    This has got to be one of the best, if not the best video - on the subject of ghostwriting, on the Internet. 👍🏽👍🏽

    Here is my situation. I have my book all in my head but the minute i put the pen to the paper nothing. So was looking into getting a ghostwriter. I would like your thoughts on freelance ghostwriters that you can hire though like thumbtack? They charge from 30 to 50 and hr. Which i dont think that is bad.

    • @nonsensefreeeditor
      @nonsensefreeeditor  Месяц назад

      The good thing about Thumbtack specifically is that generally the people you are shown are within your metro area. That reduces (though does not eliminate) the risk of scammers. The per hour charge can sometimes be hard to parse out (for instance, is the ghostwriter using billable hours), but they can usually give you a ballpark amount of what the whole book will cost you

    Great video. I'm a self published Comic book writer/creator. I originally wanted to make a book, but after a few dozen failed attempts (mainly due to my dyslexia), I decided make my idea into a comic book. I've contemplated hiring a ghost writer to bring my original vision into existence. I just don't know where to go, or how involved I would be allowed in the process.

      Adapting a graphic novel isn't exactly ghostwriting and thus might cost less, since the writer is working from completed source material. Though like I say in the video, fiction authors generally don't have the predictable sales that nonfiction authors do, so I'd consider whether it will be worth the financial investment to pay someone to adapt your graphic novel.

    • @noahriding5780
      @noahriding5780 Год назад +1

      If you are combining comic books... which is art, with writing, which is... non-picture art, you'd need to have someone that can do storyboards. And both the artist and the writer if they are different people would essentially be working together through the storyboarding process. So both would need to be able to do this.
      But a lot of people don't do this.

    How do you deal with the predicament that a ghostwriter cannot publicise their work, by definition? Even your clients aren't actually free to wax lyrical about you - as they have had by definition to assume your work as their own.

    • @nonsensefreeeditor
      @nonsensefreeeditor  2 года назад +2

      For me, it’s not a predicament. I’m paid for my work in advance rather than in royalties. As far as reviews, some authors (usually nonfic) admit they used a ghostwriter and give rave reviews.

    So, Its common to pay a ghost writer upfront. What about contracts for percentages?

    • @nonsensefreeeditor
      @nonsensefreeeditor  2 года назад +1

      Honestly, it's very unusual, and for good reason. For the ghostwriter, there's a chance they might not get paid for their time. For the author, they're dispensing royalties to the ghostwriter, which puts the "service for hire" status into question AND reduces the author's ROI.

    Be sure to speak to them to make sure they are a native speaker ? That sounded like “ be sure you don’t get scammed by a “foreigner”. “ they might type better than they speak “ - well, you are hiring a writer not an actor. As long as they have native or professional proficiency , there are advantages of working with bilingual author . As Hanna Arendt pointed out in an interview, a bilingual speaker who writes in their second language, but thinks in both languages, is more likely to avoid cliches and not indulge in this clear but non creative way of writing, the average native speaker has.

    Hi!! Don't know if you could help, but I've got a couple of questions.
    See I've been thinking about hiring a ghostwriter to finalize my first draft. That said, he said he'd offer a discount if I'd credit him. I know that means I add him as my ghostwriter on my dedication page, but my question is, do I add him as my coauthor? Does he get a share of whatever my book may make or is it simply just the dedication page?
    I've just recently got my book series copyrighted, so I'm new to all this stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks for taking the time to read this!!

    • @nonsensefreeeditor
      @nonsensefreeeditor  2 года назад +1

      Eeek! I'd be very careful about crediting your ghostwriter. This could very well put him into coauthor territory meaning he would have a right to royalties. Being a ghostwriter means you don't get credit for your writing. If the ghostwriter has a website that you can leave a positive review on, then by all means. But he can't take credit for your work. Honestly I'd recommend using someone else.

    • @bananatos8929
      @bananatos8929 2 года назад +1

      @@nonsensefreeeditor Really? Jeez I had no idea.. so maybe I won't credit him then! But that aside, just so I'm being out and open with you, when I sent him my work, he said it "wasn't too badly written but could see where there was need for improvement." he said he'd charge around 650$ and it'd take him a little over two weeks to send me the finalized version. All that said again, if I don't go with him, with would you suggest?

    • @nonsensefreeeditor
      @nonsensefreeeditor  2 года назад

      @@bananatos8929 If it isn't too badly written, why the need for a ghostwriter in the first place? Is it just to save time? If you haven't already, it might be a better idea to have a good developmental edit. That includes giving suggestions for how to fix areas where your story falls short. Also, his price is suspiciously low unless he only plans to write about 10k words. I'd proceed with caution

    • @bananatos8929

      @@nonsensefreeeditor Okay so, my problem is making sure it flows, making sure it's properly formated and catching the grammatical errors, (I've been working on this series since junior year in highschool.. which I admit hasn't been since I've graduated from in 2016, so needless to say my writing skills are very rusty) but I have been using grammarly to try and work on it myself. Could it be that he's charging that low cause my book is 163 pages long?

    I really like your approach in teaching us how to deal with each other in business relationships. The points you have made in this video are immensely important and will greatly benefit those who want to express themselves through the written word. So many things that I would love to pick your brain and find out more answers concerning the process.

    How to self edit? Be raised by a linguist and a teacher to be a complete grammar/spelling nazi. Worked for me. Although I would suggest reading the finished work out loud to someone - I'm finally doing that now (post-publish) and finding stupid little errors.

    I did get scammed out of $1,000 with this first ghostwriting. Now I'm with another company I would never pay a ghostwriter $10,000, $15,000, $45,000-$200,000 to write a book for me because authors only make $1.25/month.

    • @nonsensefreeeditor

      Exactly. Ghostwriters should only be used if you have a reasonable expectation of a return on investment. No new author without an existing platform should ever use a ghostwriter
