This in an interesting ongoing discussion that I've heard before. It brought me to how Alanis Morissette told Oprah that music "isn't healing" but that its "cathartic". What I think Stromae may be trying to say is that art is physically useless and provides little practicality, in the sense that we don't require it to survive; art physically cannot help someone in the literal sense. Instead, it serves as mental, physiological, and emotional stimulation that in turn hugely influences the cycle of emotions that people experience and ultimately moves them to take action. It is made up of concepts that people manifest in the material world. And when he referred to how people give art so much "attention" my interpretation was that people give art such high value by making such a big deal on how amazing it is. While it is nice to appreciate art, not everything in life requires an artistic touch to be considered valuable. This also made me think about how Andrew Wyeth stated that some artist think that everything they create is a work of art; we tend to forget that art is a part of a process, a cathartic fulfillment, instead of something given a hefty price tag.
No, he actually said art was useless and that being an artist is a luxury. The guy is shallow and doesnt recognize the power of his alleged craft, probably isnt completely aware that artistic forms manifest from the collective unconscious, probably is just on drugs and saying whatever pops into his head. +Cassandra it's because of their French equivalents! In French, "chef" means "leader", like the leader of a team. We have "chef" in English because it refers to the position as the head of a culinary team (in French, "chef de cuisine"), which is also why we have sous-chef (literally "under-leader", or second-in-command). The French word for a cook is "cuisinier", which is based on the verb "to cook" which is "cuire". So "cuisinier" translates to "cooker", and that's why a lot of people that natively speak French will call chefs "cookers", which I think is kinda cool.

Here, I'll do your research for you. Oscar Wilde coined the phrase (he's written a lot more about it than just this though), and when asked what he meant by it, this was his reply; My dear Sir Art is useless because its aim is simply to create a mood. It is not meant to instruct, or to influence action in any way. It is superbly sterile, and the note of its pleasure is sterility. If the contemplation of a work of art is followed by activity of any kind, the work is either of a very second-rate order, or the spectator has failed to realise the complete artistic impression. A work of art is useless as a flower is useless. A flower blossoms for its own joy. We gain a moment of joy by looking at it. That is all that is to be said about our relations to flowers. Of course man may sell the flower, and so make it useful to him, but this has nothing to do with the flower. It is not part of its essence. It is accidental. It is a misuse. All this is I fear very obscure. But the subject is a long one. Truly yours, Oscar Wilde

maybe stromae meant unnecessary but because the translation from French to English can be difficult, sometimes people translate literally every word from French or sometimes, when more experienced in English, simply translate the meaning in more or less words. I don't think he's saying it's useless because he is using it but rather that it's not a basis need for survival, like it's not gonna kill you if you don't have it. But I say just like diamonds come from the dirt and pressure, humans make art when they are at their lowest. You can look at history it's all there and perhaps the most understood manifestation of that is the slaves inventing ragtime which evolved into blues and other genres then jazz, rock and all our favorites genres today. It's also why they say the best art comes from suffering and hurt, it's something about it that connects us with it, it can make you cry, happy, laugh, sad, angry, pumped up, sad, any kind of emotion you can feel. Music will speak to you in the vibrations, sound waves and whatnot like nothing else can so to me it's a bit less unnecessary than Stromae might've said
Art is almost only build by what people bring into it. Art is beautiful because people decide it is. It means something because people chose it is. Other things has real value. We need food. We create things that we use in our lives. There is a part of craftmanship and stuff which is a useful thing but as a whole I agree with Stromae. Stromae is having a difficulty to express his exact thoughts with his English vocabulary. I get him when you speak two different languages, if you have something complex to say it’s harder to find the right word in the second language.
"we can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. the only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely. all art is quite useless." this dude seems to be painfully oblivious to the fact that he's inadvertently quoting oscar wilde and painfully oblivious to the sentiment behind the statement.
Oh my god you are literally the only other person in this comments section that knows where this came from. I can't believe so many people don't know who he was! I think Stromae knows, cos the quote was pretty much the same, and Wilde wrote in French as well, but Stromae doesn't seem to know how to express it in English. I could be wrong, either way the interviewer had no idea.
So hes saying art isnt the most important thing. People that provide us with basic needs are more important than art because they enable art to be made.
