  • Following a thread I heard about through The Digital Gramophone: • I Need Only One Album ... These are ten artists or bands that I really only need one album by. As of today anyway. Some are more set in stone than others. The crazy thing is at couple of these are among my favorite albums of all time. Just don't care too much about their siblings. What are some albums that are all you need by a band/artist?
Oh, and I forgot to include the album cover on one of these. But you probably know what it looks like. I was too busy googling Love.

The Sundays' Reading, Writing & Arithmetic. Just perfect from start to finish and one of my desert island discs. Though I wouldn't want to be without Blind and Static & Silence, just because Harriet Wheeler has one of the most gorgeously ethereal voices ever and could sing the phone book as far as I'm concerned, they definitely don't get anywhere near as much play as that debut, though their cover of Wild Horses has my vote for best ever Stones cover that for pure beauty alone, imho surpases the original.

Agree, that cover is one of the best ever and I also think it's better than the original

I understand what you mean. In my case, I only need one album from:
    Propellerheads (Decksanddrumsandrocknroll)
Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bollocks
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime
The Travelling Wilburys - Volume 1
Refused - The Shape of Punk To Come
Thirteenth Floor Elevator Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds of The Thirteenth Floor Elevators
    Flipper - Album
    Self - Subliminal Plastic Motives
Superdrag - Head Trip In Every Key
Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual

Felt the same way about War on Drugs until the most recent release. I Don't Live Here Anymore feels a bit more diverse and stands out above all their previous releases, including their breakout Lost in a Dream.

I need to give it a proper listen. I did like the single/lead song off that one.

I heard or read somewhere that Dire Straits Brother in arms . CD albums were sold in larger quantities than there were CD players at the time, i.e. 1985

Lately I've started listening to music in hi-res because my new Blu-ray player has support for it

Not a single band here where I say, "Wait! But you need to have this one too!" Definitely would've shown Appetite, but I don't have it on vinyl anymore. I had a reissue, but traded it in. I've definitely whittled down my Iron Maiden collection. I used to have every album from 81-88, but now I only have Number of the Beast, Powerslave, and Live After Death. I still have Neon Bible by Arcade Fire to go with Funeral, but that's it. I loved The Suburbs when it came out, but over time it has lost its effect on me. Don't like any of their albums after The Suburbs. An occasional song maybe. The War on Drugs ruined all their studio output for me when they released their live album - Live Drugs. I still have Lost in the Dream and Slave Ambient, but honestly, I could be satisfied with just the live album. I could've said Tracy Chapman, too. That's the only album I have by her. This was a great response, Todd. Cheers!

I'm with you on (almost) all of these. I've never owned that Cowboys Junkies or any of their records, but I liked what I heard of it. Never bought Chapman either. I know some country guy just covered 'Fast Car.' She probably just made a mint off that. BTW, she did have a mid 90s hit. Can't recall the title right now. Love that Maiden record, but I have the first five studio records, as well. I consider them all essential to my collection. I have a greatest hits from Dire Straits. I've also tried to like them, but have never really embraced them. We are 100% on the same page about Appetite. Amazing album, but never did anything remotely as good afterward. Sex Pistols...there's only really one album. The War On Drugs = 🥱

Killers, Number of the Beast and Powerslave were my faves. They’re a band I’m always a little curious about and have a ton of respect for, but I never really listen to them anymore. Could get on a kick again sometime though. Coolest metal album covers ever.

SACD is also available. the fact is that analog productions and MOFI these days only sell vinyl records and SACD it seems. SACD supports 5.1 sound

If you really had to make tough choices, here are three hot takes. "Wincing the Night Away" by the Shins, "Fantasies" by Metric, and "Nevermind" by Nirvana. All amazing bands with longish careers, but....

I’d probably go with Chutes Too Narrow and In Utero. But yeah, hard to pick sometimes.

I also love 'Caution Horses' by Cowboy Junkies. The way Margot Timmins sings Neil Young's 'Powderfinger' feels like watching a movie in my head. I also love 'Cause Cheap Is How I Feel' with verses like "And the sound of clinking bottles is the one sure thing I'll always drag with me from my past". The whole album has the eerie sound provided by the acoustics of the Trinity Church where it was recorded. As for Dire Straits, I like how they evolved at each album and my favorite is 'Making Movies'. With songs like 'Romeo And Juliet', 'Tunnel Of Love' and 'Skate Away' among others.

regarding Guns N' Roses you have to consider that they were made enough for CDs and CDs have the longer playing time I think the maximum playing time is 74 or 76 minutes on a CD . and we are talking about the 90s. When the CD became really popular. I like Use Your Illusion II

Thanks for the vid. Some tasty treats in there….but I have to disagree on Dire Straits. Their first album “ Dire Straits” is warm and so analogy whereas the later album is a little uneven and overly Pop imo. 👍 Nice job.

Hi 👋 I had the Cowboy Junkies album in the 1980s on vinyl. I enjoyed it, although it is a little sleepy in parts. I have it on cd now. I have a copy of Pump up the Volume movie soundtrack on cd. The Cowboy Junkies do a song on it called Me and the devil Blues. It's really good. I like Tracy Chapman , and i also had her album back in the 1980s. There is a cover version of her song Fast Car on the charts at present. I don't know who sings it , but Tracy's original is the best. Brothers in Arms is good. The song is so beautiful. My sister saw them in concert in the 1980s, and she told me she started crying when they played the song. I liked Punk Rock in the late 1970s. I love Never mind the Bollocks here's the Sex Pistols. 1977 was the year of punk. I saw the lead singer John Lydon with his group Public Image Limited in the 1980s. They played very loud. My favorite punk band are the Damned. I also digged the Stranglers. Thanks for your interesting video. From Carl in New Zealand.
