- Who would have thought we'd be talking about electronic music producer Deadmau5 and Baroque composer Henry Purcell in the same sentence!
If you can make musical connections like these with your students, everything starts clicking together.
They understand that learning scales and key signatures aren't just "musical chores" - they're the backbone of music.
And the songs they love listening to today? Well, it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the pieces they may deem as "boring"!

Came here after somebody posted this on the deadmau5 subreddit. Super interesting video, thank you! Subscribed :)
Oh super cool! Thanks for that. Have u got a link?
Great video! I shared this on the deadmau5 subreddit and deadmau5 himself responded! Here’s what he said:
“Yeah, pretty cool breakdown, but yup, def Purcell / Wendy Carlos inspired... and the clockwork is a nod to ticking right on the circle of fifths in full and also a nod to a clockwork orange ;) Which is one of my favorite movies. This guy tho kinda funny "I dare not watch it" hahaha all good, either way he does a great breakdown!”
Super pumped to get a reply from the man himself! Thanks
okay it's kinda crazy how it's actually like a clock moving around the circle of fifths, 12 keys for 12 hours on the clock. never would have realized that and absolutely blows my mind.
he actually opened with this track at the start of the proper deadmau5 set for his retro5pective show this last month, which i seriously didn't expect. hearing it live was awesome.
Oh that would’ve been amazing to hear live. Wow. What did the crowd think? Interesting opener!

Awesome mate, super interesting.
Cheers Jamie 👍
Always enjoy your discoveries!
Thanks MJ!
Awesome video. Deadmau5 is my favorite artist and this context makes this track so much cooler.
Ion want my melodies to sound like a kid going ham on a kazoo no more
If you have time please tell me: What is MUSIC as compared to Language/talking?
I believe both should be taught in the same way. But not sure your question.
Yeah!! So good. Teacher here in the UK, I love classical and dance music and the circle of 5ths, what more could a person wish for!? 😂 I love your output, and your general enthusiasm and positivity around music pedagogy. You make me feel brave to experiment with unconventional ways of doing things, and following where the students’ (and my) energy take us. Thank you so much. ❤
That’s awesome! Happy to have given you the confidence 👍
I remember an old stream where here talked about this song, how it was a remix of a remix of a remix of a remix... Now I understand what he meant 😅
That’s it!