Love Stromae's reminder not to make music an idol or life teacher. Yes, interviewer, he knows music makes a change - both good and bad. #TousLesMemes because we all have the same heart to sin. #StayHumble (Disagree, but don't hate) #JesusIsLife
I only now realized he calls chefs "cookers", I always thought he said Cougars...lol.... I was like "OH, well Ok then" my boy was into cougars for some good inspiration.....lmao
As a creative person I agree. I’ve been into music production since 1998. It’s been a gift and a curse. Gift because I love creating. Curse because the music industry is the devil. And art is very useless compared to other fields that actually provide practical solutions for problems. Yet as he states famous artist act like they are GODS. When this is not the case. Social construct one may say.
We can only imagine how the world would be without music, let alone arts. I think it would be a horrible place full of unhappy psychos and stressed people everywhere.
What a fool interviewer, he didn't mean that art is not important at all All he means is that you, as an artist, don't have an exaggerated importance. You are an artist you make big and creative things, but you are not that important because some artists think that they are important because they are only artists. He didn't mean what you talking about.
True that! I think the language barrier is definitely a factor that make the interviewer misunderstood Paul and try to argue with him. I don't think he know how harsh the word "useless" can be, especially when you say that to an artist. He obviously didn't mean to look down on people who create art and art in general at all.
I think that, of course, music isn't what makes us survive but i think is what makes us live and understand the world and ourselves better, so how is it useless? And is it a luxury? Like the cavemen already created art and i wouldn't consider their position luxurious. However I understand that people tend to idolize (famous) artists in a way that isn't very sane, and that the people that make more practical things are as hardworking and important as any artist and is a pity that they don't get that reconicion
Does 6ix9ine, Lil Boonk or Gucci Gang x1000 man really make us understand the world better or make anyone want to live I would have thought the opposite occurs to be truthful art has devolved into a cesspit of narcissistic degeneracy based around sexuality, fake feuds, love interests and who can be the most 'real' while the money in your pocket rapidly vanishes to fund some billionares 200th mansion in Swahili?
I don't think that's what he actually mean. It is hard to explain especially if it's not your mother tongue (english is not his first language). Fortunately, I understand what Stromae is trying to say.
It is wonderful to have a point of view and be strong in one's convictions. I like this young gent. Perhaps with time he will become more gentle in his use of adjectives. To me, art is creativity and we need that to sustain ourselves.
+Elleisa M the problem ist that he can't put the words on what he's thinking. of course art is important but you can't eat art, you can't move from A to B with art. so his point is farmer, bus driver and the other singles persone who made this world wonderful should not be forget. and if you look the Maslow's Pyramid you understand what he's trying to say
It is hard to explain especially if it's not your mother tongue (english is not his first language). Fortunately, I understand what Stromae is trying to say. I love art so much, but I also agree with him. What he's saying is actually true.
I agree with him. Art motivates people. but the jobs that sustain ppl are most important. There will always be artists, but if there are no farmers, nurses/doctors, repairmen, builders, then there won't be anyone.
Music has no survival benefits. It’s not something we use to live it’s something we use to enjoy life. Like when dogs roll around in a pile of raccoon poop lmao. I love music, it’s such an important part of my life but I get what Stromae is saying.
He is right, art is useless through the view of practicality and utility. Art's purpose is to exist beyond utility and calling it useless does not mean it does not have any value, its that art's existence does not need to be justified through utility. Using the word useless is a celebration of art's intrinsic value
PvH is more right than wrong. Art is only important once all of the really important stuff is under control. It is a luxury. What it does do is improve the lives of people that have things under control.
I agree that the award ceremonies and all of that shit is useless, but i dont see Art as a luxury...for many its an absolute necessity. Maybe not for him.
MisterExon But for many people Art in whatever form it takes is necessary. If you had no entertainment whatsoever, and just what you needed to sustain yourself, you would be suicidal. Surely you dont think Art is a luxury?
