Note from Frank: "This is my version of the original arrangement of the Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Nady Zolc. I have reinstated some of the original notation and changed some if the articulation to suit my own strengths, but kept the F minor transposed key of course. Enjoy!"
Playing the horn is like driving the wrong way on the freeway, on ice, blind folded, and you still want to get exactly where you are going. This guy is amazing!
this is described so well! as a horn player, i relate to this! 😄
I've been playing horn for five years. AND THIS IS AMAZING HOW IS THIS HUMANLY POSSIBLE!?
+Natalie Nicole RIIIIIIIIGHT???
+Natalie Nicole A whole lot of practice!
IKR man the fast intervals are insane.
Natalie Nicole dont know ive been playing horn for 2 years cant play like this not even a half :D
It isn’t humanly possible, he just isn’t human
Totally love your two-tone improvisations. Sounded great. What a most difficult piece. Very enjoyable. Thank you.
zetacon4 How does he do that?!
@@alexisfiotakis8625 He sings one of the pitches into the horn while he keeps buzzing the other. To my knowledge, the sung note has to be one on the same overtone series (fingering) as the note he is buzzing on the horn.
That's called playing "multiphonics" and yes, you buzz one note and hum/sing the other.
Frank and I joined the RM band together in 1968. He's not only a virtuoso horn player, he's also an all round great guy. Frank is president of the International Horn Society and they have a convention in London in a few days where he'll be playing. Get there if you can.
Frank, this is seriously the most inspiring virtuoso piece I have ever heard on a horn. Thank you so much for sharing this unbelievable video!
A display of virtuosity, mastery of the instrument, master of harmony and technically perfect. Simply amazing.
Holy heck I've never heard multiphonics that well coordinated across the whole range of the instrument, or such a solid pedal C. And the technical parts of course 👌
Literally nothing in this is easy. Every moment I'm impressed by something different
I've never been so impressed. Bravo!
My 10 year old son just started playing Horn. I'll have to show him this. Brilliant!
wow... that is absolutely amazing... that song isn't easy in organ, i can't imagine in the french horn. He makes it look very easy.
Holy. Crap. Awesome job. Multiphonics are out of this world, and range flexibility is insane. Truly a master of the horn.
Playing this is the equivalent of a violinist nailing Paganini's Caprice No. 24.
My faith in the capabilities of humankind is heightened, Mr. Lloyd! Thank you so much for making this beautiful performance available for the world to partake of.
Sincerely,
Eric Benjamin Gordon (from New York City).
Mind blowing. An amazing arrangement, Frank, you have some serious chops.
Just absolutely virtuosic playing. It was mesmerising . What a gift.
I had no idea a horn could be made to do such amazing things. And the player is obviously having way to much fun.
God of French Horns....
Amazing! Such playing can only be played by an unbelievable artist! Thank you so much for gifting us with such an outstanding performance!
This is the greatest piece of music I have ever heard from a French Hornist I greatly enjoyed
I can't believe this! Amazing! Thank you for your sharing.
Found your wonderful video 7 years after you posted it but better late.....
I have listened to this Bach work so many times but never on the horn and what a revelation it is. Just goes to show exactly how much of a genius Bach was; you can play his works on any instrument and new aspects of the work reveal themselves. Beautiful interpretation, fantastic technique. Many thanks for sharing your performance.
Hi Sir Frank,
came here again.
And still remembering my early days in horn playing.
When we listened the Lollipops - not CD - wasn't invented then.
But LP!
We listened again and again at military band after rehearsals. And were astonished.
But now you have improved alot. :) (Kidding)
Very many thanks for that.
You were a hero of my youthl And you still are!
Потрясающе ! БРАВО !!!
Up next, Frank Lloyd plays... Pink Floyd? :)
NO chuck Lloyd the myth
Fantastic! Well done, sir.
Amazing horn player!! 😁😁 love it
This is only my second year playing the horn, and this is very inspiring!
Virtuoso Frank Lloyd! wowww
Pretty good man. I enjoyed that. God I want to play horn again.
Fantástico, Bravo!!!!
Wow!! Simply Brilliant!
Amazing. Playing chords on a French horn? Great range and perfect articulation.
Bravo Frank! Good job! Greeting from Hungary!
Certainly a long way from playing jolly old A Life On The Ocean Waves. ! 😂 Well done Frank, as always an amazing virtuosic performance. Well done Bandy. 😀
Quite amazing!!!
this sounds FREAKING amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I played the horn for about 10 years starting before high school through college and had no idea it had that kind of range!
Usually it doesn't!!
Невообразимо, гениально.Высочайший пилотаж.
Wow, I'd love to hear him perform live!
I am an 12 yr old horn player always first chair,it is a really great instrument i love it
Glad I dropped by!! This version is even more amazing than when I heard him do it live in San Francisco in 2010. I wonder what his vision is for his future? Can it be any better?
You're an inspiration. I had a choice in college: academic or music. I went academic so I could work. Was a tough choice because I loved music. But I needed to be able to support myself - sans student loans or the gov taking care of me (I just think it's wrong). Couldn't do music and work and school. So music left me - but doesn't mean I don't miss it. It's always been the one thing that can get me grounded - no matter what's going on in my life.
What a beautiful instrument
True chords master!
Omg, that's amazing! Great hornist :D
Wow, brilliant! I'm kind of worried about starting my band class now.
Wow. Your amazing!
I play and LOVE it!!
ПОТРЯСАЮЩЕ!

