Monserrat Caballé was known as “La Superba” (The Superb) by opera aficionados - she was one of the most respected and admired operatic sopranos of the second half of the 20th century. She was born in 1933 and made her professional opera debut in 1956… one of her last performances I can find a reference to was in 2012 (at 79 years old!) when she had a stroke while touring in Russia. She passed away on Oct 6, 2018 at the age of 85…
Tender friendship btwn them both...this was first rock-opera crossover. He was very proud of this...especially the timing (after he learned his Aids diagnosis). She was eternally grateful and this was a treasure to her.
Beauty overload. This performance is simply outstanding. Not what one expects from Freddie but then with Freddie, it is always best to expect the unexpected. Thank you for a great reaction.
Freddie said she has the best voice in the world. She was a Spanish Soprano, very highly regarded internationally. They recorded this song for the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona. This album is part of Freddie's solo work without the rest of the Queen band officially taking part although Roger and John took part on some of his other solo album
Montserrat was one of the few people who Freddie confided in about his HIV diagnosis early on. This particular song was to be the song for the opening performances of the 1992 Olympics (this song was produced in 1987 and she was from Barcelona), but Freddie apologized to Montserrat that he would not be around to see it. Which turned out be true as he died November of 1991. With that in mind, when you are ready for the emotions of it, the last music video that Freddie was in was "These are the Days of our Lives" Otherwise keep going with anything from 1981 Montreal live or 1986 Wembley live shows.
Monserrat is on film saying that when she was recording with Freddie she was going to drink out of a glass that he had drank from and Freddie stopped her because he was scared of her catching HIV. That's when he told her he was HIV positive. She cried when she told this story.
Freddie was much more than a rock singer having a good voice and wide vocal range. 😁 He and his friend Mike Moran composed a full album for Montserrat and Freddie.
Montsy is the equivalent of Freddie in the Opera world, so the combination of the two is something really special. Golden Boy has a jazz/gospel feel & there are some funny stories of Freddie & Mike trying to teach Montsy how to sing in that genre. Montsy & Freddie became really close friends.
To sing opera is very difficult - about 8 hours a day of training. Love that you are so open to different song styles and your enthusiasm is wonderful !
Omg...loved it. You seriously have to watch The Golden Boy, Guide me home / how can I go on... by these two. Their album was called Barcelona. Freddie stepped into Opera meets took pop.... Montserrat Caballe was a famous Soprano. Freddie's favourite Opera singer!!... they had great respect and love for one another. Also, please listen to Freddie's solo, Exercises in Free love... tones only, no words. This was the B side to The Great Pretender. Shown to Montserrat when the collaboration was suggested. She loved it.
Great reaction! I believe that this was the first collaboration between performers of two different genres - rock and opera - that was done. And as some others have already commented, Freddie and Montserrat did an entire album together.
I love the collaboration between Freddie and Montserrat. Please react to “The Golden Boy”, Montserrat encouraged Freddie to sing in baritone, a range he did not do very often for Queen songs.
Is there anything more perfect?? Montsy (nickname from Freddie) was a superstar opera singer from Barcelona!! They truly had a musical love affair 🎼💕 Their collaboration with Mike Moran (piano) created Heavenly duets with our Freddie & Montsy! My favorite from the album is THE GOLDEN BOY 💛
This song was written by Freddie and Mike Moran for the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Montserrat’s home city. Such a beautiful song with an amazing performance. Perfection in every way!!!
THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DAY (again)! PLEASE REACT TO: "EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE" ORIGINAL 1987 DEMO (Audio only-pic shows FREDDIE IN A TUX) "ENSUENO" (The "follow-up" duet to Exercises In Free Love) "THE GOLDEN BOY" LIVE AT LA NIT "IT'S A HARD LIFE" LIVE AT EITHER ROCK IN RIO OR JAPAN, 1985