I think that, of course, music isn't what makes us survive but i think is what makes us live and understand the world and ourselves better, so how is it useless? And is it a luxury? "Art is useless" in my opinion art cannot be timeless for example music and artwork its loses its meaning if u see it or hear it everyday. In addition to that people who commited as an artist have so much pressured to follow the new ideas and create their own ideas for example may be most current generation dont find the beatles as interesting as the music now. I know this sounds bias we are all know the beatles is a legend, but to fit in the current standart industry it is hard to accept classical rock with simple chords and tab comparing to already made electronic music. Some of us can enjoy old music or classical artwork right now but because of time it can lose its meaning due to popularity that may be the old music at they were appreciated (on peak) and it goes down as it loses its meaning. Other than that art is not the main things that people needs in their everyday life, food, shelter and clothing it is the main things. Music and art concept can change but essential needs arent change. some pop stars and artist may not always shine as bright as before but there will be some faithful fans still enjoying it. Sorry for my english
Tina Kulakove honestly just read the first lines of your comment and tbh if you think that music is not timeless then you’ve just not found your type of music , you didn’t listen well. Music and Art in general is Timeless
But i think thats kinda the point, the beauty of art can be perceived as enjoying the never-lasting stuff, right here, right now. I think that in a way, the fact that every art piece will loose its meaning with time just gives it a stronger meaning in the present
I do not see what is so thought provoking about this guy saying reproduction and food come before art, therefore it is not important. We all know this, however art and culture are essential to the growth of the human race, we do not want to just exist, but also to achieve. Also, coming from a family of classical musicians, most artists work their butts off and live far from luxurious lives. Pop starts on a pedestal are too much yes, but again, we all know this. Let us give a platform to people who are actually saying thought provoking things, not the things some teenager would announce feeling deeply philosophical and world weary. Gimme. A. Break.
Art is mysterious, nutrition and reproduction are very scientific and more black and white. That’s why there’s more value put on art, it’s just economics. You can’t mass produce art and it’s effect but it’s easier to make food and babies
"you can't mass produce art". Sadly, this statement aged pretty bad since NFTs came into being. Ps. I myself don't consider NFT as art but NFT was created, at least initially, for artists to claim their own work so I think it's still relevant in this situation.
@@Alextruong0912 sure you can make copies of an existing art piece of art, but that’s not what I was saying. There’s no simple factory line or easy formula to keep churning out great evolving art that people genuinely connect with.
There are people I know who would have committed suicide, but didn't after listening to certain music. That music kept them alive, therefore it was just as necessary for survival as food. The books On the Road, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and The Catcher In the Rye, all helped start the cultural revolution in the 60's. Two decades later, the Punk Rock movement gave thousands of teenagers a sense of identity, and bread an anti-conformity attitude which is still around today, with protests such as occupy Wall Street. There are films, such as Magnolia, Dead Poets Society, and American Beauty, which I know that if I had not seen them I would not be the same person, and I think many people could say the same, perhaps with the same films, perhaps with different ones. There are numerous points in history where art has helped bring about huge social changes, and I believe almost everyone can point to a piece of art and say "That helped form my self, that sculpted me, that helped make me who I am." Of course it's not quite as necessary as food or sleep. You could justify anything with that. If I cut off a man's arms and legs, can I say "Why are you upset? You can still have people bring you food and water, aren't those the really necessary things? Isn't moving from one place to another a bit of a luxury? Aren't your limbs essentially useless?" No. Is medicene a luxury, when food is so much more important? No. Stating anything is less important than the basic needs for survival is so self-evident that it becomes stupid, it's a nothing argument. It's like those people who say "Why are you so depressed? There's nothing wrong with you! My mom died when I was a kid, you don't see me whining and attempting suicide all the time!" As if only the single individual in the world who has had the most suffering and hardship is justified in their sadness, and everyone else, no matter how horrible their life is, has no right to feel bad about it as long as that person is out there somewhere. As if everything besides food, sleep, and water is a frivolous luxury that we have around just for fun.
