  • Well, this is the video that finally broke me. I finally verified my YT account so I can upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Thinking about how much good stuff I would have to cut out of this video to get it under 15 minutes, and how long that editing would take me... I couldn't bring myself to do it.

      To give Eleon a little credit: In Alpha 10 they did change constructors to have an "idle mode" so they take a lot less power while not constructing. But other things still consume a lot of power even just sitting there: ventilators, armor lockers, oxygen tanks... So I hope the basic lesson of turning off stuff when you're not using it is still helpful.

    Great tutorial (well except for the bounce but you know that LOL). It's been MANY years since I had to do signal logic but it occurred to me that you could setup sensors around the base to detect your presence and use that to latch the plate on if you're still in the base. Haven't dived at ALL into the signal logic of Empyrion, it's on my "to do list" ;-} But that would be cool, you step on the plate, give it things to do and go elsewhere. Latches on while you're there, and as soon as you leave the base, OFF. Of course, you'd better not SLEEP in the base ...
    Just a thought. Thanks for getting my feet wet on the signal stuff, and the solar info. I've got to debug mine, I'm running on generator right now and when I placed the panels they don't light up. "Capacitor in place and they're attached to the base facing east (only put three then stopped when it didn't work). Just odd ... I guess I'll hit up the Forums for an answer, but thanks again.

    Good intro to the basics, only thing missing was a quick explanation of the solar panel lights for maximum efficiency. Now if there was some way of getting a 'busy processing' signal from the constructor you could feed that into your OR and it would start up as you got it started, keep running until it completed the job, then shut down automatically. Then you wouldn't need a basewide signal. I believe the other way of doing this is to have a 'main switch' on the wall that feeds into a power group - you flick that when you're in base to turn on your hungry machines and off to put it in standby (but running essentials) while you're away.

      I kept having to force myself to say "energy" instead of "power". I know well that kW are power (=energy per time), but if I say "power" then most people will think of something else. I did slip up and say power at least once... Anyway, the point is, solar panels produce POWER and the base consumes POWER. But I had to force myself to say "energy" so a less-technical audience would understand me more easily.

    I'm somewhat new and I have been using the Obelisks to travel to the four moons around Crown and putting a base nearby the Obelisks which all seem to be close to or on the equator. I have been placeing four to six flat panels on the roof of each one and four capacitors as part of one wall. I never run out of power as so much is accumulated during daylight hours there is no loss. nI hae all the usual equipment in them including advanced constructors, med devices and extra cargo boxes and two refrigerators for the food processor.
    Tiip: I have learned the hard way to empty my HV's fridge into the base's fridges so I can shut down my HV when I quit the game. I have tied a few HVs and some have been very disappointing. My goto HV now is the Desert Cat it has never let me down. It's a T2 and expensive, but what makes it so good is the size 2 hover engines and the dual hover boosters. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it has auto miniguns which is really helpful when I am stuck with enemies nearby and in the dark. Because...'BABY THE FREAKS COME OUT NIGHT.

    A good trick I use is making two bases beside eachother, one to run the building/life support and another to run the turret grid. That way your base is really using 30 solar panels, rather than the usual cap of 15 which gives you more electrical headroom.

    Playing 10.6, and I found this helpful. One thing I discovered is that there is a problem having solar and fuel together. Whenever I save the game, exit, and come back later, all the fuel is gone and the lights flicker on and off. Once I get rid of the solar, the problem of fuel draining after logging off stops. Another observation is the screen that had the battery meter. Did they remove that on the latest build, because mine has Pentaxid? Does it matter where I put the compacitors? Trying to figure out why I dont have a battery meter.

    Can the signal logic be utilized to turn on the constructor when you queue something to be built, then turn itself off after the queue is empty? Sounds simple enough on paper, but I don’t know if the queue box itself is a "variable".... great video! Thanks!

    • @AnthonyRossJr1701
      @AnthonyRossJr1701 3 года назад

      @@SaltyPuglord I thought about that because I had noticed if the const was off, you can still tell it to build something and it will hang inside the queue until it has power going to it. So I'm guessing somewhere in the code of the game it treats the queue "box" as a physical item. It's just a matter of finding what the game refers to it as - (without hacking the code because if you change your local game files, you run the risk of it not working with the next update or it has to "validate data" through steam)... then it would just force you to reinstall and be overwritten globally. Definitely one for the developers to add in.

    I'm confused, though. Wouldn't making that signal logic procedure basically just move the off-switch from your constructor to your base control panel, as it's not really automatic either way? I can't see the practical use in it, as it requires you to manually turn off the workstation anyway, but with some nasty visual pollution to the floor because of the pad.

    • @SaltyPuglord
      @SaltyPuglord  5 лет назад

      If you don't like the override signal cluttering up the base control panel, you can do same thing with a switch on the wall next to the ctor.
      And if the pad bugs you, you can use a "motion" sensor (actually a "player present" sensor) placed on the ceiling to get the same effect with so little visual clutter that you'll probably never see it unless you're specifically looking for it.

