Hey y'all. Hope you guys enjoy this one. When I first began writing it, I had my Star Fox video in mind and thought... hey I can probably make a one hour video out of Pikmin! Oh how wrong I was. And those are just off the top of my head... so if there's anything I missed, let's talk about it :D. I can't believe Pikmin 4 is finally here and my plan is to play through it at my own pace and make a follow up video when I'm ready. Hope to be back again sooner than later!

I genuinely think Shigeru's favourite series is Pikmin. Just the way he talks about it shows how much he loves the series, and despite it lagging behind the other nintendo titans, a pikmin game always seems to make its way into whatever new console Nintendo releases.
He very clearly loves it. Visiting nintendo world at universal, there’s Pikmin carrying a mario coin. I’m sure there’s other nintendo references among there, but I thought it was so sweet that a semi niche game would be represented here.

pikmin is probably the first direct cause for my love of roguelikes. the stress of such a tight timeline and the necessity of full resets is so fun to me.
kinda criminal that u put so much research and effort to this video and(when writing this comment) you only have 7.6k views u deserve so much more and you have my respect for this amazing retrospect of pikmin
I did this too. I'm about halfway done with a 100% run of 4. They didn't add all that much to change it. Rather, they combined the best aspects of the 3 precious games. The vast open worlds of 1, the dungeons and unlimited days of 2, with the modern controls and QOL improvements of 3. It's probably the most difficult pikmin game, though i have yet to finish it
I actually think its one of the easiest Pikmin games, but it's difficult to truly evaluate the difficulty from my perspective because I've played Pikmin all my life!
love love love you for putting it into words. the relationship with the pikmin, how it’s disturbing but loving but mournful, you got it. you got it down exactly.
Bro I've been a massive Pikmin fan since I was 10 back in 2012. My family was always a SEGA/Xbox fam so I didn't get to play Pikmin till I got my own switch in 2021 after I moved out. I did watch nearly every Pikmin lets play though as a child. I'm so glad they ported Pikmin 1 & 2 to the Switch. I'm so syked for tomorrow!
This video is SOO amazing and crafted with so much love and care for the series' history!! I'm just getting into the Pikmin series through Pikmin 4 and the lore about the development and changes with each installment are so fascinating :-) Now I really wanna play the rest of the games!
They're definitely worth checking out after 4! 4 is really a fantastic entry point. You'll notice things in the previous games that really haven't aged as well but you'll also see where a lot of the inspiration and iteration for 4 came from!
I was that friend that wanted to stay downstairs and play Pikmin while everyone else went upstairs to play smash bros.I mean I loved me some good smash sessions but man Pikmin just captivated me in such a special way man.
@@wizawhat looking it up it seems like it may have been, I honestly didn’t know Olimar was in smash 4 because I never played that game lol, but it seems that was when his Up special was changed to winged pikmin
This is a great video. This isn’t talked about enough. Nintendo is so innovative and they’re sooo loyal to their creations and I think that’s soooooooo honorable. Mario literally started as Jumper man and now he is MARIO and he had one of the best box office movies of this year. Nintendo is really on a different level. Sure they may not always have the strongest systems but they’re never too far behind and they make up for it in different ways.
Wow, I never heard someone so positive about Hey! Pikmin. I actually liked the game a bit at launch and put it down after the Switch announcement and my obsession with Paper Mario Color Splash. You made me want to replay it just to see my own thoughts and share that knowledge with others.
It's definitely not mind blowing but I had a lot of fun with it, even after binging through it in a weekend. For someone who just wants something lowkey to pick up and play for an hour or two every once in awhile I think its a great substitute while waiting for the next mainline game.
39:09 i did the same thing back when I was around the same age. And forever since i can't stand the noise they make when water, and I would play with no sound on in any water areas though pikmin 1-2-3 it was a miracle for me when they changed the sounds they make for pikmin 4.
@@wizawhat yeah its not so much the bubbling as they go under but the panic part of it. I wonder if its also the rather "compressed" quality of it as its a longer loop they had to fit on the disc.. that sort gives it a very unnatural sound
this video is my first exposure to the Pikmin series, like, ever. despite being a Nintendo fan all my life! you are very good at making these videos, i found a lot of what you had to say about the series very easy to follow and quite interesting, and i can definitely see myself giving the series a try at some point. thanks for blessing us with your wonderfully crafted videos and discussions!
