Simplicity at its finest. Copper inlay is lovely. Beautiful piece.
Thank you kindly Sylvia 😀
What a beautiful vase! The simplisity is stunning. The copper rim looks amazing on it too.
It even looks like a mid-century style form. I love it
Thank you very much Marcella, I love the way this one turned out 😁
The grain looks like Mahogany. If i could smell it, I'd know for sure😂
Excellent Mike!❤ Another fine turning.
Thanks 👍
It’s a beautiful piece Mike, I really like the copper inlay. And enjoyed watching this come together, months before I discovered your work/Art. Take care, busy times for you and your family. Moving is a lot of work.
Thanks and it certainly is but things are going well. We decided to get a lot of the usual clutter before we move again, the stuff you accumulate over the years, the stuff you keep but know will never use again. We have filled a whole skip so hopefully now a lot less to move 😀
@@MikeHolton I get it, been there done that. It sure is amazing how we accumulate stuff. I seriously went through all that when my last big move had been necessary. It was a serious offload, sure felt good! And it’s good to hear you folks are doing fine. Thanks!
Love the inlay.
Thanks so much 😀
2nd anniversary coming up in a couple of days. Happy Anniversary, Mike! By the way, this vase is absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks so much, I'll have to delay the celebration a few days but it will happen 😄
Lovely shape vase and looks awesome with the inlay. The gold wax also finishes it off beautifully.
Thanks Mike, for sharing
Thanks Fiona, hope you have had a good weekend 😀
@@MikeHolton thanks Mike, not the greatest.
Hope yours was awesome.
Here's to a new week 🙃
I believe its iroko as well.... Great job mate😀
Thanks Tom, I think we all agree it is.
The copper ring really sets off the design….excellent work, Mike!
Thanks Joe 👍 I did enjoy making this one
Very nice finished product.
Thanks Deb, glad you like it.
19:46 is the absolute magic moment in this video. What looked a bit sort of heath robinson becomes a perfectly beautiful inlay. Gorgeous Mike.
... I mean the piece is gorgeous.... well you are too. Especially since you seem to know the names of so many hard woods.
Haha thanks my friend, I must admit I was starting to worry a little that I may have messed up the inlay but it came out ok. I'm getting better at wood identification, although there are still big holes in my knowledge I'm trying to fill. All the best, Mike
The vase looks terrific. Well done as usual. I do like the wood and the copper, nice complimentary colours.
Looks like the pictures of iroko I have seen, although I do not have any in my shop. The colour is lighter than the sapele and mahogany I have in my shop.
Good call to grind a tool to get the narrower groove. Metalworking HSS tool bits e.g., 1/8in x 1/8in x 2 1/2in can be glued into a piece of mild steel bar then ground for various custom tools. These tool bits are inexpensive.
FYI copper is soft - when annealed, but it quickly work hardens when turned. So the initial amount you removed would have been easy, but then the later depth may have work hardened, so not so easy to remove. When machinist needs to machine copper they either remove the depth in one cut or they may have to remove the work to re-anneal.
My local turning club likes Starbond coloured CA glue brand. My nephew is returning in Sept if you want me to send some back with him. Just let me know the desired brand and thin, vs med vs thick.
Dave.
Hi Dave, the copper was a lot harder to turn back than I expected but did not give me any real problems. I will have a go at turning a drill bit into a cutting tool, I also have some spring steel which may work.
Starbond is a fortune over here, how much is it there? Quite happy to send over funds for a batch.
Thanks as ever, talk soon.
Mike
Starbond site shows 1oz $11.50 and 2oz $16.50.
I would not use a drill bit as a turning tool. Only the fluted section is hardened and the spiral flute shape is normally not what you want. The non-fluted section is not hardened, good steel but not hardened.
If you want a cheap source of a turning tool you may have in your shop, consider making one from an allen key which is hardened the entire length.
Dave.
@@lv_woodturner3899 Thanks Dave, I have loads of allen keys!! The price for starbond is pretty much the same as I can get O3a stuff here but thanks for the offer
Neat idea. Thanks for sharing 👍
lol your welcome :)
I don't know anything about wood, but I do know that is really pretty. Love it.
Thanks Nana 😀
When you first said mahogany or sapele I thought, “I don’t think so.” Iroko sounds as good as anything to call it as far as I’m concerned. Lovely shape and the copper inlay looks great.
Thanks Doug, because the blank was so dark and nasty, iroko never even crossed my mind, you must have a better eye than me which is not hard. Thanks my friend.
