OMG - it's shocking to see what the fires did. The little cabins were so special - under a blanket of big mature fir trees. The trees are all gone! Looks like the bath houses were burned down as well. Extremely sad - but I'm glad they saved the big hall or whatever it's called. I think you forgot to mention how good the food is. First time in my life I had tofu and LOVED it. My favorite pool is the silent pool that you were able to film. Soaking and listening to the river = pure heaven! BTW - I met Dan Milliman (spelling?) at Powells - I've read The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior several times - but I must say I like the second book, can't remember the name, where he is in Hawaii. Thank you for filming as much as you could of Breintenbush. It's almost unrecognizable.

I became involved with that movement, which took me back to Breitenbush a number of times. It was a center of old growth activism, one of the gestation points of the movement which indeed did shut down much of the old growth logging. I haven’t been back in a number of years, but I am glad to see the recovery from the fires.
Call before you go if you want to soak. Need a day pass. Lodging options as well. Note, they do fill up in the Summer and host private conferences and such so make sure you get reservations! Amazing place.
You can ramble on as much as you want, love your stories! Absolutely beautiful area, shame about the fires, but there are still a lot of trees remaining and is lovely and green. At least the main lodge survived. We get fires in Australia and know how devastating they can be, especially for wildlife as well as the environment. The environment is SLOWLY recovering. It use to be one of greenest freshest, wildest stunning places on Earth. Now, ugh, I can’t even go back yet. Thanks for the video. Also, the Land grab for old growth trees was excessive. Don’t be fooled. Breightenbush profited greatly from this land grab money maker. They are always crying broke. Now the prices, $178.00 a night for a cabin? No way.
I so enjoyed this video. As an Oregonian I have been to Brighten Bush many times but did not have the heart to visit lately due to the fire damage. I live in Salem and managed to only get as far as Mill City one day but the devastation was just too sad to see. I do remember hearing the news that the lodge was spared and we were all over joyed to hear that. It looks so different there but all of us that love the Cascades we are thankful that it will come back and people are rebuilding. ❤❤❤
Hi Gabriel, an amazing retreat I'm sure you have many things to contemplate. I do think many places don't like too much publicity for reasons that visitors might overrun these locations and cause havoc while other places feel like they can't get enough visitors. The strange thing about fires is they rejuvenate the forest they provide regrowth you can see some deforestation on the premises but I'm sure that's all managed by replanting and reseeding.

I ended up working in Jasper National Park from 2008 to 2014 which was a great area. Unfortunately it just burned down, so won't be going back there anytime soon. And I love the Greek islands so that's somewhere I could imagine living. But for now I'm traveling pretty much full-time.

Oregon is beautiful along the coast. If you ever go to NJ, visit Swaminarayan mandir, incredible, like a tall cathedral, sculptured marble up, down, all sides, nothing like it in US till now.

Unfortunately, at that time, there wasn’t enough housing to live there even though I was offered the job. It’s a magical place for sure.

I notice the Pinebark Beetle is killing Lodgepole Pines in Oregon, was in Rocky Mountain NP last summer and they are hit hard out there. Coincidence that I'm heading to Glenwood Springs next week, think it costs $59 for access to all the pools, not sure if that is the full day or just a 3 hour time slot, think 3 hours.
I don't know why, maybe it's because the weather seems quite gloomy, but the place strikes me as a great setting for a horror or mystery movie. I'd feel kind of uneasy to be looking round there at this time of year. Spooks me.
I love getting out in nature, camping, outdoorsy stuff. But I just find this a little bit weird. I think it was the "there was a didgeridoo music group thing going on." And all the mention of meditation and stuff. Each to their own, everyone has their own likes and interests, Im not putting anything down. Just mentioning how I feel for I dont know what reason. For me, nature, getting outside is about being adventurous, energetic, having a beer at the end of a long day of some sort of excersize, with singing and patying. This place sounds like it has too many rules for my liking.
Hey Gabriel, I spent a lot of time at Harbin Hot Springs in Northern Ca. in the 1990's, (long before its wildfire destruction and re-build). Breitenbush reminds me of Harbin...I wonder if you have ever gone to Harbin and if so, how would you compare it to Breitenbush. If not, then check it out. I cannot speak for it today, but when I went there it was less expensive and meals were more flexible-they had a small market and a restaurant that was optional. So, ever been to Harbin? Has a similar vibe to Breitenbush...but neither place is Cappadocchia 😊
Yes, I've been to Harbin a few times. I think Breitenbush is a lot nicer, more pools to choose from of different temperatures and I like the setting more.

Brightenbush is an old hippy commune--the early hippies learned to get their legal rights to maximize their profits. They are aggressive in their management style--they rule the place with an iron fist. The rules are overwhelming, but you follow the rules or get the hell out. I was never comfortable there.
Ive wanted to hike up there for awhile now. I drove that road once long way in after detroit i think. I have not seen detroit since the fire. That fire was gnarly 2020 lionshead fire. Gabe the morels will be popping up soon there. I have never been a fan of hotpsprings. Slimy smelly egg water. Meh.
It depends a lot on the hot spring, the ones at Breitenbush don't smell like sulfur or anything else. I agree, when they have the sulfur smell it's not as enjoyable.

The second book was great as well, he actually went to the island of Molokai, which I went to recently.

There used to be concrete tubs and changing area down the river bank from the lodge. Are they still there? They were the main hot tubs at the time.