Genuinely one of my favorite video essays I've ever watched. I love learning the history of all of the games like this, and it's easy to tell these games hold a very special place in your heart. It's so lovely when videos like this are made with so much care and dedication in every frame. I saw Hey Pikmin when it came out and I sorely misjudged it like everyone else. After watching the video, I want to go out and see if I can find a copy to try it out. I've put this video on a minimum of 5 times while I work and it's just 2.5 hours of sheer delight every time. Not even mentioning how well it's put together. Thank you for the hard work and love that you put into this video.
Great fucking video Mr. Wizawhat. Been excited for Pikmin 4 and have been on a Pikmin-bender lately. Always glad to hear some love for this niche series!
My copy of Pikmin 4 was delayed until Monday but this video kept me good company and made the wait more bearable, thank you for another wizawhat banger
Pikmin 2 and Majora's mask have a lot in common, both happen to be sequels using existing assets with very different tone and gameplay progression than the originals and I love them both
the breakdown of the magic of the first gate in forest of hope is so real. i can picture, clearer than most memories, my first time playing the game and interacting with that gate. all the emotions you expressed about the atmosphere of the first game resonated with me a lot. even when i was a kid, that game evoked such an addictive melancholy that few other games have in store. great video :)
Thank you for putting into words why Pikmin 2 is my favourite Nintendo game of all time, if not my favourite game period. That sense of something beyond nature looming just beneath the surface is an emotion that a lot of media tries to capture, but I've never seen such a success as Pikmin 2.
i've watched a couple of your videos by now. i adore the passion in your voice - i've never played a pikmin game before, but its so easy to feel invested in this with your delivery. :)
It's amazing to me how deep Pikmin 1 in particular (but as a series too) is, narratively and gameplay-wise, and yet so many Nintendo fans still haven't tried it
You know despite the caves being bad by your description I love them as I see that they've actually went the full way on randomising how the layout is because they also randomised the music which I think is pretty cool edit honestly didn't expect him to put down hey pikmin in here as my first pikmin game I loved it especially the collecting shiny objects part I love shiny things Each of the twenty pikmin you met in each level had their own personalities and jokes that would accompany their character throughout that level If there are any cutscenes in that level (normaly there are)
The way you went through reviewing Pikmin 2 brought my feelings into words about that wonderful game, dont worry about Pikmin 2 fans being upset bc as one myself I find ur review of it being the best one I have ever listened to
It's kind of funny (in an unfortunate way) how he praised Pikmin 3 for so many reasons and then Pikmin 4 removed most of those reasons for the sake of basically just making an easy, handholdy version Pikmin 2 where they purposefully limit the number of pikmin you can use strictly so you have to use the dog. I see how Pikmin 2 fans are happy, but for Pikmin 3 fans it really feels like a step back for the series outside of the improved graphics and added inventory mechanic.
I think there's a lot for Pikmin 3 fans to enjoy in Pikmin 4, but it's obviously more inspired by and for the Pikmin 2 fans. It's really not a step back. If anything, its a lateral step just as Pikmin 2 was to Pikmin 1, but nonetheless is likely a problem they tried to address with the dandori challenges and Olimar Shipwreck Tale, and will have to continue dealing with moving forward.
Pikmin 2 will always be my favorite BECAUSE of its flaws. I like how powerful purples make me feel. I like how the whole game isn't held by the constant tension in the first game. I like how it has sudden spikes of terror and difficulty that feels unfair. The things that are frustrating in this game only add to it for me.
wow this is such an amazing video, makes me appreciate how the pikmin series persevered against unfortune circumstances and how hard they work to make this franchise and the passion that goes into each installment. I personally love how they are willing to experiment with all the pikmin games it gives each installment a unique feel to it. Also makes me happy to see pikmin 4 being the best selling pikmin game with over 3 million sold like metroid dread.