You Artist you!!!
@@nicholasscott3089 as long as I don't go mad and cut off my ear :D
That is sooo beautiful
Thanks Rebecca 😊
Beautiful work!
I hope you were using a respirator while getting rid of that surface mold.
Yes I was 😊 thanks
Nice piece !
Thank you! Cheers!
I don't know what the wood is, but I like the inlay.
Thanks Jen 😁
Just love the inlay, need to try this myself.
It's good fun, I must find a better way of cutting the trough.
I don’t know what wood it is, but I know it came out beautifully.
Thanks Ted, this one went way smoother than I thought it would lol
Awesome work. Love that color wood with the copper.
Thanks William, I've been wanting to make this for a while, the first copper I bought was way too thin so had to get more.
Cracking video Mike looks like iroko too me too 👍
Thanks Lee, that does seem to be the concencus of opinion
I like to wrap sandpaper around a piece of PVC pipe and hold it against the toolrest for sanding the inside of a vase.
Thanks, this sounds like a good idea! Mike 😀
Hi Mike, Id have gone with Iroko, i had previously bought some and there is quire a difference in the colour from a very dark brown to a very light tawny, but yours does look good with the copper inlay.
Thanks Steve, concencus is certainly saying iroko.
Hi Mike , only just starting to watch your video's and I'm liking what I see ,so I'll be watching a bit more , as to what timber it is ,I'm positive it's iroko as I've used it many time in a joinery shop , take care as the dust from iroko is really bad to breath in !!! Be watching soon keep turning 🏴
Thanks Dave, I try to be entertaining but keep it relaxed and friendly. Hope you enjoy watching more, but please remember I've only been doing this channel for a year so still plenty of room for improvement 😁
I think the final vase looks great and enjoy your relaxed and informative narration.
Question... What's that copper strip called? It's not a circular wire section like I'd have assumed... Was the strip used to get more 'grab' in the channel? Would 2.5mm solid core copper wire (domestic electrical installation) work, or fall out? I wonder...
Hi Frank, this is the listing on eBay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224066902545?var=523388491224.
I went for a strip as opposed to a bar so I could turn it back without the fear of it getting narrower again. 2.5mm copper wire would work just fine, if you wanted it thicker you can just twist it with a drill.
A lot of viewers are saying Iroko, it looks a little to yellow/golden to be Iroko, I think you were turning a piece of white Meranti, the copper inlay is a nice detail
Do you know what, after looking at it, it could be! Thanks 😀
I was thinking iroko, and it seems many others agree. By the way, Chestnut Products now do the black CA glue - I have some, but haven't needed it for anything yet.
Thanks and thanks for letting me know about chestnuts black CA, I'll take a look, thanks 😃
Yes Mike, not red enough for sapele. I have seen mahogany that colour but that’s unusual for mahogany. I haven’t turned any Orono or seen it in Australia so can’t really comment on that.
Lovely simple shape for a vase.
Great tutorial as always
Thanks Greg, pretty sire it was iroko, I have another block of this to do something with 😀
I have no clue as to the type of wood Mike...It sure is a beautiful piece, though! Great job, as usual! Jim
Thank you very much Jim, I love it as well, been wanting to make this for some time. The first lot of copper I bought was way too thin.
beautiful as always! thanks for the great content and happy belated family day from Canada :)
Thank you so much Dee, we do not have family day in the UK, but does sound like a nice celebration to have.
Love the shape of the vase and the inlay your gonna have to have a think about waterproofing the inside would look great with some yellow roses, as far as what wood it is I've got no idea 🤣
Hi David, indeed I may coat the inside with resin so it will become waterproof. Thanks my friend 🙂
Where did you get the copper inlay from, I use electrical wire copper and twist 2 wires together, have to be careful with sanding though. Don’t sand too much away.
This gives a lovely look.
Thanks Greg, I got this from ebay 😀
Great vase Mike, I really must stop showing the wife your videos.... she wants a copper inlay vase now.... as an aside, when I turn vases, I coat the inside with a thin resin to make them water tight....
Hi Steve, I think you should make your wife a copper inlay vase 😂. My wife is running out of places to put everything I maker her lol. Good call on the resin inside, I may do it with this one. Thanks
Hi Mike, I would lean to Iroko but possible African Teak. The final vase was beautiful, it looked like an acorn, the copper was a nice touch. Lots of nice bowl blanks in your shop, keep turning Mike.
