Yeah same, but it seems in 2021 there wasn't enough riders to warrant the 5 cars being out anywhere, which is a shame.

Yes, and paid for knowing which button to push and when is the key.

Kind of, but he's also paid to ensure the safety of all riders, respond to the system if it goes into a problem, know where trains are at all times, load trains onto and off the track, ensure platformers are giving the correct signals, know how to shut down the ride, how to start it up etc.
It's not just pressing a button, also under UK law, the rides operator can be held accountable if theres an accident proven to be by their negligence. As a former rides op, i can tell you, it's not an easy job.