    This is an excellent design if you want to stand around and look at your food processor, and constructor while it builds things.... yea I know you put a stay on signal in the control panel. Not much use for then plate then huh? Why don't you just place two switches, lights and devices? That way you don't have to go to the control panel and you can turn on/off all the power hungry devices at once. You could even place an LCD over them to to tell you what they were for.

    • @SaltyPuglord
      @SaltyPuglord  5 лет назад +3

      If this setup doesn't suit you and you want to use switches (or something else), that's fine by me. Do what works for you.
      But for me personally, I find that it's quite rare that I need a device to be on when I'm not standing at it. I've *never* wanted my Food Processor or Repair Station to be on when I'm not standing there. And wanting the Ctor to be on when I'm not at it is something that tends to happen only when I'm making a shit-ton of oxygen tanks. And for that, I put a portable constructor (doesn't take power) outside, load it up with a hundred water, and then walk away for a couple days.

    • @potstab2875

      Ah! ok you do a lot of micro task sort of thing I get it now. I do the same with the portable constructor just leave it at the water source with the rest of the system. What i am really keen on seeing and would like a video of if you think it is a good idea. Is to answer some questions about the solar panels. I might put in a stitch for my farm module because of the 2 food processors, because I didn't think they used that much power. Note: A new base placement needs a jump start with a generator to start running the solar capacitor.
      What dose any slight variance on east to west make on power generation?
      How dose using more capacitors benefit the system if any?
      Is being at the equator help and in power generation? If so by how much roughly?
      Do flat panels care about this east west position?
      Can you stack flat panels or angled and or do they block each other?

      I don't know the answers to your questions offhand. And I definitely don't have the time to do the experiments. If you have time, then by all means, try them for yourself.
      The only thing I can tell you is that most of the answers will depend on where on the planet your base is. Planets in Empyrion have axial tilt - one pole is tilted more towards the sun than the other. The closer you get to that sunny pole, the more sense it makes to point your panels towards the equator, instead of east-west. East-west works decently no matter where on the planet you are, which is why I recommended it. But at the sunny pole, a mixture of a few east, a few west, and mostly equator-facing panels is going to work even better.

    What advantage does a ctorforceon signal have if you have to manually shut it off? I would understand the use of the signal circuit if it would automatically turn the constructor off after the crafting que was complete.

    • @SaltyPuglord
      @SaltyPuglord  5 лет назад

      It allow the constructor to be on for long builds, without the player having to stand on the plate the entire time the build is in progress.

      Sure, it's just convenient to have it in the base control panel so you can flip it from anywhere in the base.

    I say one thing, or 3 Great video Great job and i GREAT tutorial. Im useing many solarpanels, located on diffrent parts of planet connected by underground pipes so every moment part of is on ,,dayside" of planet. But your way is easier and less expencive, and your tutorial is so clear even every new (i pray more players discover this epic game) players should understend your explanation. Once again great job.

    So you have to stand in front of your devices or they stop manufacturing stuff? Some things take many minutes to build! Do you really just stand there the entire time?

    what if your constructor is making stuff that takes minuts to do and you step off the plate? will it stop crafting?

    I just started playing again what i want to ask whats the diff of turning off a singal connection and going into the constructor either way you have to turn something off. What i would like to see and im not sure if its in game but having a way to turn it on and when all contruction is done it turns it self off now that would be awesome.

    • @SaltyPuglord
      @SaltyPuglord  3 года назад

      > whats the diff of turning off a singal connection and going into the constructor either way you have to turn something off.
      It depends on what controls the signal. If you use a Pressure Plate or Motion Sensor, then the signal will not just turn on automatically, it will also turn off automatically when you step off the plate / leave the motion sensor area.
      > What i would like to see and im not sure if its in game but having a way to turn it on and when all contruction is done it turns it self off
      Yeah, that's what I've also wanted for about 4 years now too. Eleon has kinda made a move in that direction, with an "idle" state for the Constructor that kicks in after several minutes. The power draw drops down to 100 PU or something like that while in idle. But honestly, that's just silly. The constructor knows when it's done! It should either turn itself off completely, or it should send out a "Done" signal so the player can choose to turn it off completely.

    Playing in version 8.7 and I can't get your signal logic to work for the constructor, standing on the plate works but it won't stay on while it's crafting stuff.

    Man I just set up max panels (24) and I am getting less then a KW and I watch your video and your near 200KW's lol. We are near the south pole on our planet nd are facing our panels north. which is giving us the best so far but still nowhere near what you are getting 4 years ago lol.

    • @SaltyPuglord
      @SaltyPuglord  Год назад

      Well, Eleon could have easily changed the amount of energy that solar panels produce. I mean, they do love to patch Empy every two months.
      Also, I seem to remember that the kind of star your planet orbits, and how close that planet is to the star, will effect your solar panel output too. Not sure if that's a new thing, but I remember Spanj talking about it in a video from a year and a half ago, so...

    • @SaltyPuglord

      The "solar capacitors" (tower things between the solar panels, with blue lights) around 1:17 are the batteries. IDK why Eleon Studios didn't call them "solar batteries"...