Thanks Jim, the concencus is for iroko, so we are going with that lol, I've never turned African teak, will try it one day I'm sure. I have some beautiful blanks and more coming soon, I have a bit of an addiction to buying wood 😁
@@MikeHolton Same here, I buy slabs all the time. haha what a crazy addiction.
@@jimpike3489 cool, what do you make with your slabs?
@@MikeHolton At the moment Mike nothing, I'm not in good health and waiting for another operation to hopefully give me a fighting chance. I love making chess boards, mallets and general carvings. But hopefully be back in my shed soon.
@@jimpike3489 That's rough Jim, I hope the operation comes soon and goes well, and when it does, I would love to see one of your chess boards.
Going by the amount of fine dust coming off it could be Iroko,my guess anyway
Love the copper inlay and that embellishing wax sure does make the grain pop
👏👏
I love the wax, I have it in silver as well but always seem to go for the gold lol
crafts I've never used it , but does seem to make the grain pop
something for you to try, I use this idea for large pieces, it is expensive, I bought a ARBORTECH TURBOPlane Blade 4Inch/100mm Carbide Woodworking Disc Angle Grinder Attachment | IND.FG.400.20, (amazon), attached to an angle grinder, I use a HF, I put the large log in my lathe using a grip type center in the HS, and a spinner bearing in the TS, using a low speed and the turboplane, I can knock down and round the corners in short order, then use my carbide lathe tools, a word of caution to you and other readers, this will throw chips all over the place, make SURE you USE good eye protection. tape your sleeves and have a closed neck collar, and grip the angle grinder securely.
Thanks for the tip, you were not wrong about it being expensive! 😀
@@MikeHolton thanks, this does work, you have a name on youtube,
you might ask turbo plane if they would send you a unit to feature on your channel? maybe you could borrow one from a friend, I am telling you, HANG on to the angle grinder, the turbo plane tends to grab into the wood... just want to be safe using tools, for you and others
@@royalmaster203 Thanks again, I may give it a try but not for a video. I would not want someone copying and getting hurt for whatever reason even if it was their fault, it would have been me putting the idea into their head. But I really do appreciate you passing on tips, thanks
Another great object. Love the simple but classic shape. Would look good with either Daffodils or Tulips in it. Great, Cheers
Thanks Peter, the simplicity of this is really the main appeal, personally I love it 😃
Iroka
Hi Baz thanks so much 👍
👋🏻🌻🇺🇲🙂👍🏻
Hi Linda ;)
Beautiful work, Mike. The simple shape ends up extremely elegant!
Regarding sanding deep vases, have a look at this guy's method. Very simple but very effective: Sandpaper on a foam pad around a simple scrap piece of wood: ruclips.net/video/JBPxBxztop0/видео.html
Thanks Tom, sorry for the slow reply on this but it was held over because of the link and I did not look for held messages. All the best, Mike
@@MikeHolton No worries at all, Mike. I didn't know about held messages (or even what that means). I just wanted mostly to send a positive comment as your work is so amazing. Looking forward to more!
@@tomburns7544 I know Tom, it's just the RUclips algorithm that sees something with a link and keeps it for me to check first, trouble is I don't often check the hold page lol.
Hi Mike, looks great. Neat looking inlay and the black CA makes it pop a bit more. I turned a big old chunk of Iroko recently and it was a deeper red than yours, but presumably there are several species of Iroko which might account for different colours … that said, the grain did look the same! Whatever it is, it’s mega-cool 👍
It is a beautiful wood and like most it can have slightly different colour variation, are you sure yours was iroko and not sapele, they are very similar
I only have the word of the guy I got it from. He was an ex-chippy who said that it was from girder footings, he said that they use Iroko because it is super-water resistant. He sounded very convincing 😅 (there is a video of it on my channel if you want to check it out)
@@ClickandTurn Just looked and what you turned is definitely iroko, there may be some lighting variation but it looks almost identical to mine. Beautiful wood.
That’s cool
Great looking piece 😎😎
Thanks my friend, hope you are well.
I would have made the parting tool narrower than the copper band. The act of cutting will make the groove wider. Then friction fit the copper band...
Or... double up the copper banding for a slightly wider copper inlay!?
Just thinking!?🤔 Thanks Mike, we Love Your work!❤
That is a nice idea, I may have to have another go now 😃
Definitely Iroko. My wood source provides me with some lovely offcuts from architectural restoration work which they specialise in.
Thanks Nicholas, that is what I was thinking as well 😀
Sorry. That was a beautiful piece of wood. You could have done something better with it.
