True, but you still don't expect such a death toll. The people were not properly warned or evacuated, although there were warnings from the German and European weather services. There is currently a huge debate going on about why that happend.
The fact that it's mostly geographical is why many are shocked. Those regions rarely, sometimes never before experienced heavy flooding, and never before of this magnitude. Doesn't help that Germany has neglected its public warning infrastructure for decades, since politicians didn't see the need for a good system after the cold war ended.

The sensationalized reports are misleading, Germany has areas that are experienced with flooding and had dams and infrastructure in place to circumvent that, but that is in areas where snow melting is the cause. This was flooding that occurred because rain that usually falls over a month fell in hours and usually the movement of the clouds that spreads heavy rainfall in summer over a larger area got halted. So it hit areas that never experience flooding and have no infrastructure in place for it. Imagine Japan, the country is very used to earthquakes, but now have another country that never experience earthquakes suddenly get hit. Buildings wouldn't be earthquake proof, people would panic because they have no experience and there is no warning infrastructure or protocols in place. That is essentially what happened here.

Seems like old infrastructure that was not updated for a long time. Climate change is an all to convienient cop out for a lack of preparedness. I hope they improve their flood control measures and i hope they can restore some of those historic buildings.

Anyone building structures anywhere with a quiet little stream running through the middle of their town Beware, There is a tendency to build in the creek & river flood plains in the valleys between mountains where the inevitable comes to bear and that little stream then rears up into a monster. Maybe then people who have been there 3-generations are just in time for a 100 year flood which has nowhere to drain and reclaims it's river plain.

The key is to distribute as much water on a large area that is possible. Right placed animals, vegetation, wet lands and dams are essensial. So in both Europe, USA and Australia and elsewhere in the world. That would give us a lot less storms, heat waves and flooding.

This was flooding that occurred because rain that usually falls over a month fell in hours and usually the movement of the clouds that spreads heavy rainfall in summer over a larger area got halted. So it hit areas that never experience flooding and have no infrastructure in place for it.
Imagine Japan, the country is very used to earthquakes, but now have another country that never experience earthquakes suddenly get hit. Buildings wouldn't be earthquake proof, people would panic because they have no experience and there is no warning infrastructure or protocols in place.

Seems like old infrastructure that was not updated for a long time. Climate change is an all to convienient cop out for a lack of preparedness. I hope they improve their flood control measures and i hope they can restore some of those historic buildings.

Anyone building structures anywhere with a quiet little stream running through the middle of their town Beware, There is a tendency to build in the creek & river flood plains in the valleys between mountains where the inevitable comes to bear and that little stream then rears up into a monster. Maybe then people who have been there 3-generations are just in time for a 100 year flood which has nowhere to drain and reclaims it's river plain.
Exactly why everyone lived beside streams in West Virginia because the smart people built on the expensive land is not in the flood plain lol

Look all over the world Australia almost burnt completely last year, I'm in NC and a hurricane hung over my state for DAYS and we got flooding where it never floods. Hurricanes never hang over places for days but this one did it baffled scientist. The world is changing thanks to the damage from humans.
@@justin01144 In Europe there's uneven distribution of vegetation that means a lot of more water ways to build up in steep bare terrain because of rain/percepitation and wood logging and other removel of much vegetation; with more beavers there would be more gradual removel of trees and rapid aftergrowth, and so more wetlands and dams that both keep delaying water to leave an area, more wildlife and biodiversity to spread out the use of water. The key is to distribute as much water on a large area that is possible. Right placed animals, vegetation, wet lands and dams are essensial. So in both Europe, USA and Australia and elsewhere in the world. That would give us a lot less storms, heat waves and flooding.
