    I will never understand how these people can claim to be "in the Word" and taking their faith seriously when Jesus literally said, "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others" and they're over here filming themselves praying for tens of thousands of people to watch.

      I think its due to their mentality or belief system being extremely performative. American Christianity as it is today is from the Protestant movement but even then its very disconnected from its own roots since the early Protestants were more ritualistic and traditionally private than the ones today in america since its all for show and profit. American Christianity though is too general, there are specific groups within not tied to these types of groups, like Orthodox Christians which do not behave this way and actually condemn or speak against it, since they believe it’s a lived faith rather than something you use to one up other people who dont belong to your belief system

    The way Ashley and Ally talk about Christianity and having trust in god reminds me a lot of how people talk about the Law of Attraction. Law of Attraction is all about trusting the process and wanting it but not wanting it too much because then you aren't trusting the process enough. Then if it doesn't work and you don't get what you want you're told you didn't do it right and not that the Law of Attraction just isn't real.

    This entire show just sounds like two American white women with very little adversity in their lives saying lines that they think show what good christians they are. At times a little bit of what they worry about peeks through, but most of it just comes off as saying what they want to be real rather than what their reality actually is. That's an impression I get from a lot of christian influencers, not just from this reality show, but here it's even more clear.

      Yeah it’s pretty severe cope more often than not (can attest as a pastors kid and former Christian myself). Part of saying it will all be ok “because God” is trying to convince yourself. There were moments you could tell they almost wanted to critique the structure (only God can give me a husband and I feel old yet he brought me to LA where it’s hard to date etc) but just cut themselves off with a shrug like “nothing we can do about it I guess.” I don’t miss that helplessness!

    What Ally said about how the world doesn't have "surrendering" and we all have anxiety is so ridiculous. I had so much anxiety around my faith, whether I was reading the Bible enough, praying enough, whether I was enjoying my hobbies and interests more than I enjoyed praying, whether God was going to do this or that for me or if I needed to give up on what I wanted because God's "calling" was different for me, etc. I actually feel more surrendered and at peace as an ex-Christian, believing there is no mechanism like prayer by which I can even attempt to exert control on my surroundings. I've accepted that bad things happen, that there are answers I will never receive, that I am not in control and there is nobody I can pray to who is. I'd say it's Christians who don't surrender because prayer is by its very nature an appeal to a higher being who controls things to ask it control those things in the way you would like it to. You may accept that the answer is no, but at the same time you're still expecting that someday you will have answers, someday things will work out for your good even if that's not right now. Christianity is by its very nature a refusal to believe that there may not be a happy ending. I mean, you can't tell me that coming to terms with the reality that there may not be a happy ending and that there may not be anybody out there looking out for you isn't "surrender." It absolutely is.
    EDIT: I wrote out this comment before Ashley's little add-on about trusting God to give them what they want and oh my god it doesn't sound virtuous and faithful, it sounds like ENTITLEMENT. They sound like spoiled brats who want to be pampered princesses without putting any work in. That's how they come off. I also want to point out that as a Bible college graduate in my late thirties, I've seen MANY young women ascribe to this "I'll wait for the Lord to deliver me a husband" and end up perennially single.

      It has destroyed my OCD I'm telling you. Even to this DAY, if something bad happens to me after not praying, I feel like it's MY fault for not praying in order to prevent that thing from happening to me (OCD thinking) even though nothing exactly good happened after praying or nothing bad happened to me during days where I didn't pray either, like life went on as normally and I had just got unlucky during that ONE specific day where I didn't pray.

    Thanks for showing this. It reminds me how Christianity can teach learned helplessness. I used to be in their boots. I hope the best for them.
    When I was a teen in Sunday School at this evangelical free church, they played a reality show that was produced like Survivor on an island. It gathered teens of all faiths, but its goal was to convince them of Christianity. It was several episodes... I wonder if y'all could find it? It's gotta be around 2007ish?

      sadly, it’s mainly because those two places became media hubs. even youtubers/influencers who don’t live in those two places have to go there occasionally for opportunities. they have usually the studios, company headquarters, and the manpower to do some of the things required for media collaboration. you technically can be an influencer without living there, but being there means less traveling for opportunities. it also means you may not be considered for jobs because of the fact you have to travel/fly out to get there. it’s all about business in media hubs, especially getting things done as fast as possible.

    Re: What's appealing about reality TV. Maybe it's just the crowds I tend to hang with, but my first thought was less "This isn't appealing because it isn't aspirational" and more "this isn't appealing because where's the drama/conflict/etc.?" Like, when I think reality TV, I think less about the Kardashians and more about Survivor, Love Is Blind, Family Swap (or whatever it was called), and so on, where the stars _are_ supposed to be regular people, but they're being pitted against each other and/or against their environment in some way. And even with the Kardashians, I always got the impression that at least half the appeal for a lot of folks was that there always seems to be at least two members of the family getting into _some_ sort of drama with each other. Now, that's also part of why I often feel a bit gross about watching reality TV, as well, but at the same time, that's what I've seen so many people (very much including myself) get sucked in by more so than just, "Ooh, rich people!" In fact, if a show was just rich people being rich, I would have absolutely zero interest, and it would be just as boring as non-rich people sitting around and being non-rich.

    I think the reason they’re so basic is that they’re trying to be normal outside the Evangelical stuff. “Look, we eat avocado toast and drink pumpkin spice lattes! We’re not in a cult! Is that something someone in a cult would do? I don’t think so!”
    After all, for them this is missionary work and convincing their young viewers that living like that is normal is a big part of that. The dullness is the mission.

    • @Colddirector
      @Colddirector 8 часов назад

      That makes sense actually. A lot of cults/MLMs/etc *crave* any form of legitimacy they can get. By being so banal, it’s saying something like “Hey don’t worry! We’re not wierd or controlling or anything!”.
      They only want to roll out the manipulation once you’re in.
