  • Call it one of those local-bird-makes-good stories: The first California condor to hatch at the Oregon Zoo’s conservation center turns 20 years old this month in Pinnacles National Park. Kun-Wac-Shun, aka condor No. 340, hatched at the Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation on May 9, 2004, and has been flying free in Central California since 2005.
    “It’s a great occasion to celebrate a species that not too long ago was on the very brink of extinction,” said Travis Koons, who oversees the zoo’s condor program. “In the 1980s, fewer than 30 of these birds remained on the planet. No. 340 has played a big role in the condor’s comeback.”

    I’ve always been fascinated by condors they are amazing birds and 340 has a story that is fitting for what he went through. Thank you Oregon zoo for everything you do for this awesome species and all animals.🤎🖤😊🌳

    Happy birthday to Kun-Wac-Shun! :D Kun-Wac-Shun reaching the age of 20 is a very significant milestone. The first Oregon Zoo-born condor to be released into nature, he has managed to sire three offspring in nature while sparking a decades-long effort that has condors numbering over 500 now. This is a testament of the importance of the Oregon Zoo's conservation work and its collaboration with partners.
    While I'm very pessimistic about its chances (based on reader response letters I've seen on The Oregonian/OregonLive), I hope voters will continue to show their support for the Oregon Zoo this upcoming election.

    I have been in love with Kun-Wac-Shun ever since he was a turkey-sized chick. His release videos made my heart soar. Feel so bad that he had to deal with the lead, the fires, etc. but he's surviving. He knows. And he's passing it on in his progeny. Happy, happy birthday to 340! And thank you, Joe, for your Condor work!

    Mr. Burnett, did you get to work with Andy the Andean condor before the California Condor program started? If I ever get to go birding down in Pinnacles, I think I would start crying if I saw Kun-Wac-Shun. What an amazing story. Happy hatchday, 340. (And oh no, 12 times. It's so terrifying.)

    What is the lifespan of the average condor?

      @Truffle85 Месяц назад +1

      According to wikipedia, some condors have lived up to 60 years. Some Andean condors have lived past 70.
