- Once I saw someone else using their iPad as a second monitor I knew I had to figure out how to do it. So in this tip and trick, here's how to use your iPad as a second monitor for your Windows PC or Mac computer.

$20/year? GTFO. These subscription services are getting more and more out of hand. The wireless feature should be a one-time purchase.

Decided to try and set up my iPad Pro as a 3rd monitor to my ThinkPad X1 Extreme laptop (2nd monitor is an hp curved screen tabletop...definitely NOT mobile). I used the Splashtop Wired XDisplay app because I am a grad student and always pinching pennies. After a bit of work through and self-troubleshooting, I got it to work...beautifully!! This will be great to have my iPad Pro as a 2nd monitor when on campus or traveling. Thank you for the info and tips TheUnlockr!! Awesome!
FYI- If you are running macOS 13.xx Ventura, you can simply add the iPad as another monitor from settings/ display, as long as handoff is enabled on both devices. Works more consistently than connecting via bluetooth menu where mine simply refused to connect calling it "not allowed" for a brand new iPad Pro and mbp16. Also, you can add multiple iPads this way, if you need to to give yourself more workspace... if you are say, working at a hotel for a few days trapped, like I was recently. Nice vid and very straight forward. kudos!
Hey I tried this but I keep getting an error code.(-6709). Been trying connect many ways but it just won’t budge.
@@BETOCHIVAS7 it sounds as if you might have missed turning on “hand off to other devices” on either the ipad or the macOS device. Double check that, as well that you are on macOS 13 (Ventura) and ios, (16.3.1). Finally, this will not work with older ipads. I am not sure which model it stops at but I have connected a mbp16 (2021) to a brand new ipad pro 12.9 (4th gen) with no issues. I have also successfully connected while already connected (wired) to (2) 27inch apple 2k displays (linked) and a third acer 25inch lcd monitor just to test the limits of the video card.

@@julyreverie as long as its on the latest ios version and your mac is on Monterey it should, yes. That also supports “mouse over” where you put an ipad near your mac and you can move you mouse over to it like an additional monitor and manage any local apps you have running like music or chat programs.

@@c0vinsky There is a lack of “smoothness” when I connect my devices. Even if I were to set the frame rate to 60fps, the actual frame rate is below that ratio. As for the input lag, the most I would see is the brief but occasional frame freeze when video playback is displayed on my iPad. I’m not too bothered by these issues, however. I’m just happy to have the convenience of not having to alt-tab between windows/programs all the time. 😄
@@c0vinsky yeah, it's like 20-25 fps with the lowest resolution. suitable for text reading without scrolling or having video on the background. Typing, scrolling, etc makes your eyes hurt in an hour. making its better quality makes fps even less.
didnt notice ANY difference with free xdisplay when wired
i know it's been 8 months but how is the cpu usage? because on splashtop is like 15-20% sometimes with high quality and high framerate
@@guillembz Duet's CPU usage runs at 0.5-2% for me, even on maxxed out settings. I haven't heard of Splashtop before. What sort of experiences have you had with that particular program/app?

Well this company got excessively greedy. Everything is on a payment plan now with the minimum cost of 30 dollars a year. Might aswell get a cheap second monitor at that point.

30usd is extremely cheap
$30 a year is expensive. In 5 years that's $150. You could get a used monitor from a garage sale for $20-40.
If it was a one time payment, maybe it'd be reasonable

on my MacBook Air my airplay setting is only on OFF. I tried changing it to ON but it does not let me.

I was able to use my iPad as a second screen without being connected to the same WiFi. I am just logged in to the same Apple ID on my MacBook Air (2019) and iPad Pro (2020).

Great Video. There is another solution. I use "Yam Display" (Mac+iOS install) via lightning cable with an iPad mini gen. 1 (!) . There is also a wireless version I think.

Trying to the airplay i connected my apple id to my mac and it just shows “looking for apple tv” and nothing else

Thanks for this video. For me... this seems to only work if you have wifi enabled on your mac mini on, rather than having them both on the same network, through say ethernet on the mini, and wifi on the ipadpro. It's a bit of a clunky setup, when you need to be connected to the lan through eth for your workflow, rather than wifi just to see if the ipad will work too. Oh well. I'll keep trying. :)

My iPad doesn’t show up in the AirPlay section
Mine neither. But I clicked on the bluetooth icon / open bluetooth preferences and I found it. Alternatively you can search your Mac on your iPad and connect.
@@jtanaami hey! I found the Ipad with bluetooth preferences, my mac and ipad are now connected together, but what do you do next?... I can't seem to figure that out....
Sunshinevante on your Mac go to System Preferences, Displays, AirPlay Display. You should be able to see your iPad there. Select your iPad and that should solve your problem. To disconnect, select Off from the same drop down menu.

According to Apple, Sidecar only works with 2016 or newer Macbook Pro's.

How do you get the displays to match when mirroring? My Mac ends up with fuzzy bars on both sides.
Usefull and honest video! Some creators don’t tell you the actual stuff you need to know about duet. I bought duet and now I’m stuck with a shitty free version of it which it will not let me use PS or Illustrator. Don’t buy it!

I've got Duet Air but I can't say I'm satisfied. The quality is not that good, and if I use a higher res the stuff on the screen is too small. I couldn't even read the words.

This is an absolute scam now. 50 plus a year. A one time 10 dollar purchase was reasonable. But now its robbery. No longer a worthwhile video, might as well delete it.

Is AirPlay an app you download? I followed the steps until you click on the airplay icon but my Mac doesn’t have one

I used Duet for a while (paid the $10 for the iOS app) between my Lenovo T470s and iPad using the cable method. It was super flaky to connect, it never did it reliably. I ended up just not using it anymore.
Same experience, terrible app, every Mac update stopped it working.

The response to writing using a stylus pen on the ipad is extremely slow. I wonder using Duet Pro or Duet Air will help. Any comments?

Hi. I heard that with ipad you cant use office apps the same as efficiently as with a computer. If I use it as a display like said in this video, will I be able to use Word or Powerpoint with all normal features?

All the fees, especially the yearly subscription is a negative.
Another product might examine for Mac & ipad... Mac to Mac or Mac to iPad and retain iPad touch in Mac is Luna Display. Not free, but one time cost.
Tried this one and never worked.
From my experience Splashtop DOES NOT work. I downloaded the apps on both devices, but it doesn't work. The desktop app failed to even open.

Bluetooth pairing on my Corporate MBP appears to not be supported. I'm guessing duet does not require icloud, blurletooth, etc and is installed on my personal iPad, not the laptop, correct?

Hi, I am wondering what if my PC is a desktop that does not come with the WIFI option? is it still possible for me to connect my desktop with my IPAD wirelessly? I thought the WIFI is connected with the same IP as my desktop so the duet should be able to detect the device but I attempted to connect the two devices manually but failed.
Are there any apps that don't require an app to be loaded to the PC? Trying to use this for a work machine that I'm not authorized to load software on.
