People don’t realize how difficult it is to actually finish a layout. Great job on this Steve and the passenger views are amazing, would love to see a short video of that alone for 5 minutes, it was stunning!
Beautiful layout, and the last shot stole the show- a masterful marriage of modeling, staging, cinematography, music and editing. This what inspires others to create.
Steve, you have built the layout of my dreams. I have enjoyed following your magnificent creation. Your willingness to show absolutely all the details and methods is greatly appreciated. You have inspired me to get my 72-year old hands and eyes to settle down and get busy. It will take me a while, but it will be done. Thanks.
This turned out fantastic, Steve! I love the autumn colors. That's not something we see often enough on model railroads. I've been watching a lot of your videos of your small layouts to get inspiration for building my own in a very small space. I'm really impressed at how much you can fit in with N scale, and what I love most about your layouts is how they've got tracks and roads at different elevations. I live in eastern Pennsylvania where nothing is flat, so these layouts appeal to me more than many of the track plans I see for flat layouts. Nice job!
The camera view reminded me of my first ride (and eventual love) of a rollercoaster at a place called Waldameer in Erie, PA. Thanks for sharing and allowing me a chance to ride a coaster once again.
What a masterpiece of the layout, the autumn colours are beautiful and it of course looks great from a distance, but that shot of the passenger window give such beautiful small town America vibes, it seems like something you would've seen in a movie back when they were filmed with models. Literally the peak modeling there when something so small looks so absolutely real.
Thanks for a nice layout and an absolutely terrific video that actually shows it "top-down", i.e. both an overview so one understands what's going on and then focus on the beautiful details. There are so many clips that only does one of those.
Quintessentially American layout but brilliantly done! And I love the mini camera cab ride view. Using the cab view camera puts extra pressure on the model up to achieve a 360° scale world - i’m afraid I just wouldn’t have the patience to model perfectly (a goal?).
That turned out great. I like N scale because you can fit so much in to small space. Thanks for some great ideas. HAPPY THANKSGIVING 🦃 GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
Beautiful modeling, and really nice video work too, especially the passengers eye view. I love it when a model railroad looks like a world that you could believe in.
Really handsome layout Steve. I suspect the video hasn't captured all the details you've included - it's probably great to see in person. The autumnal colours and the blue intermodal containers are fantastic. Happy Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving! Hopefully a family dinner. Sir, you are truly an artist and design engineer. Your vision and craftsmanship on that layout is exceptional.
You do ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL work when it comes to trains! You put so much passion and effort into your projects. Even though you like doing the smaller sized layouts it still looks AMAZING! Thanks for sharing your videos and I'm viewing them from the 1st state of Delaware.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Steve! Thanks for sharing your railroad construction journeys, the how-to's and the end products with us. I am thankful to those of you who take the time and opportunity to share your expertise and artistry to educate those of us trying to learn. Absolutely beautiful and I loved the onboard POVs!
Another great railroad Steve. I have followed along and it looks and runs great. The view from the train was awesome, might have to look into one of those small cameras. Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving.
Steve, Once again, Great job! Of course you realize a layout is never truly complete, is it. How did you finally deal with wire management and what is the next project your thinking about?
Wire management isn’t ideal since I ended up adding things I hadn’t originally planned on, so just lots of terminal strips and trying to run wires as neatly as possible.
I have lots of maps. I bought those almost 20 years ago. I have an OK map on the left, the North America one in the middle, I don’t remember what projection it is, and the global one on the right with a big US topographic map on another wall not visible. The North America one shows political boundaries with the colors you see showing elevations.
Do you ever get bored with the loops? That's the one thing that I absolutely don't want on my future layout. I'd take that amount of space and make a huge industrial park to switch, linked to a barge to pull from.
Layout looks great! I really enjoy seeing what you can fit into such a relatively small space. I’m curious, and maybe you’ve done a video on this already, but why do you use Digitrax over let’s say NCE?
That was the system requested by the person I built the layout for, and that is the system I'm most familiar with in terms of setup, accessories, etc. Like the boxes that control the turnouts and such and allow for operation by both push button and from the throttle itself.
Wow I love the layout! Excellent cab view video... So, the temporary background around the edge of the layout is green screen? Or is it cardboard with sky and clouds?
