I remember riding my Schwinn Stingray Bicycle to that race at 15 years old and managed to get into the pit lane! Those were heady times for a kid my age but it was one of those moments in life that changed the trajectory of my life because I got into professional Motorsports. The first team I worked for was Electramovive engineering building and campaigning GTP cars & Stadium off road trucks for Nissan and that was the beginning of my 40 year career in racing! Today I still own a small fabrication shop in Sonoma California working mainly on race cars
thanks for posting! This was the first F1 race I ever attended, we were sitting down by the hairpin before the front straight. during quali Jaques Laffite in the Ligier Matra would blast past, when he was alone as he approached the other end of the straight in top gear you could hear the organ effect of the Matra engine for a few seconds - absolutely glorious! I’ve been waiting to hear it again ever since..
Four years later Clay would be paralyzed from a snapped brake pedal at the hairpin at the end of the Shoreline straight. I was there and saw it happen. Saw him win this race too. Sad how many of the driver`s in this race had bad endings. It was a different game back then. I sure miss it though.

pure driving, pure racing
And they are still running there 40 years later, with IndyCar of course. Still an impressive streak.
Grande Clay !
This is NOT the first Long Beach GP - it's the first one run by Formula One. The first LBGP was run by Formula 5000 in 1975.
thanks!!
I was there
F1 cars of this era are very ugly.
There was nothing uglier in F1 than the flying teapot.
