  • Two different versions put together, rather strange editing... and I have my doubts about the correctness of the pitch!
Taken from a very interesting documentary on Stanislav Neuhaus (1927-1980) written and produced by Irina Lebleu, directed by Vladislav Bykov.

Stanislav Neuhaus was definitely the best Chopin player, I ever heard. Such sensitivity!

Ты что парень не слышишь,что он играет ,а не ,,живёт" этим произведением, кто твои педагоги,не сомненно ,что Генрих великий,но мы же все знаем не всегда от отца к сыну,как раз вариант идеально научили!

Strange editing, indeed! But a positively glorious performance--I especially loved his treatment of the middle section--such effortlessness and sense of freedom, but always within Chopin's perimeters, though he does seem to be playing the piece in B minor!

@soami2u Totally agree with you! The son of Heinrich Neuhaus should be more known in the West, his playing was fabulous.

I was watching a full copy of the second and it's supposed to have been recorded in 1976

@ADGO I've been trying to find a full copy of the last one. Do you know where I can find it?

What a fascinating piece of film footage. Excellent playing, although the 1979 performance seems somehow riper and more considered than the 1956 one - maybe maturity has its place! It's interesting too that he is playing a Förster piano in the later video - this company made some very fine instruments. (As an older man I was struck by his resemblance to ... Quentin Crisp!!)

@paulprocopolis I guess that the tempo of the earlier recording is somewhat faster than what he actually did here...maybe that's why the pitch is also higher?
