    It is interesting that Raymond Massey played John Brown in this movie and Abraham Lincoln in "Abe Lincoln in Illinois"

      @joeenglert J.E.B. Stuart is the central character, so the top actor (Errol Flynn) played him. George Armstrong Custer was a secondary character, so Ronnie Reagan was chosen. When the movie "They Died with Their Boots On" was made, only Errol Flynn can play George Armstrong Custer, not Ronnie Reagan.

    The speaker at the beginning of the film is Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. Davis later became the first, and only, President of the Confederacy.

      Since his term was for 6 years and the Confederacy lasted 4 years (1861-65), he had to be the only president .

    Raymond Massey, who plays John Brown in this picture & as Abe Lincoln in "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" in both stage & screen, was a native born Canadian. What's even more interesting the fellow in "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" who played Steven Douglas (Gene Lockhart) was also a native born Canadian.

    Kinda odd that this movie makes the anti slavery crowd look evil and the pro slavery crowd the heroes.

      You hit the nail on the head. Yes, the Golden Age of Hollywood produced many classics I grant you that, and even I enjoy watching them. However, we must remember the attitudes (although inexcusable today) was very different back than.

      @@Dimeropepe yes and they weren’t concerned with historical accuracy to tell a story. John brown was hung two years before Lincoln was president. And custer(Reagan) didn’t graduate West Point until 1861 but other than that another classic Errol Flynn movie

    • @Dimeropepe
      @Dimeropepe 6 месяцев назад

      Yes, it's a Errol Flynn classic. Another is the "Charge of the Light Brigade" (1936). As for this film, yes, they weren't looking for historical accuracy, such as they left out the part that it was a small detachment of U.S. Marines who stormed Harper's Ferry led by Colonel Robert E. Lee. Thank you.@@Mncrr

      Has there ever been a Hollywood movie that portrayed the heroism of John Brown?

      Wasn’t the Hollywood movie companies in the 1930’s and in 1040 run by almost exclusively secular Jews? Nazi’s we’re bad, but confederate slaves owners good? Those hypocrites should be more ashamed but they talk more like proud progressives . Their actions don’t match their rhetoric.

    Stuart, who looked nothing like Errol Flynn, and Custer who, unlike Ronald Reagan had blond hair, were not 1854 classmates and did not serve together in Kansas. Stuart did briefly serve in Kansas and in 1859 was with his former West Point Commandant Lee for the capture of John Brown. The disterous Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 was the primary impetus of the 1854 forming of the GOP by Lincoln and others as the anti-slavery party. Ironically, the 1854 vote on slavery in Kansas was the Democrat’s first use of massive election fraud.

      If a 5th President was added to Mt. Rushmore, it should be Reagan for one reason. He was the first leader of a major power in world history to vanquish his nation’s primary adversary without war. This is one of America’s greatest achievements. Let’s hope it becomes the standard for all future superpowers.