This is how the two ended up Making this album Barcelona. Freddy saw an opera with her in it and thought she had the greatest voice he had ever heard. Not long after he was in Spain where she is from and when interviewed he was asked who is favorite singer was. He said She was his favorite singer. Word went around to her and they agreed to met. Freddie was very nervous and said he would have been happy if she only wanted to be friends With him But working with her was like a dream come true. He wrote this song for her and then she asked him to write a whole album for the two of them. She said when she met him she was totally captivated by him and that he conquered her. She's said for the 1st time in her career she felt a sense of freedom. This song was chosen for The 1992 summer Olympics in Barcelona. Sadly freddie didn't live long enough to see it. He passed in 91. They became very good friends and we're supposed to record an Album of phantom of the opera together with Freddy as the phantom but he became to sick. He had told her 2 years prior that he would not be around to Sing at the Olympics. I think, I'm not positive, That they did use the song in the opening ceremony but as a video.
OMG, King - you did hear "perfection" - the story of Freddie and "Montsy" as he came to call her - is amazing.. he always admired her - she was a Spanish "diva" opera soprano - and Freddie had a dream to write for her/sing with her - which came true -- he wrote this song - and actually, they recorded an album together -- they were truly in love - you can see it in their faces and their gestures... a favorite of mine by them is "How can I go On" -- ruclips.net/video/ksNoe8W2jTc/видео.html - you can see how much fun she is having - just has to lip-synch - lol -- I hope you have time & inclination to hear that one - and others... "The Golden Boy" is also amazing... all written by Freddie...
Freddie was a huge fan of hers. From the interviews she did before she passed away four years ago, it didn't take long after they met for that to become very much a mutual thing. I read that they had wanted to work together on The Phantom of the Opera after this, but their schedules never cleared before he ran out of time.
I don't know if you have ever watched the movie Bohemian Rhapsody yet, but it's the story of Freddie and how he joined Queen and right up until the Live Aid concert in 1985 and of course his diagnosis of the fact that he had AIDS. But on the movie it touches on the fact that Freddie always liked Opera music and this is how he already knew of Monserrat Caballe. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) approached Freddie to write a song for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and this is when he contacted MC who is actually from the Spanish city. Probably the most iconic Olympic games theme ever written and an absolute masterpiece. Very sad though that Freddie wasn't around by the time the Games started.
Of course I've enjoyed this hundreds of times perhaps. Too enjoyable. You were precious! Thanks! Now hope I can see you've listened to them do "The Golden Boy" and "How Can I Go On" and a couple others. Their "Barcelona " album was a hit.
Hey prince’s of the universe & give me the prize among others were written by Queen for the film Highlander, great music videos has Freddie & chris Lampembert, the Star 🌟 of the movie having a duel with swords ⚔️ in the video.
A great duo are Floor Jansen (Nightwish) and Hank Poort (Dutch Opera singer, with a new career as a rock voice) pure fire 🔥🔥🤘🤘 Check out if you want 🙂 👋🇩🇪
Amazing performance from both of them 🔥
YOU ARE KING SUPREME!! Thanks!
You must watch Montserrat Caballe singing " Casta Diva " in a live performance of Norma in 1974. She had to fight against a terrible wind. She won...
They did an album together.
2 more songs from that album, really, really good!
GOLDEN BOY &
HOW CAN I GO ON.
They did The Golden Boy, which is also amazing.
Prior comments remain…that said I cannot help absolutely find your joy wonderful
Absolute perfection
Great reaction. Freddie can do it all.🎶❣️

As far as I know, her last performance was the Kiev concert in April of 2018 which she gave from a wheelchair.

If you liked this you definitely need to react to Golden Boy. Freddie’s brilliant fusion of opera meets rock/gospel/soul!

Greetings from Germany.
It's a beautiful feeling isn't it? Glad you listened to this.
Yes perfection my friend! RIP Freddie god bless Queen 👑
Freddie was a big fan, called her Montsy.

A Winter's Tale, beautiful song. Written and sang by Freddy in the last months of his short life. Apparently it was about the view from his window.
Best reaction to this song - Ever! It's so beautiful. They sounded so great together.

Magnificent, for Heaven's sake...
She died a few years ago and how wonderful the heavens sound with her and Freddie reunited
Barcelona is just an appetizer, The Golden Boy is the main course! Bon Appetit!
Perfection❤❤❤
Great reaction
You really seem to be authentic with your reaction. It’s difficult for most to recognize greatness without being competitive with personal likes.