Definitely peaked my interest in Hey Pikmin, since Federation Force is another one of those games, and having played it, I can tell you it's a pretty solid co-op shooter (it really did just suffer from very, very poor timing). I do also love me a good puzzle platformer. Also some great insight into the series as a whole, making me realize just why 2 is my favorite, while also making me appreciate the other entries more.
As a diehard Metroid fan I'malso interested in Federation Force as it's the only game I never played (that and Pinball). But the thing is, it really, REALLY looks like you need other live people in co-op to actually get the intended experience. If I play it solo, I'm 99% certain I'll be underwhelmed. I think that was the second death knell no one talks about
@@RyouShi98 Oh definitely. I say it's a solid co-op shooter, with an emphasis on the co-op part. I played through it with my nephew. There is a piece of equipment to help out people playing solo, but, yeah, solo's probably not a worthwhile experience unless you're really, REALLY curious. Also, Pinball's also pretty dope. Like, it is just pinball, but it's a pretty rad pinball game.
The intro reminds me of what makes nintendo so great. Unlike so many other game companies that chase after trends Nintendo just focuses on doing its own thing. That made themnstand out more than any one else out there.
absolutely fantastic video , far exceeded my expectations w/ all that background ! ya have a great way of speaking , i was engaged the entire time !! thank you very much :D
i'm so glad pikmin 4 has brought so many more people into the series now, myself included. i've been a fan of pikmin since i watched chuggaaconroy's playthrough of 2 way back when, but i never had an opportunity to have any of these games for myself until recently. the world of pikmin has occupied a specific nostalgic space in my mind for years, and the release/popularity of 4 has finally given me reason to actually enter that world for myself. it's a unique feeling, and i owe that feeling to the endurance of the series.
man this video deserves more views! i thought itd be weird dudebro clickbait but its so passionate and well-researched.... one of my favorite pikmin vids right off the bat :^)
this felt like a documentary. I appreciate your passion. I love Pikmin but I feel like not enough people around enjoy it like I do. this was very well done.
I will always defend Pikmin 2's caves for highlighting just how versatile the core gameplay mechanics of Pikmin really are. They shift the player's approach from meticulously multitasking and spreading your troops thin for maximum efficiency, to huddling closely together and creeping around with an increased sense of caution, activating and suppressing traps one by one as if you were defusing a bomb, and strategically taking down groups of enemies that are clumped together in such a way that would spell disaster if you were to just recklessly charge in. And the fact that the layouts are procedurally generated means you can never truly learn or memorize your way through. Even if you reset a sublevel in hopes of undoing a loss, you'll be greeted with an entirely new rearrangement of elements, all waiting to ambush you anew. To me, it's exciting in a completely different way than how Pikmin 1 captures you, but it still makes just as effective use out of Olimar and the Pikmin's abilities, the challenge in both cases being to juggle a gigantic horde of powerful yet fragile creatures in order to collect the items required to finish the game. But just as the biggest threat in Pikmin 1 is time, it feels like in Pikmin 2 the opposite is true, that being the space itself surrounding you. I can completely understand how some felt it cheapened the brand of gameplay that Pikmin 1 introduced, but to me, it was a showcase of how flexible the formula can be... case in point, the way both Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4 situate themselves on various points along this vague spectrum of "1 style" vs. "2 style" without ever drastically veering from either of those games, yet still manage to deliver fresh and unique experiences in their own ways. Who knows what direction a hypothetical Pikmin 5 would take the series in now.
Ive always wanted to get into this series and Im glad that theres ways for me to be able to do just that! The world, characters, stories and lore all seem sooo charming and I cant wait to experience all of these games. This is a great video so far and Ill make sure to finish watching after I play them
This was fantastic to listen to at work! Really brightened my day :) Personally, I don't enjoy the Pikmin series because they stress me out too bad between the time limit and the Pikmin dying, but I wish I did because their atmosphere is incredible. (And sadly Pikmin Bloom doesn't work on my phone rip) I loved hearing how someone who does enjoy the gameplay tell me what they see in it, that was so cool, like someone picking out all the best bits for me ^^ Also I think maybe I should give Hey Pikmin a go, a puzzle platformer sounds a lot more my speed! Thank you so much for all of your efforts, you made my day and got me to appreciate a series in a new light :)
“Most unlucky franchise” Me, a Star Fox fan watching as every title is sacrificed at the alter of hardware gimmicks because miyamoto doesn’t really care about it. I am genuinely happy that new pikmin fans can get their hands on the entire series with relatively little hassle though.