Thant's Ok Marie, no need to be sorry, I'm all good with honest opinion. I have another very similar piece, what do you suggest? All the best, Mike
Apparently woodturners don't make mistakes, just smaller vases. :D
Haha exactly 🤣
A blonde Mahogany!? Or is it still a mystery!?
I'm dying to know Mike, don't leave us hanging.😂
Haha it actually turned out to be Iroko
Wow, that looks superb. I will have another go at inlaying. I tried copper wire, had difficulty getting a good finish at the joint. Where did you get the copper from?
Thanks Christopher, I got it from Amazon
Beautiful vase. It is amazing how you transform these chunks of wood into wonderful pieces tfs
Thanks so much 😊
Mike, I was wondering if you have a problem with dust getting between the headstock and bed ways after you move headstock. Apparently even a tiny amount can upset the lathe centre between tail and headstock.
This could have been what caused the little wobble in end of vase. Cleaning bedwaysbefore and after moving headstock helps. I’ve seen a RUclips tutorial on this, sorry can’t remember where or name of it but it I can be serious to proper headstock alignment.
That could have been it but not sure, I do keep the bed pretty clean but it can always happen. 😀
I have talked about brazing to other RUclipsrs and it seems to be something that nobody wants to mess with I like projects like this but it always bothers me just a little to see a break in something like that copper ring. Brazing is not that difficult much easier than welding but only a tad harder than using silver solder but they sell brazing rods that have flux caked on the outside of them and that makes it easier than it ever was before I have some and love it when I get to mess with them. What are your thoughts on brazing rods? You are not afraid of them are you? I do like the end result of this piece glad it turned out! Hyuk hyuk sorry my dad jokes are always horrible...
Hi Raif, it is something I have looked into but never tried. But now you have brought it out into the open I will actively look for a project to use it on. Thanks for the inspiration, all the best, Mike
Definitely not mahogany which is bit more red. For me you turned a piece of sapele, because your piece looks like some wood I bought to build a guitar but I must admit I never saw irocco before
Thanks for your input, the sapele I've turned before has always had an even colouring which is why I'm thinking iroko.
Beautifully simple design.
Thanks a lot Martin 😀
The black and copper worked well. Would the grain have responded to being burnt then the gold, or is it the wrong sort of wood for that?
I've never tried it on this type of wood, must give it a go 😁
Stunning!!!
Thank you!!
white mahogany
It's possible, I must get some to compare 😃
Is it Iroko, perhaps?
Hi Paul, yes that is my guess.
I have no idea awhat kind of wood, other than it's a stunner..
The gold wax works really well with the copper and black CA, and with the wood itself, you've got yourself a fine piece of art there!
Thanks Jaxx, I need to get your stuff sorted, should have time soon.
No rush Mike.. your rug isn't going anywhere in the mean time
@@jaxxlawson4545 cheers Jax
Really nice Mike the black ca certainly complimented the copper strip
Cheers Colin, I enjoyed this one 😊
I'd have found that really frustrating, the curvature making it wider than wanted, but it looks like it worked great 👍
Yes it was but I'll practice and get better 😌
I'd go with the iroko myself. I've never worked with it, but it resembles what I've seen. Beautiful nonetheless.
I think the consensus of opinion now is towards Iroko, thanks so much for watching :)
Never mind your talent which is without doubt excellence at it's best your presentation makes it a great experience to watch thanks for sharing your talent with us 😀 ❤❤
Thanks so much Trevor 😀
The wood grain is very subtle but that embellishing wax really brought it out beautifully. The inlay just made it. Simple but beautiful. Can’t get any better than that. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much Lynda 😀
What a lustre on this. I don't recognize most of the woods you've named, but each piece you've created brings out the intricate beauty of the particular wood. A pleasure to watch.
Thanks Lisa 😀, so glad you enjoyed it. All the best, Mike
I don't know, but she sure is a beautiful, perfect piece of wood. Excellent form!
Thank you very much! I do like the shape of this one :)
Hi Mike, nice job. regarding sanding inside the vase. I turned a shaft that fits my drill and fattens out at the end. I then cut a slot into the grain and I use this to feed in a piece of sandpaper.
Ah, a bit like a flappy disc, thanks I had forgotten about those things :)
A very nice vase Mike. I'd love to try copper inlay but apparently it's no longer possible to get copper earth wire in the EU due to legislation, now it has to be braided.
Wow, that is unfortunate, I just bought this from eBay, lots for sale on there.
@@MikeHolton Thanks for that Mike, didn't think of Ebay, I'll take a look.
