesting Video ... Imagine if we got a new MVC with Onslaught as the big bad , or at least as a character. I especially like his ability to summon random characters to fight for him as a special move
EM Pulse is the single most hilarious move Magneto's ever had and now that you mention it, I kinda want to do a video focusing on that boss fight. He's an absolute menace in CoTA
So coming back to this video, here's what I think of covering the other bosses, I know the bosses that became normal characters will later get their own videos, (I.e, Juggernaut, Magneto, Thanos, Geese, and I'm assuming boss versions of regular characters like Cyber-Akuma or God Rugal will be in the videos on them?) so no need to bring up them. Apocalypse I think could be an interesting episode, showing off the different ways to unlock him in both games, the fact that he was in two games to begin with, and you could also use it as an excuse to talk about his stage with all of its cameo's, plus he's not really the most well-known villain when it comes to non-comic readers, so getting to talk about a character that's not really talked about much outside of the comic books. Abyss I won't blame you for not covering, not playable outside of hacks, not from Marvel or an existing Capcom game, and not really much to talk about anyway, maybe if you feel like it, but I wouldn't really care much if he wasn't covered. Yami I feel the same as Abyss, I wouldn't blame you for not covering because it's not playable outside of hacks, and not too much to talk about, but it is from an existing Capcom game so it would at least make for a better episode than Abyss. Galactus I kinda feel deserves his own episode, he's kind of treated like he actually is on the roster, he has a spot in the statistics part of your license, (Meaning the part where you see how many times you used that character) he has his own icons in the license customization, (The one showing his face like all the others do, and his alternate one being just his helmet) he was made playable in his own mode in Ultimate, he's got interaction's like everyone else, he's got an ending, he's pretty much a full character aside from no alt colors, no spot on the character select screen, and no combo trials, he's even got a taunt, apparently there was also some unused dialog for his as well. And for the two bosses for Infinite, Ultron Omega and Ultron Sigma, I also wouldn't blame you for not doing them ether, Omega doesn't have a mode like Galactus, and not much to talk about, Ultron Sigma I think has a bit more to talk about but not much still, although I did hear that there was some dialog in the files relating to him that might have suggested he was going to be playable but was cut. (Man that's a lot of text)
It'll take me a bit to do Frank. I actually started work on his video a few weeks back, but my (mostly complete) Dead Rising 1 save corrupted before I could get the footage I needed for it, so I'm going to have to go through the game again before I can continue working on that video.
Hey like your stuff. It's good but to let you know-- Krikora is shit. And everything past the incursion arc is shit (that includes Doom Planet). You do good stuff, but anything that's not Lee/Kirby Universe isn't very good, especially the woke Marvel stuff.
I don't necessarily disagree about the Incursions being where things peaked; My interest in modern Marvel outside from a handful of books dropped a ton after Secret Wars wrapped. Krakoa I liked because it was some fresh air after years of what amounted to mutant misery snuff in X-books, but it is kind of out there, and I don't fault anywhere for not liking it, since it's such a radical shift (And honestly, it also stopped being as interesting once Hickman left)

@TheSeventhForce honestly, not that surprising. NYC is home to so many out of nowhere folks that nothing surprises me anymore

Just an interesting contrast.
By "quote" I mean "voice line." Onslaught and Cyclops both have voice clips exclaiming references to this "dream."
"The dream is dead" is actually one of Magneto's win quotes in MvC3. A suitable reference.
Thank god! It was the X-Men's last great story arc, without being ridiculously convoluted. I hope they never touch that and "The Age of Apocalypse".
I actually thought Onslaught was an OC made for this game lol. I'd LOVE more videos on the bosses of this series! This was so interesting to learn about!

Considering how much grief he gives Gief (probably the hardest character to beat him with) that dialogue would've more than made up for it 😂
I always found it a massive, missed opportunity that Marvel vs Capcom was never adapted into a comic book series or a movie. Though I heard the comics were considered at one point.
There is this small comic feature in Umvc3.

In a perfect world we would have marvel vs capcom 1 to ultimate in a big bundle.. that would be awesome..

COTA to MVC2 are finally home.
The world is perfect now I guess
If they make all of the bosses playable in the bundle. Pretty near perfect I would say. 😊
@@amb-yz9eeit’s not. MvC3 and UMvC3 aren’t on the bundle despite them most certainly being able to run at 60fps on switch

Marvel Snap finally added a voice when you play Onslaught's card. He says "Behold my mighty hand", which so cool, cause MvC 1 😂