Of course your right, but I think what he's trying to say is from a more scientific point of view. Humanity needs food to survive, you cannot survive with only art. Then, when we have what we need to survive, we can focus on "luxuries" like music and art and this is what makes our lives more enjoyable. I'm sure he knows how important art is: he's a composer, a musician and a singer and he uses different forms of art, not only music, to express his creativity.
eqsmooth Okay, so, you're not on my side. So why, exactly, did you point out that all prosperous societies have had lots of art? Anyway, it's not like there's a specific song that will save anyone's life (And I fail to see how my first sentence in any way implied music could bring people back from the dead), different music has different meanings. My mother has had a pretty hard life, and the music she listened to helped her have the courage to carry on. Her favorite band happens to be an alt-country band named Lucero; what of it? If a song speaks to you on a fundamental level, if it lets you know that other people have felt what you're feeling, then it can have a truly profound effect on you. That same song might leave someone else cold, because they don't relate to it in the same way. What is with your attitude, by the way? You're being very belligerent, while I'm trying to have a reasonable, intelligent discussion. Are you a troll?
eqsmooth The point isn't interesting enough to be worth making. The fellow in the video stated that "Art is useless", then elaborated that he meant "Art isn't a basic essential like food or water," which is a stupid point. It's true, but it's so obvious that it's not even worth discussing. "I need to get this job! If I don't, I'll lose my house, my car, my children, everything I need!" "Well, technically you don't NEED any of those things. All you really NEED is food, water, and sleep." See how ridiculous it sounds outside of this context? My argument was not that Art is a biological necessity, my arguement was that the fact that it is not does not by any means mean that it is useless, because that would mean EVERYTHING is useless. Also, Maslow never used a pyramid. Also, his hierarchy of needs is bullshit. He put sex on the same level as all these essentials we've mentioned, and morality at the highest, most unnecessary level. Most psychiatrists use attachment theory now, anyway.
i pity people who think art is useless. Youve been swindled. As time passes and we become more machine like in our daily activities youll be dreaming of a time when every second of your day wasnt focused on producing something "useful".
Interviewer is _not_ an idiot, but I side with Stromae on this one. If all jobs were in the same company then Art would be in the overhead part of its budget.
I love Stromae, but I don't agree with this one. The interviewer is not horrible, just because he has its own opinions and puts some arguments into interview.
Good point! Bad person to explain it to. That guy's job is to be in an unhealthy relationship with art. Plus he's pretty bad in this interview, he kept interrupting and trying to force his opinion down some1 who already have a firmer grasp on who he is....
danieladcjv he states these things as "almost useless" which is true in a sense, but as a society advances, so does the level/ tier of our "needs" so to say. I understand your point though :)

I love Stromae to bits, but I don't agree with him on this one. Art is not only useful, but essential cause as human beings we do live in this material dimension but what trully fullfils us is the spiritual part of existence. Art moves and inspires us, connects us and helps us express our deepest emotions and struggles. We live in these material bodies that need food and water and shelter over our head, but more important than that is the spiritual "food" necessary to make life a deep and meaningful experience. To conclude, all proffesions are important and necessary, they each contribute to human existence, but art as a form of expression, connection and feeling is definetly not a luxury, but an essential.

Art is in your clothes
Art is in histories
Art is in books
Art is in Color
Art is everywhere
That doesn't make it useful in terms of human survival.
I sometimes feel like the host doesn't let stromae speak
"how to not let fandom corrupt your soul"
So hes saying art isnt the most important thing. People that provide us with basic needs are more important than art because they enable art to be made.
It's exactly that, well put.
This interviewer is absolutely horrific. He cut him off soooo many times. Why??? Infuriating.
Love Stromae's reminder not to make music an idol or life teacher. Yes, interviewer, he knows music makes a change - both good and bad. #TousLesMemes because we all have the same heart to sin. #StayHumble (Disagree, but don't hate) #JesusIsLife
Haha English not even his first language and he articulates himself better than any Anglophone I know, and he's so on point.
Your Musical is saving my life so often. It motivates me ,makes me move, than I Start to smile again
I feel Stromae. I love art and I'm an artist, but sometimes I just hate artists and their ego
What a fool interviewer, he didn't mean that art is not important at all
All he means is that you, as an artist, don't have an exaggerated importance.
Stromae is intelligent and humble ❤
the host is horrible
NOTHING IS USELESS MAN
I don't think that's what he actually mean. It is hard to explain especially if it's not your mother tongue (english is not his first language).
Fortunately, I understand what Stromae is trying to say.
I love this man
It is wonderful to have a point of view and be strong in one's convictions.
I love music, it’s such an important part of my life but I get what Stromae is saying.
love him!
The interviewer should learn the art of interviewing. He interrupts too much. He listens too little.
