  • Why Was George Russell Disqualified After A Brilliant Strategy Call In The 2024 Belgian GP
George Russel was disqualified from the Belgium gp due to being underweight. The Mercedes f1 team had a 1-2 and it was taken away hours after the grand prix had finished. This means zero points afte what was a thrilling grand prix before the summer break. Lewis hamilton has now taken his 105 victory.

People should read the summons doc. It says the car was initially weighed and found to be right at the limit, like to the decimal point, which the FIA thought was suspicious so they checked the fuel tank saw there was over 2L of fuel left. So they fully drained the tank, as per the regs, and re-weighed the car and found it to be 1.5kg lighter. Got nothing to do with fuel saving or marble pickup

    • @seanfrip9036

And it is mightily suspicious that the car weighted exactly what it had to, minimally, AND had too much fuel in it. Even more suspicious is the fact that Toto didn't scream and shout about it, but just meekly accepted the DQ. I wonder why...

If Russell two-stopped at initially planned, there'd be more rubber left on his tyres.
Had they a full cool down lap, Russell would've collected more pick-up on his final tour to the pits.
Who knows if it's enough to make up 1.5kg, but at 400g (less than ¾lb) per tyre, on a 12-14kg (25-28lb) tyre, who knows? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Not watching this live and hearing the result of the DQ for car 63 (at the time I didn't know this with George Russell) then watching the post race interviews with George telling lovely stories about how great the strategy was (which was him pretty much patting himself on the back as even the team towards the end were asking if he actually wanted to go ahead with the strategy), hearing Russell's post race radio comments (again about the amazing strategy) was absolute gold, I don't even feel bad for Russell, he knew what he had to do to ensure that the car would meet regulations but chose not to. Maybe I am just mean, though I am no team Hamilton person I still think he was the best driver on the day and get his just rewards! I liked Russell when he was at Williams but since coming to Mercedes we have seen his real side and I find days like this poetic. I will probably be struck down by lightening tomorrow, but I will still smile about this!

George has been so unlucky this season. Lost points in Australia because of Alonso's antics, lost a likely win from pole in Britain because of a water leak, was on the back foot in Hungary because of a strategy mistake in qualy and now lost a win because Mercedes underfueled his car. Seems like he used all his luck to win in Austria

Once Russell saw lewis pit, switching to a one stop was an easy decision to make.
I mean at that point Russell had nothing to lose.
And a one stop was his only chance of finishing ahead of lewis, considering how difficult to overtake on this track was.

How do we love the sport when we don't know who won after a checkered flag? I was a hardcore fan and never missed a single session since 2004-05 until recently, when F1 had a Red Bull-Mercedes-Red Bull sandwich. Also, regulation didn't help the sport if you called it something where you cannot pass a driver without pressing a button on your steering wheel or have a one-step softer tyre. When you start a TV to watch GP, all you can see is cars running around the circuit in a certain order without challenging anyone. It pains me a lot to see once a golden racing competition becomes a total sh*t show. I didn't even watch Grand Prix's from the last few years except in 2021 in Abu Dhabi, when we went racing. I subscribed to this channel to get the results and overall information on what's going on.

Not really because he had quite a excess of fuel in the car at the end. Maybe lewis driving style leads to him using less fuel, as they asked lewis to lift and coast quite early on. So they expected a safety car yet george had 1.8 extra litres of fuel, but lewis had saved some, so that extra weight is more than the difference in fuel.

george had a great 2nd stint, and it was primarily his initiative that got him the one-stop stategy, but i feel like he got quite lucky too: at the start of his 2nd stint he was behind perez and ahead of max, so max couldnt get past him (drs train), and since perez was slow russell could semi-manage his tyres for a few laps. Then at lap 26 when lec and ham pitted it put piastri on a similar runplan, and lando and max had to pit again since they were behind russell and couldnt make it past him. all of the above gave russell both the track position and the poor result of p7 if he was to pit again, hence the one stopper. idk i feel like hamilton controlled the entire race vs the rest of the top 8 so well that it was discouraging seeing him try to catch up to his teammate that had a different strategy and kind of coasted his way to the end. disqualification was really sad regardless.