Hahaha, I've already covered Star Fox on this channel. Star Fox isn't unlucky, its entries have just been... hit or miss... to put it as nicely as possible

Pikmin is one of my favorite game series ever. I love the gameplay and the feeling of the world you’re in running around in it feels cozy but mysterious and the music is great also. Good memories playing pikmin 2 on my GameCube when I was younger even though I kind of sucked at it back then and didn’t get it like I do now but I’ve just appreciated it more over the years
Maybe it wasn't a good way to reintroduce my mother to video games after she hadn't played one since the Legend of Zelda, but she did the same thing you did. She marched 100 pikmin right into the water, and paralyzed with the stressed sounds she sat there, unmoving, freaking out as they all perished. It actually upset her. She'll bring it up and talk about it over a decade later. I don't think I've seen another franchise generate that much connection with it's "pawns." It really is something else.

I am really enjoying it and can't wait to talk about it in my follow up video 😄
pikmin is probably the first direct cause for my love of roguelikes. the stress of such a tight timeline and the necessity of full resets is so fun to me.
kinda criminal that u put so much research and effort to this video and(when writing this comment) you only have 7.6k views u deserve so much more and you have my respect for this amazing retrospect of pikmin
I'm delighted to see such a strongly put-together retrospective about this delightful series. Excellent, excellent work
Thank you, your videos and dedication to Pikmin is awesome, the Pikmin Unearthed video in particular is incredible!
@@wizawhat I said that because I didn't know the rewind feature was immediately available. I cannot read
The dungeons are nothing like Pikmin 2. At all. That's what makes them good. Also, the Dandori Challenges are basically Mission Mode from 3.
love love love you for putting it into words. the relationship with the pikmin, how it’s disturbing but loving but mournful, you got it. you got it down exactly.
2:14:30 NOT ME FINDING OUT OLIMAR’S RECOVERY IN SMASH IS A HEY PIKMIN REFERENCE AND NOT AN ORIGINAL IDEA FOR SMASH 😭😭😭
I think that may have been the other way around actually
Hey pikmin is for sure an adorable game.
Excellent work, hope this blows up
39:09 i did the same thing back when I was around the same age. And forever since i can't stand the noise they make when water, and I would play with no sound on in any water areas though pikmin 1-2-3 it was a miracle for me when they changed the sounds they make for pikmin 4.
The drowning noise is absolutely horrifying, especially with large groups of Pikmin
@@wizawhat yeah its not so much the bubbling as they go under but the panic part of it. I wonder if its also the rather "compressed" quality of it as its a longer loop they had to fit on the disc.. that sort gives it a very unnatural sound
Bro fr just convinced me to buy pikmin 4
this video is my first exposure to the Pikmin series, like, ever. despite being a Nintendo fan all my life!
you are very good at making these videos, i found a lot of what you had to say about the series very easy to follow and quite interesting, and i can definitely see myself giving the series a try at some point. thanks for blessing us with your wonderfully crafted videos and discussions!
Thank you so much! 🥺 If I've gotten anyone a little more interested in Pikmin I consider this video a success 🙏
Pikmin is my favorite game franchise and I'm happy it's finally getting noticed
Dude you just earned a sub this is probably the best take for pikmin 2 I've seen
Happy to know I've made the Pikmin 2 fans proud!
As a Pikmin fan since the Pikmin 1 days, its always great to see and hear what people think about the games! Imma definitly enjoy this video!
I'm always looking for long in-depth retrospectives to listen to at work and this one provided! Thanks for the great video!
Plot twist, Pikmin ended up being several times more scary than Luigi's Mansion.
Thank you so much! It's really tough putting videos like these together, so it means a lot to me to hear that from you.
