    I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation on Myrna loy. Her profile was just as famous as John Barrymore's. She always had a delightful speaking voice and when she Co-Starred with William Powell in "The Thin Man" series you could always count on her doing the unpredictable with a delightful nuance, that epitomized and was completely Myrna.

    Libeled Lady, The Great Ziegfeld, and all of the Thin Man series, Test Pilot, Wife versus Secretary, and Manhattan Melodrama are on the top of my list for my favorite Loy movies. However I do have a secondary list. She was a fun actress even when she played bad women.

    I wish people discussing the 1930s stars wouldn't omit to mention Leslie Howard. He was a huge star. Loy stared alongside Leslie Howard in the Animal Within, and they even had a fling. Howard lost his life due to his work for the Allies, but because he died honourably for his tireless work against the Nazis no one mentions him. It makes me really sad that his heroism excludes him from mention as a major movie and stage actor.

    • @HollywoodMysteries
      @HollywoodMysteries  7 месяцев назад +6

      Hi, we love Leslie Howard and are already planning a video dedicated to him. Stay tuned!

    • @kerryhorwitz4093
      @kerryhorwitz4093 7 месяцев назад +6

      @HollywoodMysteries Will do! It is kind of upsetting that so many people leave mention of Leslie Howard out. I even saw something on Bogart, and they said his sons name was Leslie Howard Bogart and didn't say who Leslie Howard was or why Bogart would name his son after him! The reason is a delight of humility and gratitude.
      What really upsets me, though, is there can be no doubt that Leslie Howard threw himself into the war effort. When he made Pimpernel Smith he as good as signed his death warrant. After about 18 months of the films release, his plane was taken down by the Luftwaffe. This was perhaps a reflection of Nazis perversity. Leslie Howard had produced, directed, and starred in The First of the Few (US title: Spitfire 1943). The story of R.J. Mitchell who designed the first of these planes. The name refers to Winston Churchills' famous words of respect to the men of the Royal Airforce who fought in the Battle of Britain. Their determination, skill, and courage had a powerful impact on the subsequent Allied victory.
      "Never was so much owed by so many to so few."
      ~ Winston Churchill
      The Nazis killed Howard in a plane crash.
      People nowadays are so cynical they can't understand that a man really would "give up his life for his friends." Leslie Howard can be clearly seen through the lens of history as a man of honour. He had just made Gone with the Wind (which he really didn't want to do). He could easily have sat the war out in the USA. He didn't. In those days, you couldn't go back to England if you had shares in a foreign interest. He had shares in Gone with the Wind. It was a major hit and was obviously going to be a honey pot for anyone with shares.
      Leslie Howard went back to England to throw himself into the war effort. To do so, he sold his shares to Zanuck for $20,000.
      Leslie Howsrd had learned a painful but valuable lesson from his experience in WW1. He was not a soldier in the traditional sense. He was rather swiftly invalided out with neurasthenia (probably shell shock). This diagnosis could have been a little embarrassing as neurasthenia was known to be a 19th-century women's ailment.
      When he entered the WWII war effort, he used the skills he actually had to fight. He was a major star, respected actor, exquisite public speaker, and a very experienced man in all aspects of the movie making business.
      These were the weapons he used.
      The Nazi chief of propaganda, Goebals, noted that Leslie Howard was the greatest tool of propaganda the Allies had. Howard didn't simply make films. He would travel to neutral countries and give speeches and no doubt had meetings trying to persuade such countries to weigh in with the Allies.
      This was what he was doing in Portugal when his plane was shot down over the Bay of Biscay on June 1st, 1943.
      I'm sure you know he was somewhat easy with his ... er... virtue. A favoured mistress is seen in Pimpernel Smith. She is the French woman in the powder shop. She sadly died a few months after this. When she died, Leslie Howard phoned his wife, who went to pick him up from the hospital.
      His wife, Ruth, must have been a very special woman. He remained married to her all his life. I think the favoured mistress was exiting as a reliving of youth, but I truly believe the love of his life was the woman he married. She was not a star or even an actress. She struggled with her weight all her life. But she provided him with something modern women would perhaps disapprove of: she provided a safe, secure home and took care of him. No one ever mentions this, but she must have nursed him back to health after he was invalided out of the army in WWI. I have noticed that men and women who go through this together tend to form a very strong bond. Clearly, she had to turn a blind eye every 45 minutes, but she loved him. Unconditionally and forever.
      Ruth was the love of his life.
      Sorry. I have gone on. It is just that had he lived, he would undoubtedly have matured into character roles and would have been known as one of the greats.
      Instead of all that he could have had, he made a different choice.
      He gave his life for his country.