Dang, those endless 16ths or whatever fast notes those are...

Some of them were probably 32nd notes
Fantazmic!

OMG!!!!!! Let me just pick my jaw up off the floor...
This is insane :D
Браво Маестро!!!
the best and only!
Is there sheet music available?
Woooow, so glad I could hear him again! Just as amazing as with PJBE.
This little tyrolean piece of music, you remember? :))
Thank you very much, Sir Frank!
P.S.: Did you already meet Sarah's horn hangout? Would like to hear you talking about your career as a french horn player!
Toccata in D Minor -Bach
//Wow so cool
Удивительно💕😍, невообразимо, неповторимо, уникально. Думаю что такого уровня валторнистов на всём земном шаре либо нет, а если и есть, то очень мало.
Magical
I picked up my horn yesterday after almost 50 years away from it. I wish I'd had somebody like you, Frank Lloyd, to inspire me back then -- though I admit that it might have scared me into quitting even sooner. One question: Some of the deeper chords seem to be produced entirely within the horn, but are some of the others created by vocalizing (humming) into the horn? Either way your virtuosity is utterly astounding.
uNBELIEVABLE!
Great!
Moltíssimes gràcies. 😍
I cannot express how inspiring it is to see the horn being played this way. Most of my experience came from HighSchool and being made to play umpa-lumpa parts for years. So greatful this exists!
Any chance someone can point out to me what were the exact changes Lloyd made ? I have the music sheet composed by Zsolt, but I'd like to learn it exactly the way its played in this recording.
amazing
Отлично!!!
Most enjoyable
Grande!!! Fantastic!!!
Cool idea. Would Love to hear an Arrangement 4 horn- ensemble...
Отлично! Очень мило. Основная спасибо.
WOW!@ Impresiinante..
Das ist super gut Bact!!!!!
Who else plays the french horn!? (i do!!!!!)
I play it too ❤
So do I and I actually played with Frank when he was in the Royal Marined Band.
Ayy
Me! I started this year
Me too!
I think he’s producing the multiphonics by playing the lower note while humming the higher. Still cool.
Actually the name is Nagy Zsolt, he's a hungarian hornist, I know him personally. Thanks for the video, great performance!
bravissimooooo
This is amazing!! Where I can find the arrangement??
Perfeito!
A GENIUS MASTER🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
I only just found out just how impressive the French Horn's range is. Until then, I had no idea.
Indeed. Together with the Euphonium. Which i play. Hornd and Euphoniums have the largest range of all brass instruments. 😄
He is the magician!!!!
Unbelievable!!!!!!
Multiphonics! I didn’t even know that could be done!
Definitely impressed, btw I play French horn in band😜
Well, I'm impressed.
I am a horn player, I somehow saw this video. I am so amazed right now I can't even... how is this possible...
On a totally unrelated note, am I the only one watching this in 2018?
What about 2020
Respekt!
素晴らしい!
Impressionante
Epic..
Were there multiphonics throughout or at least for most of it??? Freakin' amazing.
One word: WOW
The tone around 1:30 -1:32
Without words!
Yeah!
I play a euphonium and I could never imagine playing a french horn
You should try it out! It's a very soulful and beautiful instrument! The only down side is the mouthpiece being small and also the hand being played with the left hand and not the right hand.. Also, you need some strength to hold it up too..
If you are going to play a French Horn or want to at least try it out a lot of people say start with a Single Horn instrument.. Supposedly it's easier..I wouldn't know because I started out playing the Double Horn (unknowingly of course)...
I tried playing the trumpet and the mouth piece was little for me so I can't imagine a french horn mouth piece
XD Lmao! Well, sir.. If you got a dime or nickle on you I think that would be about the size of the mouthpiece we play on XD
maybe a quarter and I'm just over doing it, but it's a pretty comfortable mouthpiece to me when I first started when I was 11 ... I already knew how to play...I guess it's was a natural match because I sat in band class for a month not knowing what to play and my teacher finally put me on an instrument and that's how I got started..
The more advance you get the more you struggle...
Trumpet mouthpiece is so uncomfortable to me.. I feel like the Mellophone and Trumpet mouthpiece is similar
Musician Friendly from what I hear, double horn is easier to play higher
Was he doing all of this by memory??
