  • Chief Pilot AJ Decoste is flying up the Mackenzie Valley with Buffalo’s newest Electra, XFC, for the first time. Mechanic Cory Dodd is along for the ride to do some training as a Flight Engineer. They try to make their deliveries before a storm rolls in but when they land in Norman Wells, they are faced with gale force winds. When their takeoff is delayed by two incoming planes, AJ is forced to shut down and wait out the storm in Norman Wells. Later, on their approach to Tulita, they face even stronger winds gusting over 40 knots. Over in Hay River, things go from bad to worse when a warm weather system brings the threat of a rare ice storm. Two daily skeds arrive from Yellowknife and the rampies have to batten down the DC-3s in preparation for a long, rough night-the worst storm in fifty years. And the newest rampie, CJ Asaf, just can’t seem to fit in. Rampie Prefkar is tasked with training CJ on the Hay River delivery route, but Prefkar can’t handle CJ or his attitude.

The weather in Hay River during this video is extreme. Hats off to those who make it happen in those conditions.

CJ just isn’t use to working since he came from a wealthy family. He expected he would get to get in an airplane fast without paying his dues first. With the kind of work they do and the weather they experience it seems to me that they need a couple more hangers to keep the planes dry and ice free.

I was a Window and Door tech for one of the biggest window and door manufactures in Western Canada. I was at a customers house with 2 helpers and we were carrying a 400 plus pound sealed unit up some stairs. The 2 helpers dropped the window and I took all the force and tore the tendon in my right shoulder. That pc of glass broke but we had another one for the next unit. Well here I am lifting a 400plus lb sealed unit with my right arm only because the job needed to be done. I got home and my wife was so pissed because I stayed at work to finish the job. I don't wanna hear about a little bruise from a rampy. That happened in 2013 and now I am on permanent disability because i did so much damage.

@@MarkK01 exactly, they would have been laughed out of the primary industry where I live. I’ve worked around so many people like that during my life and all they do is make it harder for everyone else on the job while they sit there with nothing more than a little bruise or minor scratch. Hope you’re doing better now. Good luck!

Thank goodness I won't have to fly anywhere on any airline for the rest of my life; my traveling days are over and done with. "...But the frost-fighter is in the shed, and the shed doors are frozen shut." Ever think of setting things up overnight so the doors will _not_ freeze shut? It's just one thing after another, and it seems like no one is thinking ahead. I cannot believe Buffalo Airlines is taking chances like this. Flying anywhere with any possibility of ice forming like they described is a recipe for deadly disaster. You might praise the crews for doing great stuff, but I would not want to fly with an outfit that operates on the ragged edge of danger like this.

There's only so much room available. Would be nice and likely preferable by a quite a few people, but just not an option in Yellowknife. It isn't fricking Seattle!

Wouldn't the Lockheed Electra (even though it was built in the late 1950's) be equipped with an analog-computed control that adjusts power settings continuously and automatically to optimize the flight profile to match conditions? Having an engineer crouched over throttle controls seems ridiculously out-of-date, a downright primitive way to accomplish the job, especially in flaky conditions. Maybe I'm expecting too much for the technology of that time, but, somehow, I do not think so.

In the 1950s electronics were run by vacuum tubes which can be power hungry and very sensitive to temperature.

My biggest complaint with this series is the extremely irritating noise in the foreground. It's like trying to watch the program on tv at the same time as someone playing some heavy metal shit at high volume on a radio and junior pounding on his drum set. I would like to hear the guys talking on their mikes and the sound of the plane engines. I guess maybe this program noise is geared for a bunch of drug attics.💩