Great fucking video Mr. Wizawhat. Been excited for Pikmin 4 and have been on a Pikmin-bender lately. Always glad to hear some love for this niche series!
great video! really hope pikmin 4 sells well and that more people fall in love with its charm and dandori
My copy of Pikmin 4 was delayed until Monday but this video kept me good company and made the wait more bearable, thank you for another wizawhat banger
this was a masterpiece of a video, amazing storytelling and informative nature man, keep it up
By far the best Pikmin retrospective on RUclips. Thank you.
Thank you!!
A perfect way to send us off to a new pikmin horizon. Love to see it
I want to meet Miyamoto just to have him watch this video
I knew you were anticipating this so glad to see you enjoyed it 😀
Pikmin 2 and Majora's mask have a lot in common, both happen to be sequels using existing assets with very different tone and gameplay progression than the originals and I love them both
The creativity that is born from limitations in sequels such as these is really impressive
Thank you for the perspective you brought to the series
the breakdown of the magic of the first gate in forest of hope is so real. i can picture, clearer than most memories, my first time playing the game and interacting with that gate. all the emotions you expressed about the atmosphere of the first game resonated with me a lot. even when i was a kid, that game evoked such an addictive melancholy that few other games have in store. great video :)
Thank you for putting into words why Pikmin 2 is my favourite Nintendo game of all time, if not my favourite game period.
That sense of something beyond nature looming just beneath the surface is an emotion that a lot of media tries to capture, but I've never seen such a success as Pikmin 2.
This is truly one of the most loving, thought provoking and passionate video essays ive ever seen, well done.
"Patiently awaiting" my ass. R/Pikmin devolved into complete insanity waiting for pikmin 4.
i've watched a couple of your videos by now. i adore the passion in your voice - i've never played a pikmin game before, but its so easy to feel invested in this with your delivery. :)
Thank you so much that means a lot 🙏
It's amazing to me how deep Pikmin 1 in particular (but as a series too) is, narratively and gameplay-wise, and yet so many Nintendo fans still haven't tried it
You know despite the caves being bad by your description I love them as I see that they've actually went the full way on randomising how the layout is because they also randomised the music which I think is pretty cool
edit
honestly didn't expect him to put down hey pikmin in here as my first pikmin game I loved it
especially the collecting shiny objects part I love shiny things
Each of the twenty pikmin you met in each level had their own personalities and jokes that would accompany their character throughout that level If there are any cutscenes in that level (normaly there are)
The way you went through reviewing Pikmin 2 brought my feelings into words about that wonderful game, dont worry about Pikmin 2 fans being upset bc as one myself I find ur review of it being the best one I have ever listened to
I'm so happy to hear I've made Pikmin 2 fans proud!!
Pikmin is about to write history. I'm afraid that for starfox which you mention in the opening though, zero wrote it's legacy
Damn what a juggernaut of a video! Thank you for your insights and hard work.
Thank you for watching!
I am impressed with how well this was written. The editting is fantastic too. Just wow
wow this is such an amazing video, makes me appreciate how the pikmin series persevered against unfortune circumstances and how hard they work to make this franchise and the passion that goes into each installment.
I personally love how they are willing to experiment with all the pikmin games it gives each installment a unique feel to it.
Also makes me happy to see pikmin 4 being the best selling pikmin game with over 3 million sold like metroid dread.
Ever since pikmin got a switch port, I have seen pikmin get it's due praise that it should have been getting for years
Definitely peaked my interest in Hey Pikmin, since Federation Force is another one of those games, and having played it, I can tell you it's a pretty solid co-op shooter (it really did just suffer from very, very poor timing). I do also love me a good puzzle platformer.
Also some great insight into the series as a whole, making me realize just why 2 is my favorite, while also making me appreciate the other entries more.
Yeah I am definitely more interested in Federation Force after playing Hey Pikmin
Like, it is just pinball, but it's a pretty rad pinball game.
i am so glad you reviewed EVERY pikmin game. Yep, all of them
Nintendo would NEVER blunder and make a Pikmin game for the 3DS, that's just crazy!
Little do you two know that I like the 3DS one.
@@wizawhat what 3ds one
This video is well written and full of passion. Thank you so much for putting that so much effort in it, this franchise deserves it!!
