In the original Mario if you go through the secret pipe too fast it takes you to a broken level, which contains water and would be faster
With glitches, you can also touch water in Super Mario World faster than this.

There is always water in the atmosphere. Clouds are, of course, the most visible manifestation of atmospheric water, but even clear air contains water - water in particles that are too small to be seen.

Folks, I think they mean the elements as the Greeks knew them, also like in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Water, Earth, Fire, Air

Source: I snuck into OP's brain by doing the classic "Hi-vis vest + clipboard to act like a construction worker" trick and saw it
0:39 if you take the 3 pipe, you can enter 3-1 where there's a small pond and touch water slightly faster.

fun fact: in the first Mario bros you can clip through the wall in the level 1-2 all u have to do is clip through where the worp pipes are and go through the first pipe u see and bam u touched water

And in Paper Mario, you have to wait until Chapter 5 before you get Sushie and can touch water, in TTYD, you can touch it as soon as the game starts, don't remember for the other games.

Ever since I was a kid, I've always immediately sought out water in every game so this pleases me. I love water.

if you would have used the secret exit in New Super Mario Bros. Wii that leads to World 5, you would have been able to touch water in 5-1, which is a lot quicker

Someone already said it, but all you have to do now is make dangerous memories/stories and touch fire

In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario can breathe in space, but not underwater.