So I used the green screen first but I couldn’t set the color keying precise enough in final cut pro (my lighting wasn’t even enough in many cases) to where it wouldn’t do wonky things like make some scenery disappear or things like that. So I went over to Michaels and picked up several sheets of poster board that had clouds on them and taped them around the layout for the cab view videos.
Hello Steve. Great job. That’s a beautiful layout. Thanks for sharing. The cab rides were great. One question/thought, I noticed your walls are green. You could create any panorama you wanted to, using a green screen effect. Was this your plan? I look forward to future updates. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Take care. Bye.
I had a green screen on a stand that I used and in some of the shots I used it show a black background (the layout is in the garage so there is stuff in there) but on a couple scenes I couldn’t key the color properly such that it wouldn’t also wipe out part of the scenery. In retrospect, a blue screen might work better. A big issue was light reflecting off the green screen onto other features, plus some of the scenery being green, plus the green LEDs on the signals being a near perfect match to the green screen color. I just started using Final Cut Pro recently to edit the videos and I know I can still use the video with the green screen to swap out different backgrounds but I just need to get better and dialing in the color and masking out different areas. It just didn’t look great on some of those clips so I removed the keying so it would show the green screen. I would have some goofy things like a tree suddenly vanishing or whatever and then coming back.
I am starting to plan a new small N scale layout and this is great inspiration! That is a really nice background you have; may I ask where you got that?
So I know this question doesn’t really pertain to this vid but…. Feeder wires. I see tons of vids of how to solder them to the track and so far NONE on what to connect them too. (Where does the bus line origionate? Also…. Could I just splice another couple powered retailers to the control box? Sorry for the misplaced question. Just throwing out a line and see if I get any bites!
Basically you are just trying to connect all the feeder wires together and then connect it to your DCC system/power supply/throttle/whatever. A set of bus wires is just a heavier gauge set of wires from your DC/DCC track power supply to which you connect all your feeders. You could simply connect all your feeders together and connect them directly to the power supply. It is simply just a matter of trying to manage all the wiring so you don’t end up with a rats nest of wires under the layout. There are other benefits to having the bus wires as well as thicker wire will have less voltage drop over a long distance than thin wire will, but in practice that only matters for larger layouts.
@@StevesTrains thanks so much! That’s what I THOUGHT, but wasn’t sure. I think I’ll def need to upgrade my power supply, as I’ve found the one that comes with the Bachman starter set has its own plug style AND has no auxiliary output for power turn outs. That said, I’m sure I’ll end up with one around a tree at Christmas time, and I’ll Just use that then! Again, thanks for the info, and the great content. Excited to get back into this, for the kids, of course…… :-)
I am new to your channel so pardon me if this is a stupid question, do you sell these completed layouts? I don't mean the plans but the entire layout that you built including everything.
Most of the layouts I build, like this one, are built for other people. I’ll build some for myself, my current layout is a 1x6 HO scale switching layout. Sometimes I’ll just build a layout for fun and sell it, but I have a multi-year list of layouts people have requested I build so that ends up being most of my projects at this point.
@@StevesTrains thank you I appreciate your response, I'm just getting into the hobby I might have to figure out costs, I'm aware that once you start you want to add things so I thought maybe buying a 3x5 would save me time and money. Once again thank you so much for your response and I have subscribed.
The problem with these plans is a lot of them use N Kato Unitrack 20-070. Straight 1.79" and N Kato Unitrack 20-071. Straight 1.14". After an exhaustive search I found these CAN NOT be purchased. So how would someone build using a track plan with parts that are unavailable? If these can be found PLEASE post a link. Thank you.
Those pieces are currently only sold as part of the small track assortment that is available like this one: amzn.to/3cUEMiX or this one: www.modeltrainstuff.com/kato-n-20091-straight-track-assortment-unitrack-10/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA7oyNBhDiARIsADtGRZZvbwdRe4SgB3_8nUBqDf6mK8lugzPU_pfgzn9VKx4CWj109ZclcAsaAv_1EALw_wcB all pieces used are available and sometimes part numbers change, so just search by track length or radius if you can’t find it by part number as that should usually work.

Are u gonna be at the okc train show

I am in the "Micro/Small Model RR Layouts" group
A+