The intro reminds me of what makes nintendo so great. Unlike so many other game companies that chase after trends Nintendo just focuses on doing its own thing. That made themnstand out more than any one else out there.
I remember as a kid, being absolutely terrified of the Mamuta in Pikmin 1, and I have still yet to beat the game.
absolutely fantastic video , far exceeded my expectations w/ all that background ! ya have a great way of speaking , i was engaged the entire time !! thank you very much :D
Very interesting. I like your focus on specifics, anecdotes, and history with the game.
I love Pikmin, and this video got me super excited for Pikmin 4, which I've nearly completed now. Thanks for the wonderful story, subscribed!
Why would anyone think that a video game from a poorly-selling franchise being made for what is essentially a dead console is a "cash grab"?
Your description of the Smoky Progg nailed it down perfectly. You really do not miss. I have to subscribe
The praise to hey at the end was a golden cherry on top of this high end gourmet
i'm so glad pikmin 4 has brought so many more people into the series now, myself included. i've been a fan of pikmin since i watched chuggaaconroy's playthrough of 2 way back when, but i never had an opportunity to have any of these games for myself until recently. the world of pikmin has occupied a specific nostalgic space in my mind for years, and the release/popularity of 4 has finally given me reason to actually enter that world for myself. it's a unique feeling, and i owe that feeling to the endurance of the series.
man this video deserves more views! i thought itd be weird dudebro clickbait but its so passionate and well-researched.... one of my favorite pikmin vids right off the bat :^)
this felt like a documentary. I appreciate your passion. I love Pikmin but I feel like not enough people around enjoy it like I do. this was very well done.
Fun fact the 0.5 white pikmin damage was added in Pikmin 3
This was awesome video to watch before i played pikmin 4. Really nice job
This was really worth watching before finally getting to start playing pikmin 4
The best retrospective on pikmin period.
Manor Update: The Japanese physical release of Pikmin 4 has officially outsold Final Fantasy 16's Japanese physical release.
This is easily one of the best videos i have ever watched. Well done
Ive always wanted to get into this series and Im glad that theres ways for me to be able to do just that! The world, characters, stories and lore all seem sooo charming and I cant wait to experience all of these games. This is a great video so far and Ill make sure to finish watching after I play them
4 out of 6 are on switch. The other don't matter and suck.
@@TempoLOOKING Hey Pikmin and the other one I assume?
@@starbutter2730 pikmen bloom.
Wow, this was very well made
This was fantastic to listen to at work! Really brightened my day :) Personally, I don't enjoy the Pikmin series because they stress me out too bad between the time limit and the Pikmin dying, but I wish I did because their atmosphere is incredible. (And sadly Pikmin Bloom doesn't work on my phone rip) I loved hearing how someone who does enjoy the gameplay tell me what they see in it, that was so cool, like someone picking out all the best bits for me ^^
Also I think maybe I should give Hey Pikmin a go, a puzzle platformer sounds a lot more my speed! Thank you so much for all of your efforts, you made my day and got me to appreciate a series in a new light :)
“Most unlucky franchise”
Me, a Star Fox fan watching as every title is sacrificed at the alter of hardware gimmicks because miyamoto doesn’t really care about it.
I am genuinely happy that new pikmin fans can get their hands on the entire series with relatively little hassle though.
Hahaha, I've already covered Star Fox on this channel. Star Fox isn't unlucky, its entries have just been... hit or miss... to put it as nicely as possible
@@wizawhat I suppose I more mean that pikmin is one of nintendo's first party babies and will be around for as long as those people are working in the industry.
I'm still working my way through the starfox video, I listen at work mostly, enjoying the videos!
The first time i played something related to pikmin was nintendo land and super smash bros on "Wii U" but recently I am now playing the mainline pikmin games and i couldnt be happier
That Nintendo Land version is a great introduction to the series!
@wizawhat yeah but I knew nothing about it like the nectar and the bombs but now I know
Fantastic video, as always! Love the attention to detail and heart poured into this video!
Thank you so much!
The Wii U was the best console, and it was what introduced me to Pikmin. My sister and I got obsessed with Pikmin 3 and still play it till this day.
My god, well gonna enjoy watching this
