Steve Mellish Armchair Jockeys examines the unique challenge of the Triple Crown and looks back at the last previous horse to achieve this feat, Nijinsky.
Not really . Between The first week in May and ending in September, The English Triple Crown is run over 3 different distances ( 8f , 12f and 14f ) , over very different types of racecourse , which test the horses ' speed , stamina and endurance , whereas, in the space of a few weeks , the American Triple Crown is run over 2 distances ( 10f and 12f ) . For those reasons , the English Triple Crown is much more difficult feat to achieve .
@@ThefightingCelt I agree, the English triple crown is harder to achieve,., but sadly its a thing of the past, with so many other alternative races, in particular the arc. I've no doubt sea the stars was the one that got away, difficult to imagine him not winning the leger, if they'd had went for it
The American triple crown has been so watered down from what it originally was that I don’t even consider it a triple crown anymore…..not like the American triple crowns that were achieved up until 1978. There was no point system garbage. It went on earnings. It’s harder for a top class sprinter to gain a berth into the Kentucky derby these days because of the point system. Through the decades, top sprinters have spoiled many derby and triple crown aspirations but that’s how it was supposed to be….extremely difficult to impossible to achieve. Today, they manufactured two triple point system winners to attract new fans and to satisfy the current fans who never got to see one. Come on, American Pharoah and Justify ???? They’re just not in the same league at the first 11 real triple crown winners. Sports in the United States, in general, suck really bad today. Can’t watch any of it anymore.
Yes, in America speed is everything in everything. Most races here are run at a mile and a quarter at most, when the used to be run at 12f and more. Speed records are a big thing here. It is the only reason some people think Secretariat was the greatest horse ever, because his times in the TC races. The Jockey Club Gold Cup was 2 miles when Citation won it in 1948, and stayed there until in the 1970's it was lowered to 1-1/2 miles, then 1-1/4. I have stopped watching American racing. The Continent and Australia are much more fun to watch...
I have always loved the horses that run over 2m in UK , they come back year after year & you get some amazing finishes & you can't help falling in love with the old warriors , they might not be the most valuable but unlike their faster brethren they are not shipped off to stud as soon as they have a brilliant 3 yr old career
Camelot proved later he wasn't in same class as nijinsky. If a horse ever does win triple crown again , it has to be a superstar , like nijinsky was.....
Such a pity for Camelot and his connections that a horse previously banned because of anabolic steroid abuse , namely ENCKE, was allowed to take part in a Classic.
@@horseracingstuff i backed Encke to beat Camelot i never felt Camelot was the champion he was bigged up to be , it was a poor 3 yr old crop that year i felt
This is misleading and in these days of gender equality, not correct. There has been a horse that has achieved the revered " Triple Crown " since Nijinsky..." Oh So Sharp " in 1985. She won the 1,000 guineas (female 2,000 gns ), the Oaks ( female Derby ) and then the St Leger itself. I would argue that is even harder to achieve as she had to beat the colts in the St Leger to complete the final leg. Thought that would at least get a mention in this programme, she was some Filly. They go on and on about " Enable " and she too is a special lady, but to ignore " Sharpy "!?. She was the girl for me.
The American triple crown has been watered down into a point system circus. It’s pathetic…that was done to ensure a triple crown winner every decade. It’s garbage now. The first 11 triple crown winners win their triple downs on their own abilities. Number 12 and 13 had a point system and a drug trainer to help them. Also, number 13 had to be retired immediately after the Belmont Stakes due to severe soundness issues and number 12 raced older horses only once at Santa Anita and like number 13, he had to be immediately retired after that race for a total of about 7 lifetime starts. Give me a break with these Baffert drug runners.
The English Triple Crown is much harder to achieve than the American equivalent.
ThefightingCelt mhhhmmm
They’re so different that they are impossible to compare

Camelot just another horse that carries the bloodline of Northern Dancer on both the sire and dams side
These guys are great - thx for sharing on RUclips!
All great athletes have stamina. You gotta have speed but when you are pushed you can't give out.
Nijinsky born in oshawa Canada
The son of the greatest sire of the 20th century also born in Oshawa Canada . The great Northern Dancer

i wish camelot has raced against frankel.
Why ?? If it was a mile Frankel would of murdered him & Frankel would never of got the Derby distance
Nijinsky was far superior to Frankel.

El Padre de todos los Sangre Pura de Carrera. Nijinsky.

Encke was banned well after the St Leger and had passed drugs tests beforehand.