Not as neccessary as food, ever.
MisterExon
But for many people Art in whatever form it takes is necessary.
Like the cavemen already created art and i wouldn't consider their position luxurious.
In my personal opinion...
Gimme. A. Break.
Pop Stars**
Dina El growth to human race? Nope that's dumb....your family is a musicians? More like a family of irrational idiots.
@@clickbisi7016 this aged worse 4 months later with AI being used to accurately predict hit music and create images...
I'm an artist and yea, art is pretty much useless lol
Every job is important
0:40 no u don't, now be quiet & let him speak
What you say is important but let me go through my question list in order to sell my story. Journalism 101.
He's right
There are people I know who would have committed suicide, but didn't after listening to certain music. There are numerous points in history where art has helped bring about huge social changes, and I believe almost everyone can point to a piece of art and say "That helped form my self, that sculpted me, that helped make me who I am."
Of course it's not quite as necessary as food or sleep.
I'm sure he knows how important art is: he's a composer, a musician and a singer and he uses different forms of art, not only music, to express his creativity.
eqsmooth
I'm failing to see exactly what your point is, or even who you agree with. Would you care to elaborate?
eqsmooth
I don't? What gave you that impression? I would be perfectly happy to engage. So please, go ahead, engage.
eqsmooth
Okay, so, you're not on my side.
Are you a troll?
eqsmooth
The point isn't interesting enough to be worth making. The fellow in the video stated that "Art is useless", then elaborated that he meant "Art isn't a basic essential like food or water," which is a stupid point. It's true, but it's so obvious that it's not even worth discussing.
"I need to get this job! If I don't, I'll lose my house, my car, my children, everything I need!"
"Well, technically you don't NEED any of those things. All you really NEED is food, water, and sleep."
See how ridiculous it sounds outside of this context? My argument was not that Art is a biological necessity, my arguement was that the fact that it is not does not by any means mean that it is useless, because that would mean EVERYTHING is useless.
Also, Maslow never used a pyramid. Also, his hierarchy of needs is bullshit. He put sex on the same level as all these essentials we've mentioned, and morality at the highest, most unnecessary level. Most psychiatrists use attachment theory now, anyway.
If artists are useless, go live in the woods, cause EVERYTHING you see, buy, live in, has gone through a artistic design process. Prove me wrong.
Omg he comes to sit down and agree to speak English and he is interrupted... Why the helk do you invite if not to let them speak?
Yes, art is almost useless.
jian said a bad word....
Stromae is saying art is enriching, but not essential to life and "stars" should get over themselves. The interviewer is very annoying.
you have Kanye and then you have Stromae.... quite the difference.
i pity people who think art is useless. Youve been swindled. As time passes and we become more machine like in our daily activities youll be dreaming of a time when every second of your day wasnt focused on producing something "useful".
Is the interviewer capable of being quiet for more than two seconds?
Interviewer is _not_ an idiot, but I side with Stromae on this one. If all jobs were in the same company then Art would be in the overhead part of its budget.
There are artists who agree with him.
I would remind you that also farmers would sing ect.
You think I am a fool
As an aspiring artist as well as a Stromae fan, this hurts me :'(
why? he is just saying that art is not the most important thing in the world, he just sees the bigger picture.
danieladcjv he states these things as "almost useless" which is true in a sense, but as a society advances, so does the level/ tier of our "needs" so to say. I understand your point though :)
I don't know what he really meant but I think that, of course, music isn't what makes us survive but i think is what makes us live and understand the world and ourselves better, so how is it useless? And is it a luxury? Like the cavemen already created art and i wouldn't consider their position luxurious. However I understand that people tend to idolize (famous) artists in a way that isn't very sane, and that the people that make more practical things are as hardworking and important as any artist and is a pity that they don't get that reconicion
The interviewer's point of view IS useless...
Art is useless
Says the guy that is literally wearing an art
cookers
“all art is quite useless” - Oscar Wilde
This is so not true. I completely disagree with this. Music IS important. It has the potential to CHANGE
If you can live without art, then art it's useless. Since we CAN'T live without art, it's not useless.
We can in the sense it's unnecessary. We can't in the sense anything can be art for someone.
Stromae is a POP artist though so his opinions are useless
And so is yours
