Talk about a perfect song for the joker. A song that's uplifting, yet feels sinister played alongside the character of the Joker.
It's exactly the sort of song the Joker would play during a crime.
Wouldn’t say sinister in my opinion but unknown. Spacey. Sounds very decrepit with a little zest and mystery on it. And of course ending jumps from a “Look what you’ve become/created” take to a “Creepy” take when he smiles in the elevator

Eh it’s not really that uplifting. It sounds like it is at first but it’s actually kinda depressing.
this song is what i like to call an edgy song. its not explicitly dark or anything, but it seems to fit better in an early 2000's horror remake than wherever the hell you'd find this elsewhere. and certain characters that you'd typically associate with this sort of category i've made up include the joker, bill cipher, freddy krueger, slenderman, and carnage. songs like this include:

I come back to this so often, because when listening to this I can feel that descent into madness. It’s just really well written. When 1:27 hits you can feel all of the tragedy and the insanity and everything Arthur goes through being painted in the music. It’s amplified by the visuals and acting as well, and I think that’s what made the trailer so captivating and interesting

@Alecs Baughh Sure, but if we replace the music with Gunnan style(sorry if I spell incorrectly), it will be very distracting. So distracting that people might take credit off the trailer, people will have problems with the trailer and observe more of the bad stuff. People will become more negative over one thing that's very distracting.
IF the music is replaced with GENERIC trailer music, it wouldn't be as effective either. People will associate this trailer more with being generic if the music is generic.
Besides, the music has such a creepy and dreadful tone that fits the teaser. Its just too perfect.

@@kayden2119 Yes, I was going to include that reason but the thing is that there's just so many reasons as to why the Joker teaser is so popular. There's so many factors that it's very hard to just organize it and be precise.

Where to even begin in explaining how excellent this music is for the trailer? Let's start with the obvious.
This is a horror trailer score. Well, no it's not. It's still an action trailer score, but it's littered with tropes of horror music. The juxtaposition of a happy song with the horrible events happening on screen, the use of bells and of course the old timey record sound (which makes us think the music is in-universe even though it's not) all give this a distinctly "horror" character, which perfectly sets the tone for the trailer from the first few seconds. Moreover, the choice of song is an excellent representation of the character we are being introduced to (not to mention the excellent performance, whose singing of the word "smile", and indeed the other lyrics, with their slight delay and elongation of consonants, is imitative of the way we think of the Joker as speaking). He has been conditioned to stay positive, despite all his abuse, and in a different movie we would see this contradiction resolved by the world becoming a better place to fit with his ideals, which is why it is so effective that when we watch his descent into madness (mirrored by Gotham's descent into chaos) the music becomes, for the first time in this trailer, unashamedly positive. We get swelling strings repeating an established melody, we get rid of that old time record sound effect, and we feel for the main character as he is finally liberated from his contradiction through his madness. We then end with a similar tone to the beginning, bringing us nicely full circle, exciting us for the main film and ensuring we remember that he is indeed a very bad guy by restoring the horror elements (although this time the Joker is the horror, not Gotham).
Fundamentally, what makes this score so great is that it borrows from different genre tropes to juxtapose with what is happening on screen, all while fitting into the structure of a superhero film trailer musical score (contemplative quiet to begin with, interspersed with single notes/chords with echo effect, then hinting at a theme, then swelling when we see the action, then finally going to a final quiet so we can get some final words from the protagonist/antagonist). We can't help but think about these other movie genres and their tropes and clichés when we hear it, which has a massively transformative effect on the visuals of the trailer, and manages to tell us something about the film that the visuals alone would find it hard to. It is fantastic.

The trailer that goes with this song HAS to win an award or an Oscar, I'm not even kidding, it is exceptionally done. I have listened to all the various versions that were used to create the trailer, including the instrumental version of the original song Smile used in Charlie Chaplin's 1936 movie Modern Times, and the original Smile by Jimmy Durante to compare. I also checked out the other soundtracks of the artist who does the soundtrack for this movie. And everything was mixed and orchestrated so well to create such a powerful song for this trailer. I just keep going back and listening to it over and over. If this trailer does not win an award I will be absolutely shocked.

My take on the soundtrack: 0:02 to 0:27 - Here Arthur is upset, sad... trying to keep his head up, trying to be happy and cheer people up any way he can and survive. 0:27 to 0:48 here he is attacked and offended ... he holds his head high and considers that this is part of it, and that he must keep trying to be happy despite the pain in all aspects. 0:47 to 1:26 Here he goes through the same things, and worse... trying to meet people, getting excited... but he achieves the opposite. 1:27 to 2:17 He then starts to get confused... he tries to get better, but it gets worse... a mental fight between Arthur and Joker... until... the Joker wins and accepts himself. A personality that has confidence, diction, courage and revenge against those who made Arthur suffer... because they will feel the same and even worse. And then, the whole world will know and fear the JOKER.
It’s almost like from 1:14 to the end, a dramatic and violent transformation is happening. A bit Jekyll/Hyde style. Imagine as he slowly loses his mind and laughs/cries as he rocks back and forth, his hair turns green and face pale white. Then at the climax he looks up with an evil grin.

Hopefully the Joker musical score isn't a complete 180 to the beautiful and haunting sounds elicited in this trailer.
It is an unfortunate possibility. You have to remember that the editors and musical directors behind a trailer are hardly ever the same people behind the movie. It's why you often see a trailer with a cool song or original score, that may not actually be featured in the film itself.
It could be similar to Danny Elfman

1:26 Somebody needs to make an extended remix/cover off of this. I’d use it for my cartoon trailer but the series won’t be about a character who becomes the Joker and stays stuck as them, they would just be somebody who almost became someone just like the Joker temporarily.
